SPORT IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF LIFE
AT THE MARY ERSKINE SCHOOL
Many girls thrive on physical challenge, and we offer a wide range of team
and individual sports and outdoor activities to suit all abilities. Whether
they are a first-time football player or a hockey internationalist, girls can
gain greatly from sport - participating, persevering, and feeling good about
themselves. ‘Winning’ at sport takes many forms at MES - not just scorelines
and medals, but personal achievement and positive experiences that
contribute to an active and healthy life.
The school offers a breadth of activities, with the intention that each girl can
enjoy a sport whatever her skill level and appetite for competition. There
are many opportunities to represent MES at all age groups in team and
individual sports.
ENJOYMENT & PARTICIPATION FOR ALL
Through sport we aim to ensure that girls demonstrate
commitment, enthusiasm and are focused on
improvement. Girls learn to accept success and
failure, victory and defeat equally while taking pride in
representing their school. Above all, girls are encouraged
to enjoy what they do.
A DIVERSE PROGRAMME OF DANCE
Dance is a very popular part of school life. We have a number of dance clubs available to girls
of all ages and abilities. Girls have the opportunity to perform regularly through internal and
external competitions, displays and in our annual dance show, Kaleidoscope.
AN OPPORTUNITY TO FIND NEW INTERESTS
We offer over 30 extra-curricular clubs, from athletics to volleyball. Over 500 girls participate
in sports clubs which offer something for everyone – whether girls want to take their talents to
the international level or simply have fun with friends.
DEVELOPING INDIVIDUAL EXCELLENCE
Each year sees many remarkable sporting achievements at MES and we work hard to develop
individual talents and aspirations. We regularly have district and national representation at all
levels in a wide variety of sports. MES 1st XI were named joint Scottish Schools’ Cup Winners
for 2019/20, following an unbeaten hockey season. Former pupil Amy Costello was part of the
Great Britain hockey squad who travelled to the Toyko 2020 Olympics. Current pupil Katherine
Fraser represented Scotland Women in the 2019 Cricket World Cup qualifiers and more
recently in T20 matches against Ireland. In addition, former pupil Grace Molloy is representing
Great Britain in the World Orienteering Championships in Czechia in July 2021.
This legacy ensures that girls are aware of what can be achieved and gives them encouragement
to strive to fulfil their own personal goals.
