NURTURING AMBITION
The School has established a legacy of sporting achievement
from nurturing British Lions to Olympic canoeists, and we are
extremely proud of those pupils who have gone on to reach
these heights. Whether our pupils have aspirations to compete
internationally, or participate in sport purely for their own
enjoyment they take inspiration from those who have gone
before them.
A TRADITION OF SPORTING SUCCESS
AND ENJOYMENT FOR ALL
Throughout their sporting journey, pupils at SMC gain great pleasure and
confidence from playing sport at school. Every boy at SMC chooses a winter
and a summer sport in addition to participating in varied weekly PE classes.
Sport at the school contributes greatly to the development of our pupils,
helping them gain resilience, confidence and maturity, as well as essential life
skills such as teamwork, commitment and communication. Above all else,
we want to instil a love of sport and a passion for healthy living that will
continue throughout their adult life.
FIRST CLASS FACILITIES
Our programme is backed by excellent rugby and
football pitches, cricket squares, summer athletics
facilities and a state-of-the-art water-based hockey
astro, at our Inverleith sports ground. On the school
site we have a 25m swimming pool, a large wellequipped
sports hall, two further astro pitches and
a strength and conditioning suite. In addition to our
timetabled sports, we offer a wide range of optional
extra-curricular clubs after school or at weekends.
These include: rowing, table tennis, basketball, skiing,
triathlon, boxing, and mountain biking.
ALL ROUND DEVELOPMENT
As well as teaching the technical aspects of sport, we use games sessions to instil high
standards of sportsmanship and we strive to create an environment that supports and
challenges our pupils. Boys discover that sporting excellence takes many forms including
fair-play, dedication, teamwork, as well as respect for the opposition and officials. Our sporting
ethos emphasises enjoyment, commitment, humility, resilience and well-being, and we are
proud of the way in which the boys conduct themselves when participating in sport.
BEING PART OF A TEAM
Our large number of teams means that every child who wants to play a particular sport has
the opportunity to be part of a team and play in competitions, or to just enjoy sport with
friends.
A CULTURE OF EXCELLENCE
The ethos and disciplines we promote in the school help our pupils develop the character
and commitment necessary to become top-class sportsmen. We believe strongly in nurturing
our home-grown talent, and provide a high level of coaching across all of our programmes
which are delivered by specialist staff, many of whom are also involved in national coaching
roles. The School also offers an Elite Performers Programme to support our boys who are
competing at the top level of their individual or team sports.
