Whatever the reason, furries exist all around us, and chances are, you have aninterest in drawing them. We’re here to help! Throughout the book, we’ll walkyou through the steps of creating a menagerie of anthropomorphic animals, fromthe fuzzy to the fantastical. So, grab your art supplies and let’s draw furries!Some Words to KnowAnthropomorphic: A nonhuman thing displaying human characteristics.For example, an anthropomorphic animal is an animal with humancharacteristics. The term comes from the Greek word, anthropos (meaninghuman being), and morphe (meaning shape).Anthro: Shortened term for anthropomorphic animal.Furries: Another term for anthropomorphic animals. Refers to any type ofanthropomorphic animal, even those without fur. It can also be used todescribe people who are fans of furry characters.Scalies: Anthropomorphic reptiles and reptile-like creatures, includingamphibians, dinosaurs and dragons.Biped: Something that moves on two feet.Quadruped: Something that moves on four legs.Plantigrade: Walking on the sole of the foot.Digitigrade: Walking on toes.Unguligrade: Walking on hooves.
Furry HybridizationTo anthropomorphize means to attribute human characteristics to nonhumanthings. An anthropomorphic animal, therefore, is the resulting hybrid of ananimal mixed with human qualities. The degree of anthropomorphism is up toyou, the artist, to decide. As you create your own anthropomorphic characters,ask yourself if you want more animal or human elements showing through inyour characters.Think of a scale, with a human on one side and an animal on the other. As youslide across a scale, the character becomes either more human or animal-like.Consider, for example, combining a human with a lynx. On one side of the scale,you have the lynx, the other side, a human. In between, there’s everycombination possible. You might choose to represent most of the lynx’s features,like its muzzle, ears, tail, fur and paws, on a human body.Or you could simply express the lynx’s ears. Or, you could go the other wayand depict a lynx with human expressiveness and intelligence. Both are validapproaches that blend the two basic elements of human and animal together tocreate distinct furry characters.
