Some films make history. Others
predict it. You don’t have to be a fan
of horror films to appreciate the
enduring influence of The Cabinet of
Dr. Caligari. It is dark and it is deep.
Delightfully macabre. Indeed, the
innovative mise-en-scène of this early
silent movie saw the fairer sex
fainting in the aisles when it was first
released in 1919. Today though,
Robert Wiene’s classic is also seen as
a prophetic metaphor for the acts of
the far right in the first half of the
20th century – but don’t drop your
popcorn, let’s start with the plot.
