<strong>and</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terests are essential to <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g topics <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>terests with professional <strong>and</strong> technical writ<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Case Western Reserve University, a private research university located<br />

<strong>in</strong> Clevel<strong>and</strong>, Ohio, was formed <strong>in</strong> 1967 by the federation of Case Institute of<br />

Technology (founded <strong>in</strong> 1880 by philanthropist Leonard Case Jr.) <strong>and</strong> Western<br />

Reserve University (founded <strong>in</strong> 1826 <strong>in</strong> the area that was once the Connecticut<br />

Western Reserve). Ohio’s largest <strong>in</strong>dependent research university, Case is most<br />

highly regarded for its medical school, ranked by US News at fifteen <strong>and</strong> twenty,<br />

respectively, <strong>in</strong> primary care <strong>and</strong> research, <strong>and</strong> for its eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g school, particularly<br />

the biomedical department, which consistently ranks <strong>in</strong> the top five<br />

among the nation’s undergraduate biomedical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g programs. For these<br />

reasons, Case receives the twelfth largest amount of federal research fund<strong>in</strong>g<br />

among private universities <strong>and</strong> spends nearly a million dollars a day on research.<br />

Given the campus culture <strong>and</strong> environment, the Case English Department<br />

wisely made h<strong>and</strong>s-on research the central concern when design<strong>in</strong>g<br />

English 398N: <strong>Professional</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Technical</strong> Communication for Eng<strong>in</strong>eers. This<br />

advanced writ<strong>in</strong>g course is structured around students identify<strong>in</strong>g, propos<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

research<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> present<strong>in</strong>g an eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g feasibility study spann<strong>in</strong>g the entire<br />

semester. Research on the subject matter for the project needs to beg<strong>in</strong> immediately.<br />

Students work <strong>in</strong> groups of their choice, preferably of three or four, <strong>and</strong><br />

beg<strong>in</strong> by complet<strong>in</strong>g a project outl<strong>in</strong>e form. The form helps break down the<br />

problem, the purpose <strong>and</strong> the audience for their proposed projects. Student<br />

conferences are recommended to assist groups <strong>in</strong> adjust<strong>in</strong>g the proper scope of<br />

the project as well as address<strong>in</strong>g issues of schedul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> time management.<br />

Flexibility <strong>and</strong> choice are central to English 398N. As mentioned, the<br />

growth of core requirements for eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g majors has imp<strong>in</strong>ged on students’<br />

ability to explore other <strong>in</strong>terests. That is why our department <strong>in</strong>vites students<br />

to use this PTW course as a chance to <strong>in</strong>vestigate a facet of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g that is<br />

either not offered by their school or offered as an elective for which they may not<br />

have time. Flexibility is also encouraged regard<strong>in</strong>g the makeup of the student<br />

groups. While some <strong>in</strong> the school of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g may argue for corrall<strong>in</strong>g students<br />

<strong>in</strong>to groups comprised of like majors, personal <strong>in</strong>dustry experience reveals<br />

that practic<strong>in</strong>g eng<strong>in</strong>eers spend a large portion of their time collaborat<strong>in</strong>g with<br />
