Shrewsbury School

Six-a-Side Football Festival

Headmaster’s

Welcome

Leo Winkley

Headmaster

As a life-long (and currently suffering)

Arsenal fan, and more recently a follower

of Shrewsbury Town FC, I appreciate

that football inspires passionate and loyal

support, as well as moments of delirious

joy, frustration and disappointment. We

very much hope that today will prove

to be a celebration of all that is good

about ‘the beautiful game’ and that all

our youngsters will enjoy playing on our

wonderfully maintained pitches.

Shrewsbury School has a long and

distinguished footballing history dating back

to the very origins of the sport. Indeed,

the oldest copy of the Laws of the Game

in the world currently sits in our Moser

Library and Salopians were instrumental in

the mid-nineteenth century. Before the

professional era, many Salopians achieved

full international representation and the Old

Salopian footballers have won the Arthur

Dunn Cup on many occasions, including the

today is about enjoyment as much as it is

about competition.

If you are interested in exploring the

education, you can take the next step

on 01743 280 552 or email

admissions@shrewsbury.org.uk. In the

meantime, I hope that you and your children

have a fantastic day of footballing fun.

Andrew Pembleton

Director of Sport

I extend a very warm welcome to visiting

staff, parents and most importantly

today’s players. Our sports festivals form

an essential part of our sporting programme,

and we are thrilled to be able to provide

an opportunity to develop relationships

through these experiences.

Shrewsbury School continues to go from

strength to strength, embracing change

whilst building on our strong historical

foundations.

We are justifiably proud with our sporting ethos

to provide excellence at all levels of participation,

whether this is training to win national titles,

having fun with your friends or simply leading

a healthy lifetsyle.

Whatever your level – today presents a

great opportunity!

I know that you will have a great day, and

should you wish to follow up with a future

visit, please do get in touch. In terms of

today, I look forward to seeing the talent

on show. So, relax, enjoy, work hard and

show us your skills!

Shrewsbury

School Football

Shrewsbury School is synonymous with

football, so it is especially pleasing to

welcome you to the site today for our

annual six-a-side Football Festival. Indeed

the football we see around the world today

is in no small part due to two Old Salopians

(JC Thring & H de Winton) who called a

meeting in 1848, when at Cambridge, with

representatives of other public schools

who, between them, came up with the

first set of laws of the game. The oldest

surviving copy of these laws is housed in

our Moser Library.

We are proud of this footballing heritage

and Salopian football continues to thrive

today. Steve Wilderspin is our Director of

Football and we are in good hands. Steve

has been involved with national teams at

ESFA and ISFA, is a current member of the

ISFA Executive Board, and has led teams

to national titles. Steve heads up a talented

team of coaches, many of whom are UEFA

B licence qualified and above.

We are fortunate to be able to enjoy some

of the best surfaces on the independent

school circuit, or indeed any circuit. Today

the tournament will have use of Top

Common, which includes our 1st XI pitch.

A huge thanks to our Grounds Team who

have prepared the site for today’s event.

Rules of the Tournament

1. Pitches:

Pitches will measure approximately 60-70

yards in length and 40-45 yards in width.

Goals will be 7 yards x 7 feet. A penalty

arc, radius 10 yards, will be drawn around

the goal. Penalty kicks will be taken from a

distance of 10 yards.

2. Size of ball:

A Size 4 football will be provided for all

matches by the organisers.

3. Laws of the game:

There will be no offside. Goalkeepers may

not punt or drop-kick the ball; they may

throw or roll the ball or, once they have

released it into play, kick the ball. At all

restarts (e.g. free-kicks) opposing players

must retreat 5 yards from the ball. Goalkicks

will be taken from inside the penalty

arc. With these exceptions, the normal

Laws of the Game will apply.

4. Eligibility of players:

The Senior tournament is for any boy/girls

in the school. The Under-11 tournament

is strictly for boys/girls born on or after

1st September 2010. In each tournament,

schools may bring a squad of up to eight

players, from which their team for each

match must be picked.

5. Substitutes:

Rolling substitutions can be made at any

time, with the permission of the referee,

when the ball is out of play.

6. Linesmen:

Each team should provide one boy or girl,

not playing in the match, who should

report to the referee before kick-off and

act as linesman.

7. Colours:

In the event of a clash of colours, the firstnamed

team will be required to change

their shirts. There will be a supply of

bibs available.

8. Tournament organisation:

First Round matches will be played on

a league basis in 4 groups of 4 teams.

Positions will be determined by the

following in order of preference:

1. by the team gaining the most points

(3 points for a win; 1 for a draw)

2. by goal difference.

3. by the team scoring the most goals;

4. by the team conceding least goals;

5. by the result of the match between

two teams;

6. by the taking of penalties on a sudden

death basis.

9. Drawn matches:

In the event of a draw in the quarter-finals,

semi-finals or in the final, the game will be

decided by taking penalties on a sudden

death basis until there is a winner.

8

10. Trophy ownership:

All trophies presented to winning

teams shall remain the property of

Shrewsbury School. The school winning

each trophy shall be responsible for the

safe keeping of the trophy while under

the care and custody of that school and

shall be responsible for returning it to

Shrewsbury School before the following

year’s tournament.
