Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence 

So Tim (Joyce of TNT) books this private 

party in West Deptford a while back and 

I’m like, “Sure, just send some details.” 

On Thursday we hit the road. Along 

the way I ascertain some details. It’s a 

wedding rehearsal dinner. Okay. It’s at a restaurant, 

not a residence. All right. The restaurant 

happens to be at Riverwinds, the swankiest 

two square miles in New Jersey. At this I looked 

down at my sneakers, Old Navy trousers and 

black T-shirt and thought, “Huh, this information 

would have been helpful TWO HOURS 

AGO.” Fortunately, I brought along a black button-down, 

so I only looked like the third poorest 

person there and a good time was had by all. 

But, if you ever book a gig with Tim Joyce, get 

all your information up front. Getting details 

from him is like getting details from the Cold 

War Kremlin. 

Oh, and the drive to this gig was a nightmare. 

Google took us Parkway-Expressway- 

Route 42 through the worst Philly congestion 

then LOOPED US BACK INTO THAT 

CONGESTION before sending us down 76, or 

possibly 295, because Google said one thing 

and the street signs said another. Determined 

not to go back that way, we took 322-55-47, 

where I witnessed a first for me; a small truck 

convoy stopping every 500 feet or so to retrieve 

a bunch of those CONSTRUCTION 1000 FEET 

AHEAD signs. It would have been impressive if 

it wasn’t midnight and adding 30 minutes to our 

commute and I’d already been up for 18 hours. 

On the plus side, while listening to Echoes on 

WXPN, I heard the sublime “Riding the Waves” 

by Immersion. 

We got fed at this gig, a rarity, and I had the 

pork chop with mashed potatoes (only two bites 

because I’m really-super-ultra serious about 

my diet starting NOW!) and asparagus. I took a 

whizz later and wondered what smelled so bad 

then I remembered I had asparagus. 

I’m truly and genuinely glad that Emir 

Santos is doing so well (look up his GoFundMe 

and kick in a few bucks please), but I’m really 

getting pretty sick of seeing him every time I 

turn around (Rusty Nail, Acme, Exit Zero). 

What’s Up Tish Roussos of the Week: What’s 

up, Tish? (This bit is remarkable only because 

my phone autocorrected Tish to Tush and a 

whole new world has opened before me…) 

Former Favorite Person in the World of the 

Week: Casey Bonner, EZFS server. She was my 

favorite until she failed to give me her regular, 

exuberant greeting on Friday. Now she’s, like, 

just the worst. 

Son of a Bitch of the Week: So I’m singing 

a song on Tuesday night (probably beautifully, 

as I do), with my eyes closed, focused 

on delivering the best performance possible 

because I’m the best singer in the world, when

Hiring all positions, 

someone sneaks up behind me and 

whispers, “Excuse me.” I just about 

had a heart attack! I turn to yell at 

this person only to see the impish 

grin of well-known son-of-abitch 

Tommy Caruso. Well played, 

Tommy, well played. 

This was one of three times I 

almost died last week. The second 

occurred when I walked out my 

back door to mow the lawn and 

into a giant web with the biggest 

spider I’ve ever seen a half-inch 

from my eyeball. I did a ninja dance 

and saw the drooling bastard scuttle 

up into the door jamb. I gently 

relocated it. With a shovel. The 

third was in the home of WCFA 

host Annie Walsh. Tim and I had 

just finished recording a song for 

a show she’s putting together, and 

as I went down the hall to use the 

restroom I somehow missed a 

step. Thankfully, I was able to pull 

a Baryshnikov (though probably 

not as graceful) and land without 

damaging anything. However, if 

someone had seen me, I would 

have died. 

Speaking of heart attacks… 

Correction of the Week: EZ restaurant 

manager Katie Dowe DIDN’T 

“think she’d be more upset” when 

she thought I was keeling over last 

Friday, In fact, she “didn’t realize 

she’d be so upset” at the thought 

of me keeling over. That’s, like, a 

whole ’nother thing. And really 

sweet. Undertow regrets the error. 

Because I’m the bigger man, 

I chose not to exact revenge on 

Tommy Caruso when it presented 

itself on Thursday. He was pedaling 

towards me on his bike by 

Duckie’s Market, I was heading 

north in my Highlander... 

Did famed artist Victor Grasso 

get fat?!!?!??! I was dropping off 

magazines at Harpoons on the Bay, 

saw him out with his dog and I 

could swear he got a little chunky. 

(This is one of very few things I can 

make fun of people about, having 

years of experience as a fat person 

myself.) Honestly, nothing could 

make me happier. He’s an insanely 

talented painter, got a hot wife and 

adoring children, the beard of a 

man half his age, so a little pudge 

only evens the playing field a bit 

for us normies. And he didn’t really 

look fat. He looked thick. Or, as 

the kids say, thicc. Which will only 

make him more attractive to most 

people and isn’t that just GREAT! 

Cool Part of Making Movies: 

Rubbing elbows with the Adam 

Sandlers of the world and maybe 

being visible for 1-3 seconds in 

a big time movie. Lame Part of 

Making Movies: Putting 400 miles 

on your car, working an 18-hour 

day then cashing a $141.82 paycheck.

Behind the Scenes Larry 

Crinkle of the Week: My new Davis 

Honda commercials were filmed 

in… central New Jersey somewhere 

(I honestly can’t remember). 

It was a long drive from Cape May 

and I, uh, needed the facilities but 

didn’t want to fog anyone out (it 

was a number two). So I made sure 

everyone was eating from craft services 

or otherwise engaged when 

I snuck away. A few minutes later 

(and a pound-and-a-half lighter) 

I step out of the stall as who walks 

in? Seth Joyner. This is my life, 

people. 

Lastly this week, I often feel 

like I don’t have a lot of friends 

in Cape May due to time, distance 

and whatnot (whatnot = me 

being a jerk), but everyone’s very 

kind responses to my “overnight” 

success have proven me happily 

wrong. It is my hope that these 

Larry Crinkle commercials are a 

stepping-stone to bigger and better 

things, like, maybe a Domino’s 

or AT&T kind of thing. But even if 

it’s not, they were a great deal of fun 

to make, I got paid a few bucks to 

do it and everyone was really nice 

to me for a day. So thank you. Larry 

Crinkle means love!

How do you capture the presence 

of a literary and activist icon like 

Dorothy Parker? Ask Suzanne 

Dawson! She embodies the historic 

character in “Dorothy Parker: 

A Certain Woman” at East Lynne Theater 

Company. From the start of the evening, 

you’re in for a rapid-fire bio and stories that 

pop on stage. As she tells the stories, Dawson 

masterfully switches characters as she positions 

herself all over the stage. Dorothy Parker 

was a consummate storyteller — and so is 

Dawson. She takes the stories and makes you 

feel them in first person. 

Parker was a founding member of the significant 

cultural trust of the Algonquin Round 

Table. After that, she was a very successful 

screenwriter, penning A Star Is Born (1937) for 

which she received an Oscar nomination. She 

co-wrote with her husband, Allen Campbell, 

but was paid more than him. Good for her! 

She became an activist and early on supported 

alleged murderers Nicola Sacco and 

Bartolomeo Vanzetti. Her activism led to the 

creation of a thousand pages on her with the 

FBI. She was quoted as saying (paraphrasing), 

“I can’t run my own life, how am I going to take 

over the country?” Dawson helps you imagine 

FBI agents interviewing Parker. I would have 

loved to be a fly on the wall. 

She lived through the 1960s and admired 

MLK. She left her estate to him, even though 

they never met. Talk about putting your 

money where your mouth is. When he was 

assassinated, the funds went to the NAACP. 

They have the rights to her work now. During 

WWII, Alexander Woollcott published a “portable 

library” series, and hers was the fourth 

to get to troops. Remarkably, it’s still in print! 

Your evening with Parker and Dawson 

includes three delightful stories enacted by 

one personality. We miss live theater! It’s 

wonderful to enjoy it with other theater lovers. 

Suzanne is effervescent — she loves her subject 

matter. Gayle Stahlhuth has done a beautiful 

job directing the larger-than-life Dawson 

and Parker. 

Parker seemed most active in the 1920s 

to the 1940s, but she was active through the 

1960s. Active in civil rights and in the unions, 

Parker was most vocal when the world considered 

women second-class citizens. Parker 

and Dawson are first-class all the way.

Bird Droppings 

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Perhaps you’ve heard about the 30 

billion bird hit to North America’s 

breeding bird population. Over the 

course of the last 50 years, we have 

lost nearly one third of our breeding 

birds. The good news is that in Cape 

May, you can still catch a glimpse of what 

our great wealth of birds looks like at full 

strength. Owing to the funnel-like properties 

of the Cape May peninsula, southbound 

migrants become concentrated as they funnel 

toward the tip. You still need a cold front to 

precipitate a good migratory push but the 

morning after a cold front and under northwest 

winds, the woodlots of Cape May are 

alive with migrating warblers. Cape May is 

an important steppingstone on the pan hemispheric 

highway. Most of the warblers, vireos 

and flycatchers passing through are first-year 

birds, journeying south for the first time and 

without adult supervision. It takes them longer 

to secure the food they need — largely 

insect caterpillars. Because of the volume of 

migrants here, Cape May is an especially critical 

refueling site for migrants. 

Since the pioneering days of Alexander 

Wilson, the “Father of American Ornithology,” 

Cape May has been famous for its fall concentrations 

of birds and thousands of bird 

watchers travel here head to the hawk watch 

platform. It’s a great spot to find migrating 

songbirds. It’s out of the wind and catches 

direct sunlight, the perfect combination 

for insect-eating birds like warblers. The 

short-needled cedar is attractive to Cape 

May Warbler, which despite the name is not 

common here. The type specimen was collected 

by ornithologist George Ordin a red 

maple swamp in northern Cape May County 

and presented to his friend Alexander Wilson 

who named it after where it was collected, 

which led to names like Kentucky Warbler 

and Mississippi Kite. But the pretty little 

tiger-striped Cape May Warbler does migrate 

through Cape May in September and early 

October. 

There are over 30 warbler possibilities 

so go out and be wowed while supplies last. 

Another local hotspot is the wet woodlands 

adjacent to the Northwood Center, 701 East 

Lake Drive, Cape May Point. You can sit in the 

blind and watch tree-top species come down 

to the water course for a drink. You may find 

yourself seated next to local birding luminaries 

like Scott Whittle, coauthor of the Warbler 

Guide. If Scott is not there, you’ll be sure to 

meet other local birders including CMBO’s 

stellar cast of associate naturalists.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, learn about Dorothy Parker at East Lynne Theater Company! 

Author Dorothy Parker defied categorization. 

Queen Victoria died when 

the author was seven, yet Parker’s 

work feels modern. Her books of 

poetry topped bestseller lists, she 

was a lifelong activist, and was nominated for 

two Academy Awards for screenwriting, yet 

she was most famous for her lunch clique — 

“The Algonquin Round Table.” At the Round 

Table, Parker collaborated and sparred with 

other talented writers. Her pithy insults are 

memorable, but she aimed for more than 

puns, saying, “Wit has truth in it; wisecracking 

is simply calisthenics with words.” 

Timeless and evocative of her own time, 

Parker’s work is evergreen. For example, read 

her 1928 poem “Fair Weather” as allowing 

the narrator to grieve one tumultuous love 

affair while hoping for the next, and it’s easy 

to picture her modern counterpart wiping 

away a tear as she swipes right. A 21st century 

Hazel, from the award-winning 1929 story 

“Big Blonde,” could enjoy a career in reality 

television. Parker’s screenwriting stamp on 

1937’s A Star is Born is evident in the 2018 version 

in which love is no match for addiction. 

Parker’s use of humor is comforting in 

times of trouble, whether in 1921 or 2021. This 

may be the reason “The Portable Dorothy 

Parker,” part of a series of books for GIs, was 

so popular among World War Two soldiers 

overseas. Parker’s anti-fascist views were well 

known — her condemnation of Hitler as early 

as 1936 had cost her work. Her husband Alan 

Campbell complained that her Hollywood 

speeches couldn’t hurt Adolf Hitler but could 

hurt Dorothy Parker. Parker stripped the 

sugarcoating off life as a soldier’s wife, using 

the experience of two husbands and two world 

wars. Her 1944 “Vogue” article asserted that 

men were changed by fighting, and cautioned, 

“The truth is that women’s work begins when 

war ends, begins on the day their men come 

home to them. For who is that man, who will 

come back to you?” 

The East Lynne Theater Company brings 

this author to life with “Dorothy Parker: A 

Certain Woman,” playing through October 16 

at Cape May Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes 

Street. This world premier show, researched 

by James Rana, is performed by Suzanne 

Dawson and directed by Gayle Stahlhuth. It

at our home but don’t know how to politely 

request that only people who are vaccinated 

attend. It seems equally impolite on our part to 

demand proof of vaccination to a home soiree. 

We have struggled with this since deciding to 

have it. We are reconsidering even doing it, but 

our three children are looking forward to it. Is 

there no solution to this? — Wary 

Dear Wary 

It seems the easiest solution is to request 

that those accepting the invitation please 

be vaccinated and to have the affair outside. 

Even if the weather is a bit cool, you can have 

heaters and a tent. A sit-down dinner might 

be more problematic, so you could consider

venue like the Filling Station. They are quite 

adept at working around these logistics, have 

wonderful food and a full bar. You must know 

by now, if only via the grapevine, who may 

not be vaccinated so be careful — small and 

intimate is not a bad thing.

I think my son-in-law of five years is 

cheating on our daughter. Several people have 

seen him in compromising situations around 

town. We even ran into him with a woman 

in the car whom he claimed he was giving 

a ride home. We have never liked him. He 

hasn’t held a job for over a year. Our daughter 

is a physician’s assistant and makes a good 

income, which she is always spending on him. 

If we broach the subject our daughter will 

accuse us of “looking for trouble.” But isn’t it 

our responsibility to protect her? Do we turn a 

blind eye? What would you do? — Concerned 

Dear Concerned 

Your daughter is still your daughter, 

but she is not a child. She’s already on the 

defense and if you are proven right, she may be 

resentful. The better move is to be there for her 

when this all hits the fan — which it will. If he 

is being this indiscreet, he either doesn’t care 

or is planning an escape route. Your daughter 

may even be turning a blind eye to these 

machinations. Keep still but keep vigilant. 

Do all you can to keep those bonds strong. 

Why not invite your daughter to dinner at the 

Sunset Grill and watch the sunset together?

shelter when his owners could no longer keep 

him. Once he is comfortable, he loves socializing 

and attention. Tennis balls are Aries' 

favorite toys and loves to play fetch. His leash 

skills are improving and he already responds 

well to "sit." Aries would be best in an adult 

home as the only pet in the house. 

COOPER is an energetic boy who loves to 

splash around in the pool. He has excellent 

leash skills and is a people-pleaser. Cooper 

lived with children previously, but needs to 

be the only pet in his new home. He is cratetrained 

which will help with his transition. He 

is also up to date on all vaccinations, neutered 

and housetrained. 

HODOR would be a great companion to anyone 

with large breed experience. He is a handsome 

young boy who has been working hard at 

his leash skills. Hodor can be a bit nervous in 

new situations but is learning to play with his 

toys. He is housetrained, neutered and up to

with threats of abandonment from older family

a peaceful and loving owner to come to his

of kittens. They are inseparable friends and
