An Oral History on CD
In the year 2000, at the age of 75, U.S. Marine Raider, Ralph
Shaeffer, was interviewed and compiled a wonderful oral history
about his life as a young man before WWII began and during the
war.
His story talks about Marine Boot Camp in San Diego, California,
and advanced training at Camp Elliott in Southern California near
Santa Barbara. As time went by, replacement battalions were being
organized for overseas deployment to New Caledonia.
The 30-day voyage across the Pacific is a compelling story. When
the ship arrived in New Caledonia, the 3 rd Raider Battalion was
asking for volunteers and he joined. After two additional months of specialized training, he was sent
into combat at Bougainville Island in the Solomons.
