staff and students to continue Einstein’s legacy of care.
“On September 28th, the Hospital was placarded, prohibiting visitors from entering the
wards and semi-private rooms. Since the 31st of August, 157 cases have been treated
in the Hospital department. The number of deaths was 25, a percentage of 15.9.”
~ Edwin Jarecki, MD, October 1918, The Jewish Hospital
Dear Friend,
Over one hundred years ago, a young physician at Einstein’s historic predecessor penned the words below the two
photos on page 2. When we began the year, they felt like a distant piece of our history; today they feel closer than ever.
The past few months have brought many painful realities forward and into the spotlight. Still, the resilience, ingenuity,
and generosity you and so many others have shown are a source of profound comfort.
The COVID-19 crisis has elevated the conversations surrounding inequity and the social determinants of health to
a national level. Long before this crisis, people like you have empowered Einstein’s work to address these systemic
challenges in our community through innovative solutions. Programs like Centering Parenting, which provides health
and well-being education to first-time parents, and Fresh for All, which ensures our neighborhoods have access to
healthy foods, help to decrease inequality and move towards a healthier life for as many people as we can reach.
As the Coronavirus descended on the greater Philadelphia area, people and businesses from all across our community
stepped forward to support Einstein’s health care heroes. Generous gifts, critically needed equipment, heartwarming
donations of food, and comfort items supported our staff as they cared for some of the most vulnerable members
of our society.
While so much has changed for medicine over the last century, Einstein’s commitment to our communities remains
steadfast. We are honored and grateful to have you as a partner in our work to build stronger and healthier communities
throughout the greater Philadelphia area.
Sincerely,
Carol Parlin Prushan | Vice President and Chief Development Officer
The Raymond Family
When Einstein Trustee, Eric Raymond, received an Einstein COVID-19
crisis response update in late March, it became a topic of dinner
conversation with his children, Jack (18) and Samantha (20). They were
particularly interested in the information about home-away-from-home
overnight accommodations being offered to help protect the health,
safety, and welfare of health care staff working long hours and also
concerned about protecting their families. Looking at the hotel room
rates being offered, the Raymonds felt they could help out by making
calls to negotiate more reasonable prices. Then, when an opportunity
to partner with La Salle University to use vacant dorm rooms emerged,
the Raymonds made a generous gift to ensure staff could be located close by and isolate without incurring
personal costs.
For the Raymonds, this was just the beginning. When Einstein launched its COVID-19 Employee Relief
Fund, the family made a second gift, which served as a matching challenge. Einstein’s community stepped
forward and joined the Raymonds, raising $454,084.76 to provide hardship grants to employees in need.
Thanks to the Raymond Family, Einstein’s health care heroes were able to continue to care for our
communities without the added pressure of COVID-19 related financial concerns.
DLL Group:
Financial Solutions Partner
When Kara Szymanski’s aunt passed away from COVID-19, she and
her family experienced not only the loss of a beloved family member,
but they lost the opportunity to be by her side in her last moments.
Kara, an Apple Financial Services representative with DLL Group,
decided no other family should experience such heartache. “I’ll always
remember my family standing a few stories below her nursing home
window to show support and pray with her. One day, she took a turn
for the worse, and a nurse used her iPhone to FaceTime our family so
that we could say goodbye. At that moment, I knew this technology would make a difference for patients
and families across our community.”
Patients’ faces light up upon seeing and hearing their loved ones on the iPads. At a time when in-person
patient visits are restricted, hospitals across the globe are using iPads to facilitate virtual family visits.
Seeking to keep patients connected in their time of need, Kara organized a fundraiser to secure and donate
iPads to hospitals. When her employer, DLL, learned of her efforts, they quickly mobilized and supplied
the iPads. With DLL’s backing, Kara and her colleague Tiffany Shelton were able to deliver 80 iPads to
Einstein Medical Center Montgomery. DLL and Kara have made a new level of communication possible for
many patients at Einstein Montgomery.
Drs. Chitra and Ved Gupta
Drawn to Philadelphia in 1971 at the prospect of completing his fellowship
under world-renowned Rheumatologist, George Ehrlich, MD, Ved Gupta, MD,
found a home at MossRehab and Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia.
He, his wife, Chitra Gupta, MD, and their children made Philadelphia their
home and the husband and wife duo proceeded to dedicate their lives to
the service of others.
Ved had a long and distinguished career with Einstein and MossRehab.
He rose to the role of Associate Chief in the Department of Rheumatology
and later served as the President of the Medical Staff of Moss Rehabilitation
Hospital. When he retired, he wanted to stay connected to the network and
the communities he worked with for so many years. When an opportunity to fully reengage and support the
education of future health care providers became available, the Gupta Family jumped at the chance. Einstein’s
Discover Healthcare Program, an outreach initiative dedicated to providing forums for high school students in
Einstein’s community to explore careers in healthcare, was a perfect fit.
The chance to give back and support the education of others appealed to the Guptas, as they are so grateful
to all those who believed in them during their early years of medical training. “When we achieved success,
we knew we wanted to show others we believe in them, we want to help lift them up,” shared Ved.
This year, in the face of a pandemic impacting the health and wellness of communities and former colleagues,
Drs. Gupta again wanted to help. Together, they stepped forward and made a generous gift to Einstein’s
donor-funded COVID-19 Employee Relief Fund, to ensure those they worked with over the years could be
relieved of some personal burdens and focus on the important work of saving lives.
