The SWFL Business Alliance is happy
to announce that our inaugural luncheon
was a resounding success! The
original intent of the get-together was
for local businesses to re-acquaint
themselves and support one another
while working together to address and
solve issues that we face as a community.
Inititally, our association’s co-founders
Katrina Salokar, Jesse Nadell, and I
reached out to a select number of high
quality people we wanted to attend, and
planned this to be an invitation-only
event. We had conversations about the
how’s and why’s of this decision, and
our answers were well-received, but we
also experienced an unexpected phenomenon.
However, once we widened
our perspective a bit, it made perfectly
logical sense.
In our talks, we kept hearing that
“outside” companies wanted to attend.
Why would that be? These outside
companies were all smart, successful,
well-financed, and make it a priority to
be fully aware of all new development
opportunities. So, they heard about the
event and wanted to be seen and heard
at the luncheon. Isn’t it delightful that
our tiny neck of the woods is on the radar
of these powerful companies?
Historically, Lehigh Acres would only
hear about a new development or construction
from the media, after the ink’s
been dry for a long time. They never had
a shot to bid on that growth, and we, as
a community, could never provide input
into how these developments were
crafted. These outside companies are in
a prime position to appreciate the tremendous
scale of the changes headed
Lehigh’s way and can help us gain more
representation in the decision-making
of this growth.
This first meeting put the days of being
out of the loop in the past.
This luncheon opened up a channel
of purposeful engagement so our local
businesses can interact with the outside
businesses. It was so much fun to see
everyone at the meeting furiously (in a
good way, of course!) making all sorts of
new friends and new alliances.
Because we had such a stellar group
of people in the same room, we have effectively
granted Lehigh Acres a seat at a
table that we never had access to before.
Your community business leaders took
a stand, and did right by Lehigh Acres.
You would have been proud!
As an example, Walter Salazar Pest
Control had a great conversation with
Jonathan Graham of Horus Construction,
who is the president of a massive
construction firm based in Tampa.
These types of conversations are what
we’ve been missing and would not have
October 2021 | EAST LEE COUNTY NEWS
SWFL Business Alliance Hosted Successful Inaugural
Luncheon By Butch Swank
been possible if we hadn’t all taken the
time to get together.
Now that the word is out, the amount
of interest continues to grow. We will be
diligent adding new members that meet
our criteria. If we do this, in time, our
growing body of extraordinary business
leaders will have a profoundly positive
impact in our community and beyond.
Being in that room with fifty exceptional
people was only a dream a few
short months ago. It’s truly amazing
what can be accomplished by some very
motivated and like-minded individuals.
Lehigh Acres is such a great place and is
only getting better.
change the future of Lehigh Acres, visit
Physicians’ Primary Care Of Southwest Florida Earns National
Recognition For Patient-Centered Care Submitted By Susan Bennett
Photo: Dr. Mary
Yankaskas, Physicians’
Primary Care
of Southwest Florida
The National
Committee for
Quality Assurance
(NCQA) has announced
that Physicians’ Primary Care
of Southwest Florida has once again received
NCQA Patient-Centered Medical
Home (PCMH) Recognition for using
evidence-based, patient-centered processes
that focus on highly coordinated
care and long‐term, participative relationships.
Physicians’ Primary Care of Southwest
Florida has been recognized as
a Patient-Centered Medical Home
continuously since 2013. The NCQA
Patient-Centered Medical Home is a
model of primary care that combines
teamwork and information technology
to improve care, improve patients’
experience of care and reduce costs.
Medical homes foster ongoing partnerships
between patients and their personal
clinicians, instead of approaching
care as the sum of episodic office
visits. Each patient’s care is overseen
by clinician-led care teams that coordinate
treatment across the health care
system. Research shows that medical
homes can lead to higher quality and
lower costs, and can improve patient
and provider reported experiences of
care.
“NCQA Patient-Centered Medical
Home Recognition raises the bar in defining
high-quality care by emphasizing
access, health information technology
and coordinated care focused on
patients,” said NCQA President Margaret
E. O’Kane. “Recognition shows that
Physicians’ Primary Care of Southwest
Florida has the tools, systems and resources
to provide its patients with the
right care, at the right time.”
“Our goal is to provide patient-centric
care to our patients. Attaining certification
as a patient-centered medical
home is a natural extension of this. We
operate our practice to provide each
patient access to their physicians, medical
records, preventative care and routine
health maintenance,” said Dr. Mary
Yankaskas, managing physician of
Physicians’ Primary Care of Southwest
Florida. “We have empowered all of
the members of our team to advocate
for our patients to improve their health
and provide a better, more caring environment.”
To earn recognition, Physicians’
Primary Care of Southwest Florida
demonstrated the ability to meet the
program’s key elements, embodying
characteristics of the medical home.
NCQA standards aligned with the joint
principles of the Patient-Centered Medical
Home established with the American
College of Physicians, the American
Academy of Family Physicians, the
American Academy of Pediatrics and
the American Osteopathic Association.
ABOUT PHYSICIANS’
PRIMARY CARE OF
SOUTHWEST FLORIDA
Physicians’ Primary Care of Southwest
Florida, a physician-owned and
operated medical practice, is celebrating
its 25th anniversary of caring for
Southwest Florida families. The practice
was formed in 1996 by many local
physicians and has grown to become
the largest physician-owned primary
care practice in Southwest Florida.
Medical specialties include internal
medicine, family practice and pediatrics.
Offices are conveniently located in
Lehigh Acres, Fort Myers and Cape Coral.
dedicated to improving health
care quality. NCQA accredits and certifies
a wide range of health care organizations.
practices in key areas of performance.
NCQA’s Healthcare Effectiveness Data
and Information Set (HEDIS®) is the
most widely used performance measurement
tool in health care. NCQA’s
Web site (ncqa.org) contains information
to help consumers, employers and
others make more informed health
care choices.
Fun with Pet Zodiac Signs
Chances are, you probably know your
own zodiac sign, but do you know your
pet’s zodiac sign? Using charted astrology
signs can provide insights into what
makes your pet tick and knowing more
about your pet’s personality can help you
better care for them.
Pets fall under one of 12 zodiac signs.
The sign that your pet was born under
impacts the way he/she interacts with the
world. Each sign also has its own set of
characteristics. Here’s a brief breakdown
of each zodiac sign and what it can tell you
about your pet’s personality.
Once you know your pet’s zodiac sign,
you can use that information to better care
for, train or simply understand your pet.
Just remember: Nothing is written in stone
or absolute. Your pet’s birth chart is a map
of the heavens at the time of their birth.
How they navigate it is up to them and you.
Publix Super Market Charities Donates Towards 53 Foot
Trailer For Midwest Food Bank Florida By Midwest Food Bank
Midwest Food Bank of Florida – a volunteer-driven,
faith-based organization
dedicated to alleviating hunger, malnutrition
and providing disaster relief locally
receives generous contribution towards
essential fleet trailer from Publix
Super Market Charities.
In 2020, the Midwest Food Bank Florida
truck drove over 170,000 miles, rescuing
over $52 million worth of food,
which fed 2.4 million hungry people
in Florida. In a weekly route, this truck
rescues over 200,000 pounds of food,
transporting it back to their Lee County
and Polk County warehouses. An essential
component to this fleet and the success
of the Midwest Food Bank Florida
food relief rescue, and distribution is
the 53-foot trailer. Carrying an average
of 40,000 lbs. of food supplies per
trip, this equipment ensures people of
SWFL do not go hungry.
“Without our essential fleet so much
food in the United States would go to
waste, and so many local Southwest
Florida people would go hungry,” says
Kelly Apfel, Marketing and Development
Manager of MFB Florida. “In the
behavior. Need we say more?
County Commissioners Cut Taxes, Lower Debt & Improve
Roadways By Commissioner Brian Hamman
Photo: Brian Hamman
Lee County Commissioner,
District 4
Throughout the
past several months
we’ve all been
warned about higher
inflation and now
because of the failed economic policies
at the national level, we’re seeing
it first hand with higher prices
at the gas pumps and grocery stores.
Fortunately, here at home your
Board of County Commissioners
has remained steadfast in building
a budget that provides financial stability
while making sure our hardworking
citizens keep more of their
own money.
When commissioners began
Rising In The East: A Message
From Sheriff Marceno
By Sheriff Carmine Marceno
Photo: Sheriff Carmine
Marceno, Lee County
Sheriff
At times, I believe
that people forget that
driving a motor vehicle
is a privilege…not
a right granted by the
Constitution.
As a privilege granted to those who
demonstrate the skills and abilities
necessary to operate a multi-ton piece
of machinery, this privilege comes with
a significant amount of responsibility.
Drivers are required to be licensed,
insured and unimpaired when driving.
Additionally, drivers involved in vehicular
collisions are mandated to remain at
the scene.
Statewide, there were over 105,000
reported hit-and-run incidents in 2019.
Between 2015 and 2020, 1,298 of these
hit-and-run incidents resulted in death.
This is unacceptable.
Of late, in the Lee County Sheriff’s
Office East District, we have been averaging
one reported hit-and-run each
and every day. A significant number
of these incidents have occurred on
stretches of Lee Boulevard and Homestead
Road.
Accidents happen. Stay at the scene.
Leaving the scene with property
damage can result in 60 days in jail and
a $500 fine. If injuries are involved, a
Christmas is just around the corner!!
The Salvation Army needs your
help. We will begin our Red Kettle
bell ringing the day after Thanksgiving.
We are ready to hire bell ringers.
If you or someone you know is interested
in making a few dollars while
also helping the people of your community,
come be a part of our team.
working on the budget for next year,
we focused on three core areas; keeping
taxes low, maintaining the level
of service our residents expect from
us, and moving forward on building
much-needed infrastructure,. The
county not only accomplished each
of those goals but did it without borrowing
money.
The countywide general fund budget
pays for core services regardless
of whether you live inside a city or
not. It provides for things like the
sheriff’s office, ambulance service
and all the local constitutional offices.
In September, Lee County will
adopt the roll-back property tax rate
– a bureaucratic way of saying that
we will cut our tax rate to account
for increases in property values. The
second or third degree felony has been
committed and the driver faces up to
five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
Should you leave the scene of an accident
that resulted in a fatality, you have
committed a first degree felony. You
are subject to a mandatory minimum
sentence of four years in prison, a maximum
30-year sentence and a $10,000
fine.
While some believe that they can
simply leave the scene and remain unidentified,
the abundance of surveillance
cameras and the plenitude of cell
phone cameras have helped identify
hit-and-run drivers.
I take these crimes seriously and
have directed resources to address this
matter. Lee County Sheriff’s Office vehicles,
both marked and unmarked, will
be focusing on hit-and-run incidents, as
well as impaired and reckless driving.
We’re out there and we’re watching.
Once again…stay at the scene. The
consequences of leaving are overwhelming
and devastating. Should you
witness a hit-and-run incident, please
immediately contact the Lee County
Sheriff’s Office.
On Thursday, October 28th at 10:00
am, we will have a hiring event. You
will need to have a government issued
picture ID, your Social Security
card and a piece of mail verifying
your address. Mask will be required
to enter building. Please do not bring
goal is to collect the same amount
from you as we did last year.
Recently the U.S. Census provided
the population numbers from their
2020 count, and it confirmed what
we see every day on our roads - Lee
County is growing. To make sure we
have the necessary infrastructure to
deal with this growth, commissioners
have planned to invest $250 Million
over the next five years on road
projects. These projects include the
Littleton Road widening from Corbett
to US 41, Big Carlos Pass Bridge
replacement and the widening of
Corkscrew Road.
Another project I’m extremely excited
about is the adding of shade
structures at all of our parks and
• Children’s Dentistry
• Dentures
• Partials
• Cosmetic Procedures
playgrounds over the next three
years. As we all know, these facilities
can get extremely hot for our
kids during the summer months and
these amenities will go a long way
towards keeping families safe while
they enjoy our world-class parks and
playgrounds.
Our citizens have faced adversity
before, the Great Recession, the BP
Oil Spill, Hurricane Irma, blue-green
algae & red tide, and now COVID-19.
Each time, our county has continued
to grow its economy and remain a
destination of choice for businesses
and visitors. I am confident that we
will do so again, and I promise that
the steady leadership you have come
to expect from your local elected officials
will continue.
Mad Hatter Day is a great day to be silly and celebrate silliness. The Mad
Hatter is a fictional cartoon character depicted in Alice’s Adventures in
Wonderland. The Mad Hatter is always acting silly. On Mad Hatter Day, it
is only fair and fitting to act a little silly yourself. So, grab yourself a top
hat, and have a a very silly Mad Hatter’s Day!
October 17 National Pasta Day
On National Pasta Day choose your favorite pasta shape, there’s over
600 of them, add your favorite sauce, and chow down! For many of us,
the first sauce that comes to mind is red tomato spaghetti sauce. To
celebrate this special day, it doesn’t matter what sauce you use. All that is
important, is that you use pasta noodles.
October 25 International Artist Day
Artists of all kinds are celebrating around the world today, as it is
International Artist Day. On this day, we can and should honor and
recognize all of the artists who enrich our lives and society in so many
ways. It is important to recognize the contributions of artists around the
world.
October 27 Black Cat Day
Black cats are considered a symbol of the Halloween holiday. Therefore,
it is only fitting the we celebrate Black Cat Day today. Said to bring bad
luck, but that isn’t the truth. Black cats are sweet and loving like any
other cat. So today, hug your black cats and let them know you love them.
October 29 Frankenstein Friday
Frankenstein Friday celebrates the birth of Frankenstein and its creator.
Frankenstein is one of the best known horror characters, dating back to
the 1800’s. We can’t imagine the Halloween season without the presence
of Frankenstein, lurking somewhere in the darkness.
