Gashi [gA.shi]

Learn Hausa

A noun for the English word hair. Also called “Suma”.

Suma [su.mA] is used more when referring to a female’s hair.

It is popularly used in some areas more than others.

As with most Hausa words, it can be used In conjunction

with a pronoun:

“Gashin kanka yana cika” : your hair is full

“Gashin kanki yana da kyau” : your hair is pretty

Because gashi can be found on various parts of the body, it

would need a qualifier when referring to the body part:

Gashin kanka/kanki :

Gashin baki :

Gashin Jiki :

Gashin Kirji :

Gashin Ido :

hair on your head (male/female)

moustache

body hair

chest hair

eye lashes

Gashi ko Suma

As with other Hausa nouns, gashi can be used with appropriate pronouns:

Gashinka/Gashinki : Your hair (male/female)

Gashinku :

Your hair (plural)

Gashinta :

Her hair

Gashinsa :

His hair

A Cikin Littafi Mai Tsarki : In the Scriptures

The bible in Hausa has a few example of the use of the word

‘gashi’. Here are a few examples:

Luka 21:18 : “Amma ba ko daya daga cikin gashin kanku…”

Farawa 25:25 : “dukan jikinsa kamar riga mai gashi”

Matiyu 10:30 : “ko gashin kanku ma an kirga su”

A cikin maganganun yau da kullun : In daily expressions

Tana da gashi da yawa : she has plenty hair

Gashinki yana da kyau : your hair is beautiful

Ina da dogon gashi : I have long hair

Dan’uwan mai sanko : The bald brother

Dan’uwan mai kwaliyanmolo : The brother with a shaved/cut hair

Na yanke gashin kaina jiya : I cut my hair yesterday

Dan’uwan da ba shi da gashi a kai: The brother with no hair on his head

with hair but with their peculiar names

(without gashi in the name)
