BUILDING CENTRE 1931-2021 The future of architecture and the building industry is likely to be dominated by the urgent quest for sustainability and the emergence of AI (Artificial Intelligence). However, the two might combine to solve many of our problems. 36
What’s next? Because it is proving hard to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and the use of construction materials with a high carbon footprint, we still have a wasteful attitude to recycling and the repurposing of buildings. However, we know we have to make drastic changes in order to save our planet. History tells us that innovation will hopefully help to solve many of these issues with the development of new materials and building construction techniques.The use of concrete and steel will probably be replaced in the long term by low carbon options and traditional construction methods by a dramatic increase in pre fabrication techniques. We will also see onsite 3D printed large scale components assisted by Artificial Intelligence. Whilst it is too early to say how AI will influence design and construction methods, it is likely to be radical, with a drastic reduction in components to increase speed and efficiency. Another factor is people’s increasing desire for proximity to nature and this will mean the inclusion of more terraces, gardens and greening which will encourage bio diversity. Traditional materials such as timber and masonry will retain a place in our sustainable world, but developments in architecture and construction will cause us to enter a new and exciting era for the benefit of all.
