Artist Statement
This necklace is part of a larger body of
work entitled Bush Enlightenment Baroque
which are my impressions on Australian
flora and fauna through the eyes of a
migrant from Latin America.
This necklace contains silver cast
specimens of native Australian flora
similar to those collected Joseph Banks
during Captain James Cook’s voyage in
the 18th century and thus their connection
to the age of Enlightenment.
Native Flora necklace was made for
Society North America Goldsmiths
(SNAG), 50 year anniversary Goldsmith
‘20. This work is inspired by a necklace
made by the late Alma Eikerman for
the exhibition Goldsmith ’70 held at the
Minnesota Museum of Art in 1970.
