At Sporting Marvels we are always pushing our team

to invest in themselves around their commitments. As

you’ll have read throughout this brochure, our 2-Year

Training Programme actually demands this on both

the education and sporting fronts by making certain

qualifications mandatory for internal progression.

As well as their DBS, First Aid & Level 2 Safeguarding

Children & Young People, Interns must complete the

Level 3 Teaching & Learning and a UKCC Level 1 Sports

Coaching before they can be considered for promotion

to Trainee. Once at this tier, individuals must complete

the Level 4 Education & Training and a UKCC Level 2

Sports Coaching before they can be considered for

Senior Marvel status. However, our pushing doesn’t

stop when the 2-Year Training Programme ends, as

several individuals have also acquired degrees during

their time as a Marvel, whilst others have instead

pursued other qualifications aimed at boosting their

long-term career prospects and earning potential.

Specifically on the degree front, Sporting Marvels

can create bespoke financial arrangements and timetables

around Marvels pursuing further education,

whilst also supporting UCAS & Student Finance Wales

applications where needed. Of course, part-time and

full-time further education each have their own advantages

and disadvantages unique to individual circumstances/wants

such as living away or living at home,

all of which should be weighed up by interested individuals.

But there is no doubt that the financial benefits

are the main advantage of a part-time degree over

a full-time course. In the case of Sporting Marvels at

least, not only are you able to add “income floors” to

yourself via Level 3 & Level 4 qualifications (see examples,

left) and earn whilst you do this so as not to incur

“living debt”, but tuition fees for part-time degrees

are significantly cheaper than for full-time courses (at

least £27,000 for most undergraduate degrees). The

“income floors” qualifications can even better equip

an individual to earn money around a future full-time degree via agency work if required or if time spent with

Sporting Marvels is only for a few years. Also, for Welsh students studying in Wales or at the Open University,

the means-tested grant based on household income is still available in the

same way as it is for full-time students.

Average Student Debt UK - £40,000

Average Student Debt Welsh Student Studying in Wales - £25,000

For part-time degrees, there are far more options relating to student financing

as you’ll see on the following page. For example, a student working in Sporting Marvels with a higher end

household income between £45,001 - £50,000 would be entitled to a non-repayable grant of £1,173 per year.

This amount alone, without further tuition/living loans, would cover the full tuition cost of an Open University

degree assuming living costs were covered through their day to day role with us. This would essentially mean

the student achieving a degree with no debt.

More info on the financials for students who meet the basic eligibility criteria, as well as a selection

of degrees that work well around Sporting Marvels, can be found on the following pages...

tuition fees loan:

Part-time students at a university or college in Wales, or at the Open University, can get a Tuition Fees Loan

of up to £2,625 per year, depending on the cost of the course. The Tuition Fees Loan is paid in 3 instalments.

Payments are made directly to their university or college after Student Finance Wales receive confirmation that

the student is attending. Students are charged interest on their Tuition Fee Loan from the first day the money is

paid to their university or college until the loan is repaid in full or cancelled.

Students must be studying at a course intensity of at least 25% to get a Tuition Fee Loan. For a student doing

their degree over 6 years, taking 60 credits per year, course intensity = 50% (a full-time student would undertake

120 credits per year).

living support:

Part-time students can apply for a Welsh Government Learning Grant to help with their living costs (which

doesn’t have to be paid back) and also for a Maintenance Loan on similar terms to a Tuition Fees Loan. Of

course, if a student wished, they could use the grant to pay their tuition fees if their living costs were covered

by other means.
