Parishes also undertake variousfundraising activities, events, and apply totrusts for grants to support parish projectsor capital building projects. The diversity ofcultures and traditions within the parishesof the Archdiocese also drive a variety ofapproaches and responses to fundraising.The fundraising team support parisheswith their fundraising in several ways.Primarily this takes place through plannedgiving and stewardship drives, whichseek to encourage parishioners to sharetheir financial and personal gifts. We alsoprovide parish legacy leaflets, makingit easy for parishioners to rememberthe Church in their Will. Every so oftenparishes need funds for projects andrepairs, so our team provides Trustfundraising support, in order that parishescan apply for grants that require capital.In 2020 the fundraising team shifted theirfocus to helping parishes set up onlinegiving and contactless donation devices,to enable them to respond to the new andchanging ways in which parishioners give.At diocesan level, there are ministriesand services, including statutoryresponsibilities, which are supportedthrough the contributions made by theparishes through their levies. Otherministries, such as the training of priestsand the care of retired and sick clergy,are also supported through fundraisingefforts, including appeals to parishionersvia direct mail or announcements at Massaccompanied by Gift Aid envelopes.Great care is taken to administer legacy giftsreceived by the charity, to ensure executorsand family are treated compassionately,professionally and with dignity and care. Afew years ago, the Archdiocese undertookfundraising for the Clergy SupportCampaign, with thousands of individualscommitted to regular donations over 4 years.The fundraising team continue to steward thesesupporters, providing them with regular updatesand information on how they might continuetheir support, should they wish to do so.The Trustees have systems in place tomonitor and respond to due diligence issuessurrounding gifts received by the charity.The Trustees also have systems in placeto monitor and respond to any complaintsreceived. We are pleased to say that in 2020,the Archdiocese of Southwark receivedno complaints about fundraising and nocomplaints were received by the FundraisingRegulator about the Charity.Fundraising is an integral part of supporting thelife and mission of the Church, but it is a meansto an end, and that is in building up God’sKingdom through service to God’s people. In the Archdiocese we have beenblessed to welcome several men answeringthe call to serve; choosing to dedicate theirlives to Christ and to the Church.In 2020 Southwark welcomed 5 new priests and 3deacons, all of whom have been supported through upto six years of formation by the Diocese.Ecclesiastical education costs £30k per candidate perannum and we are grateful for each donation to thePriests’ Training Fund. The Fund means that thosewho aspire to bring God’s love and healing to thisworld through ordination can receive instruction overa period of 5-6 years.
