World’s Best Tour Operators
Multi-Year Winner
Letter FROM OUR Founder
Wherever you live, I think we can agree the last two years have shaken us—out of routine,
away from any sense of ‘normal’, and into personal reflection. At times, it felt difficult to see
how travel was relevant while staying home to protect our families, friends, and communities.
But in 2021, we were reminded that traveling is much more than checking a country off a bucket list.
It is a microcosm of everything we missed most: face-to-face exchanges, a shared sense of humanity,
and eye-opening experiences that broaden our worldview. As much as we loved watching Stanley
Tucci explore Italy, screens were a stark reminder that it is impossible to vicariously replicate the
sensory overload of adventure. Gazing at unfamiliar landscapes returns us to a childlike state of
wonder. Tasting an unfamiliar cuisine encourages us to be adaptable. Summiting a mountain pass
reminds us of our strength and resiliency.
Thanks to our guests’ patience and flexibility, home team monitoring ever-changing travel regulations,
and global partners sending regular updates, Boundless Journeys is well-versed in traveling responsibly
in the new normal. From the Okavango Delta to the Dolomites to Machu Picchu, travelers in 2021
reported that with itineraries already designed to go off-the-beaten-path and fewer crowds, they often
had these iconic landscapes to themselves.
Our desire to live fully is greater than ever. Whether you dream of a wildlife safari, epic mountain
trek, or bespoke European adventure, we’re ready. You can expect cultural immersion, jaw-dropping
scenery, small groups of vaccinated like-minded travelers, and guides who open doors to the local
culture. We can’t wait to travel with you in 2022!
WHO
WE ARE
We are one of the best adventure travel
companies in the world, but don’t
take our word for it. In 2020, we were
named a Top Tour Operator in
Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards
for the third time. We are incredibly proud and
thankful that our hard work and expertise
continues to be recognized. In addition, many of
our tours have been named “Tours of a Lifetime”
by National Geographic Traveler magazine. But the
most powerful testament to how our guests feel
WHAT
WE DO
about their Boundless Journeys experience is that the
majority of our new guests are referred by our past guests.
More personally, we are a close-knit team of
adventurers. We enjoy exploring our backyard trails,
meeting farmers, and sampling local cheeses in
Vermont as much as we relish uncovering the best
kept secrets and tasting new foods in the beautiful
corners of the world. Our tour managers are
adventure travel experts, and they love nothing
more than planning the perfect trip.
CORE VALUES
1. BE THE BEST
From the moment you make the first call,
you’ll notice the Boundless Journeys
difference. There’s a reason we’ve ranked
among the top international tour operators
on Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best awards
multiple years, including in 2020.
2. BE ADVENTUROUS
Our unofficial motto is “a life without
adventure is one that’s not fully lived.”
We seek secluded trails, paddle unfrequented
waters, and lose ourselves (without really
getting lost). We infuse this same spirit into
every one of our journeys.
3. TRAVEL RESPONSIBLY
We strive to maintain a symbiotic
relationship with the destinations we
explore, ensuring our net impact is positive.
It’s important to us to help preserve the
places we visit and help them thrive.
We take care of every detail of your
adventure, so you don’t have to. Simply
choose a Boundless Journeys tour
and let us do the rest—from boutique,
independently-owned accommodations
that complement each day, to local culinary
experiences with the best flavors of each region, to
daily logistics—our travel gurus have you covered.
04 PLEASE CALL FOR DETAILED ITINERARIES 800.941.8010
Our tours are defined less by the sites you see and
more by the journey you experience. We embrace in
equal measure the scenic splendor and cultural diversity
of each destination. In practice, this means we explore
a landscape, not from the window of a crowded bus,
but in the fresh air with the earth under our feet.
And we delve deeper into new cultures through
interactions with artisans, farmers, bakers, tribesmen,
and shamans—encounters that often leave an indelible
mark on our soul.
4. EMBRACE AUTHENTICITY
We seek out unscripted moments and
look for ways to discover the world through
unexpected experiences you won’t find
anywhere else.
5. VALUE CONNECTIONS
Many of those authentic moments are
possible only through our trusted
connections with our marvelous guides
and local partners who know how to travel
the Boundless Journeys way.
Our scheduled, small-group departures are created by our staff to immerse you in the special highlights
of each destination far from the beaten path. Travel with like-minded, adventurous companions in a
team of local guides who are consummate
professionals. They are generous with their
knowledge, flexible and creative when
tweaking the itinerary to take advantage
of the weather or a local celebration, and simply a delight
to travel with. It’s an invaluable privilege to have a local’s
of a new destination and its culture. Our guides are our
trusted friends, and they will quickly become yours, too.
Each Boundless Journeys itinerary is like an
embroidered Bhutanese thangka—many
individual elements are intricately stitched
don’t offer “hiking-only” or “culture-only”
the landscape with opportunities to learn about
6 BOUNDLESS BENEFITS OF
ACTIVE TRAVEL
by Michelle Cournoyer, Destination Manager
Michelle is most at home in the mountains (no matter the continent), but the
French Alps captured her heart a long time ago. She would return to them again
the significance of the sacred mandala
Hiking to remote temples and
monasteries, including the iconic
landscapes with unique cultural encounters, this Special Departure
is for those who want to delve deeper into Bhutanese culture and
its inextricable relationship to Buddhism. This wellness experience
explores the soul of Bhutan not from within the walls of a hotel spa
but through learning from locals about traditional practices and
spiritual beliefs.
Take a regular vacation, add in some extra time in nature, remove the usual tourist spots, don’t forget
good walking shoes, and you’ve got an active travel experience that benefits your mind, body, and soul.
Being on foot means…
…you can visit places not accessible by vehicles, and thankfully, there are places that remain so—remote
monasteries, ancient glaciers, and untouched rainforests, to name a few. While it takes some additional time
and effort to get to them, they are more special because of it.
…you see landscapes others only see in magazines. When you’re hiking over Alpine passes or snorkeling among
pristine reefs, you’ll have 360-degrees of splendor all around you. Sure, pull out your camera, but the memories
will always be more vivid than a photograph can ever be. Each day brings another jaw-dropping vista.
…you meet more locals. Strolling through old-world villages or passing farmers, you’ll encounter real people.
You might not speak the same language, but there’s something new to learn with every interaction and
perhaps a few common phrases too. Being on foot means that it’s much easier to interact with people, from
artisans to shepherds. These moments are as authentic as you can get.
…you notice the details. There’s nothing like being in nature to make you appreciate the little things.
Perhaps a vibrant wildflower catches your eye or you stop to listen to birdsong. Maybe you’re captivated by
an unusual rock formation. The details you’ve seen up-close stay with you long after you’ve returned.
…you will have some pretty unique experiences. Hike on a historic pilgrimage route, share the ground with
incredible wildlife on a walking safari, trek to the base of a sacred mountain, or introduce yourself to the
llamas of Machu Picchu. You can’t do any of that sitting down!
…you can stay fit and healthy! We all know how important movement is for our physical and mental health.
Active travel can help keep you spry for many future adventures. The healthier you are, the longer you can
continue to travel. That’s our goal, and we bet it’s yours, too. We hope you will join us for your next adventure!
by Deborah Tobey, Destination Manager
After a decade out west adventuring as a river guide and ski instructor, Deborah
was drawn back east to be closer to family. She still heads to the backcountry to
find fresh powder.
We rarely talk about the sounds that we encounter when traveling and how they differ by or even define
a destination. Sounds give us a sense of place, whether that’s the hustle and bustle of a large city or the
seagulls calling out overhead. Soothing sounds have positive effects on our moods. If you close your eyes,
you may just be able to hear some of the moments described below.
WATER - The sound of water varies from massive,
thundering waterfalls like Victoria Falls that go deep into a
canyon to small streams that bubble down Norway’s steep
fjord slopes. There’s the gentle sound of a lake lapping at
its shore—vastly different from the crashing waves on the
rugged cliffs of Scotland, which is also a sharp contrast to
the soft pattering of water against a kayak in the tranquil
lagoons of Palau.
CRUNCH - One of my favorite things about Vermont’s
autumn is the sound of dried leaves crunching underfoot. It’s
a sure sign of the season, as is the crunch of snow. Crunching
on gravel with each step while walking the Camino de
Santiago signifies something different—a physical, historical,
and sometimes emotional journey. Meanwhile on safari, you
may hear a crunch of elephants eating tree bark and roots
just a few feet away from your vehicle.
HIGHLIGHTS
Savoring culinary experiences including
truffle hunting, and cheese, olive oil,
and wine tastings
Exploring Lake Bled’s storybook landscape,
with its cliff-top castle and iconic islet
Hiking amidst the peaks of Triglav
National Park and kayaking through the
Adriatic’s Pakleni Islands
WIND - Patagonia is famous for its almost incessant
wind that rustles the leaves and grasses, ebbing and
intensifying as gusts roll in and pass. In the Himalayas,
the sound of flapping prayer flags is ubiquitous.
And if you stop in the Costa Rican rainforest, you’ll hear
the creaking of limbs and trunks as trees sway in the
breezes up in the canopy.
FOOD - What sound does beer make? If you’re in an old
English pub, it makes a satisfying thump on the wooden
bar when the bartender serves up your pint. Sawing a loaf
of crusty, artisan bread for a trailside picnic can make your
mouth water. The sound of popping and decanting bottles
is familiar at wine tastings. And in Morocco, tea sounds
like a girgling stream as it’s poured from high above the
glass—the traditional way to serve it.
BELLS - In Bhutan and Nepal, the small bell that chimes
with each full rotation of large prayer wheels can be
meditative. When hiking in the Alps, you’re never far from
echoing bells. From giant cowbells and smaller ones for
sheep, to iconic steepled churches ringing out the hour,
the cacophonous chorus creates a unique and charming
auditory backdrop.
QUIET - And sometimes, you may notice a lack of sound,
as I have in Finland and Iceland shortly after a snowfall
(fluffy snow absorbs sound creating a dampening effect).
Or the soundscape may simply be quieter than what
you’re used to if you live in an urban area—all the more
reason to get out on the trail and give your ears a
sound break.
Southern Spain is a historic and cultural melting pot, evidenced in
its megalithic ruins, fortified Moorish towns, and converted medieval
mosques. Morocco offers an intoxicating mix of traditions, from vestiges
of French colonial rule to cobblestoned ancient medinas. Islamic,
Christian, Berber, French, Arab, and Roman histories collide as we explore
the landscapes, mystique, and cultural connections in these regions.
“ I FIND IT UTTERLY
WONDERFUL INTRODUCING
PEOPLE TO AND
SHARING THE DELIGHTS
AND PECULIARITIES OF
MY ADOPTED COUNTRY.
”
WHAT LED YOU TO GUIDING AND WHAT DO YOU ENJOY
MOST ABOUT IT?
When I first moved to Madrid in 1990, I joined a hiking club
to improve my Castilian, stay in shape, and make new friends.
Eventually, I volunteered to guide for the club. That’s how it all
started! I find it utterly wonderful introducing people to and
sharing the delights and peculiarities of my adopted country.
WHAT MAKES SPAIN SO SPECIAL?
There is something really special about the warmth and hospitality
of Spaniards and their capacity to enjoy life. That’s why I love living
here. Also the cuisine. My favorites include sea urchins, octopus,
grilled sardines, Palamos prawns, and a very rare Basque chuleton
(bone-in steak) accompanied with good wine or a dry Spanish cider.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING IN SPAIN TO SHOW TRAVELERS?
So many things! But primarily, the varied and fascinating history
of Spain, its diversity of languages and landscapes, and the
importance of gastronomic culture in the daily lives of Spaniards.
Emily Trostel, Spain Manager
Emily’s knowledge of food, wine, and literature is balanced by her affinity for
hot springs, camping, and bluegrass festivals. She loves swimming, hiking, and
boats that require paddling.
ENHANCING
SAFETY
FOR YOUR JOURNEY
Our number one priority is the safety of our guests
and guides, the local people you will encounter on
your adventure, and your community when you return
home. We are working with our worldwide partners and
guides to ensure that every trip has appropriate safety
precautions in place. While nothing can completely
eradicate every risk, below are some procedures you
can rely on when traveling with Boundless Journeys, in
addition to following all guidelines at each destination.
When practical, we will dine outside on patios and
terraces and enjoy trailside picnics, which may include
more individually packaged items, though we’ll strive
to keep these products local and fresh. Our guides will
continue to wash their hands or use hand sanitizer
before preparing lunches and wear gloves and masks
when handling food. Evening meals will continue to
offer a memorable end to the day with sensible options
for seating and dining with your own party.
HIGHLIGHTS
Exploring Georgia O’Keefe’s Ghost Ranch
retreat and the Ancestral Pueblo dwellings
at Bandelier National Monument
Hiking in high desert landscapes through
golden aspen groves, Ponderosa pines, unique
rock formations, and colorful canyons
Indulging in regional traditions with a
cooking class and visits to exclusive spas
and thermal baths
SANITIZING & HYGIENE
We have worked with our local teams to ensure they
are following the recommendations from health
authorities for cleaning surfaces and that the hotels
and restaurants we use are doing the same. Vehicles
are sanitized nightly and high-touch surfaces more
frequently during the tour. Our guides will remind
guests about hand washing and sanitizing and when
a face covering is recommended or required.
PHYSICAL DISTANCING
On the trail, we ask guests to be mindful of spacing,
not only from their fellow group members, but also
from others on the trail. During other activities or
in enclosed spaces, guides will inform you of local
policies. With an average group size of just 10 guests,
we are already in a good position to achieve
appropriate distancing while still enjoying being
together. You may also take over any of our scheduled
dates with your own group of travel companions.
Please call us at 1-800-941-8010 to find out more.
MEALS
As always, part of our restaurant selection criteria is
a high level of cleanliness and customer service.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION & PUBLIC SPACES
We use public transportation on a few tours and
occasionally visit small museums and other public
spaces. Local regulations will dictate the cleaning and
sanitation schedule. Please be prepared to wear a face
covering in proximity to others and at the request of
your guide.
TRAVELERS RESPONSIBILITY
As a trip participant, your responsibilities include
understanding and preparing for the conditions
described in the itinerary and following the health
and safety guidelines of Boundless Journeys, local
authorities, and the CDC. At their discretion, a guide
may ask a guest to leave the trip if further participation
may be detrimental to the individual or other guests.
We strongly urge any guest feeling ill shortly before
departure to cancel their trip. To help cover your
investment, we highly recommend purchasing travel
insurance with supplemental “Cancel for Any Reason”
coverage. Guests who feel unwell during the tour should
immediately inform the guide, who can take the
appropriate next steps. We appreciate your cooperation.
HOW WE
EXPLORE
RESPONSIBLY,
AND YOU CAN, TOO
WAYS
TO SAVE
Our goal is to create meaningful experiences that protect
the delicate ecosystems and attributes of every location we visit.
MAKING CONNECTIONS
Our local guides offer insider knowledge of their
country, including tips on etiquette and customs.
They facilitate meaningful and positive interactions
with the people we encounter, such as dinner at the
home of a local family. While you may arrive at
a destination as a visitor, you leave with a deeper
understanding and connection to each place.
GOING LOCAL
Boundless Journeys’ small group size stems from a
desire to provide a more intimate traveler experience.
We can take advantage of opportunities that are
simply not possible for larger groups. We support local
economies directly, forging strong relationships with
our partners and friends abroad as we return year
after year.
RESPECTING PEOPLE AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Our itineraries explore stunning natural landscapes
where conservation is of the utmost importance.
We practice Leave No Trace ethics and actively
contribute to the conservation of parks and protected
areas. We are happy to support organizations working
to protect ecosystems and improve the livelihoods
of local communities.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
• Bring a reusable water bottle
• Look for local crafts and artwork when
buying souvenirs
• Use public transportation when possible
• Give shareable, educational gifts if you’ll
be interacting with students
• Be respectful of local customs, though
they may differ from your own
OUR
ACTIVITY
LEVELS
1 – EASIEST
Our easiest trips are generally culture and nature
journeys that offer light activity. Optional walks and
hikes (approximately 2–4 hours) through gentle terrain
with little elevation gain or loss. Altitude is typically
not a factor on these tours. Other activities, such as
snorkeling or sea kayaking, are optional.
Example—our Africa safaris (page 31).
2 – EASY TO MODERATE
Walking, hiking (approximately 3–5 hours), kayaking,
or other activities on most days. Trails and paths are
through rolling countryside, with occasional steep trails
with up to 1,000' of elevation gain. Many of our walking
trips are in this category. Examples—Bhutan: Hidden
Kingdom in the Himalayas (page 27), Italy: Discovering
Puglia (page 44).
3 – MODERATE
Full day hikes (approximately 4–6 hours) on unpaved
trails and paths through hilly terrain with typical
elevation gains and losses of 1,000'–2,000'. There may
be occasional short steep sections of trail. Examples—
New Zealand: Alpine & Coastal Hiking (page 20),
Spain: Hiking the Camino de Santiago (page 46).
We want to make sure that you choose the adventure
that’s right for you from our many one-of-a-kind trips.
Each trip is rated on a scale of 1 to 5. A few of our
trips have a “+” added to the number, which indicates
something that falls in between. Our detailed itineraries
provide additional information on what to expect on
each trip (detailed itineraries are available by mail,
email, or on each trip webpage as a PDF download).
We encourage you to call one of our travel experts at
1-800-941-8010 with any questions or concerns that
you may have. We are always happy to assist you in
any way that we can.
4 – MODERATE TO STRENUOUS
Full day hikes (approximately 5–7 hours) through
mountainous terrain with significant elevation gains
and losses of 2,000'–3,000'. Terrain may be rugged with
uneven footpaths. The average altitude is generally no
more than 12,000'. Options are limited. These trips may
involve some simpler accommodations. Examples—The
Alps: Tour du Mont Blanc Hiking (page 50) and Nepal:
Everest Lodge-to-Lodge Trekking (page 24).
5 – STRENUOUS
Full day trekking (approximately 6–8 hours) through
rugged mountainous terrain with steep climbs and
descents and one or more of the following present:
elevation gains and losses of as much as 4,000', altitude
that exceeds 12,000', and rugged uneven footpaths.
These trips typically offer few options. Currently our
highest rated trip is 4+, Peru: Lodge-to-Lodge
Salkantay Trek (page 17).
