Wherever you live, I think we can agree the last two years have shaken us—out of routine, 

away from any sense of ‘normal’, and into personal reflection. At times, it felt difficult to see 

how travel was relevant while staying home to protect our families, friends, and communities. 

But in 2021, we were reminded that traveling is much more than checking a country off a bucket list. 

It is a microcosm of everything we missed most: face-to-face exchanges, a shared sense of humanity, 

and eye-opening experiences that broaden our worldview. As much as we loved watching Stanley 

Tucci explore Italy, screens were a stark reminder that it is impossible to vicariously replicate the 

sensory overload of adventure. Gazing at unfamiliar landscapes returns us to a childlike state of 

wonder. Tasting an unfamiliar cuisine encourages us to be adaptable. Summiting a mountain pass 

reminds us of our strength and resiliency. 

Thanks to our guests’ patience and flexibility, home team monitoring ever-changing travel regulations, 

and global partners sending regular updates, Boundless Journeys is well-versed in traveling responsibly 

in the new normal. From the Okavango Delta to the Dolomites to Machu Picchu, travelers in 2021

We are one of the best adventure travel

After a decade out west adventuring as a river guide and ski instructor, Deborah 

was drawn back east to be closer to family. She still heads to the backcountry to 

find fresh powder. 

We rarely talk about the sounds that we encounter when traveling and how they differ by or even define 

a destination. Sounds give us a sense of place, whether that’s the hustle and bustle of a large city or the 

seagulls calling out overhead. Soothing sounds have positive effects on our moods. If you close your eyes, 

you may just be able to hear some of the moments described below. 

WATER - The sound of water varies from massive, 

thundering waterfalls like Victoria Falls that go deep into a 

canyon to small streams that bubble down Norway’s steep 

fjord slopes. There’s the gentle sound of a lake lapping at 

its shore—vastly different from the crashing waves on the 

rugged cliffs of Scotland, which is also a sharp contrast to 

the soft pattering of water against a kayak in the tranquil 

lagoons of Palau. 

CRUNCH - One of my favorite things about Vermont’s 

autumn is the sound of dried leaves crunching underfoot. It’s 

a sure sign of the season, as is the crunch of snow. Crunching 

on gravel with each step while walking the Camino de 

Santiago signifies something different—a physical, historical, 

and sometimes emotional journey. Meanwhile on safari, you 

may hear a crunch of elephants eating tree bark and roots 

just a few feet away from your vehicle.

WIND - Patagonia is famous for its almost incessant 

wind that rustles the leaves and grasses, ebbing and 

intensifying as gusts roll in and pass. In the Himalayas, 

the sound of flapping prayer flags is ubiquitous. 

And if you stop in the Costa Rican rainforest, you’ll hear 

the creaking of limbs and trunks as trees sway in the 

breezes up in the canopy. 

FOOD - What sound does beer make? If you’re in an old 

English pub, it makes a satisfying thump on the wooden 

bar when the bartender serves up your pint. Sawing a loaf 

of crusty, artisan bread for a trailside picnic can make your 

mouth water. The sound of popping and decanting bottles 

is familiar at wine tastings. And in Morocco, tea sounds 

like a girgling stream as it’s poured from high above the 

glass—the traditional way to serve it. 

BELLS - In Bhutan and Nepal, the small bell that chimes 

with each full rotation of large prayer wheels can be 

meditative. When hiking in the Alps, you’re never far from 

echoing bells. From giant cowbells and smaller ones for 

sheep, to iconic steepled churches ringing out the hour, 

the cacophonous chorus creates a unique and charming 

auditory backdrop. 

QUIET - And sometimes, you may notice a lack of sound, 

as I have in Finland and Iceland shortly after a snowfall 

(fluffy snow absorbs sound creating a dampening effect). 

Or the soundscape may simply be quieter than what 

you’re used to if you live in an urban area—all the more 

reason to get out on the trail and give your ears a 

sound break.

journeys that offer light activity. Optional walks and 

hikes (approximately 2–4 hours) through gentle terrain 

with little elevation gain or loss. Altitude is typically 

not a factor on these tours. Other activities, such as 

snorkeling or sea kayaking, are optional.

2 – EASY TO MODERATE 

Walking, hiking (approximately 3–5 hours), kayaking, 

or other activities on most days. Trails and paths are 

through rolling countryside, with occasional steep trails 

with up to 1,000' of elevation gain. Many of our walking 

trips are in this category. Examples—Bhutan: Hidden 

Kingdom in the Himalayas (page 27), Italy: Discovering 

Puglia (page 44). 

3 – MODERATE 

Full day hikes (approximately 4–6 hours) on unpaved 

trails and paths through hilly terrain with typical 

elevation gains and losses of 1,000'–2,000'. There may 

be occasional short steep sections of trail. Examples— 

New Zealand: Alpine & Coastal Hiking (page 20), 

Spain: Hiking the Camino de Santiago (page 46).

more than 12,000'. Options are limited. These trips may 

involve some simpler accommodations. Examples—The

Everest Lodge-to-Lodge Trekking (page 24). 

5 – STRENUOUS 

Full day trekking (approximately 6–8 hours) through 

rugged mountainous terrain with steep climbs and 

descents and one or more of the following present: 

elevation gains and losses of as much as 4,000', altitude 

that exceeds 12,000', and rugged uneven footpaths.

increases in government taxes, fees, and levies beyond the control of Boundless Journeys. 

TRANSFERS 

You may transfer to another scheduled group trip that is 

within the same calendar year without penalty by notifying 

us of your wish to transfer 90 days or more prior to departure. 

After that time our normal cancellation fees apply. Transfer 

schedules for cruises, safaris, custom trips, and certain 

special events are often more strict. 

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS 

If you need to cancel your trip, you should call Boundless 

Journeys or your travel agent immediately, and then send 

notification in writing by email or mail. Certain fees will 

apply calculated as of the date Boundless Journeys receives 

written notice of cancellation. 

CANCELLATION FEE SCHEDULE* 

Scheduled Group Departures: 

• Minimum fee is $100 per person 

• 90 to 61 days before departure is 25% of the trip price 

• 60 to 46 days before departure is 50% of the trip price 

• 45–0 days prior to departure is 100% of the trip price 

Custom Tours: 

• >120 days before departure: Deposit is non-refundable 

• 120 to 91 days before departure: 25% of payments 

are non-refundable 

• 90 to 61 days before departure: 50% of payments 


• 60–0 days prior to departure: 100% of payments 


*Cancellation fees for cruises, safaris, custom trips, and certain special events are often more 

strict. These exceptions are clearly indicated in the detailed itineraries for each of these trips. 

Internal airfare and permits purchased on your behalf by Boundless Journeys are generally 

non-refundable. 

SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS 

Accommodations (hotels, tents, cruise cabins) are based on 

double occupancy. A single supplement is paid by participants 

who specifically request single accommodations, subject to 

availability. If you reserve at least 120 days prior to departure, 

you may be eligible for a reduced or free single supplement, 

if you are the first one or two solo travelers to reserve. Please 

note free or reduced single supplements are not combinable 

with other offers or promotions. If you wish to share 

accommodations, we will try to match you with a roommate 

of the same gender. If you reserve at least 120 days ahead and 

a roommate is not available, you will only be charged 50% 

of the standard single supplement (unless otherwise noted in 

the detailed itinerary). Single accommodations are limited 

so reserve early! 

CANCELLED TRIPS 

In the rare event that Boundless Journeys must cancel a tour, 

all trip members will be notified a minimum of 45 days before 

the trip departs and will receive a full refund of payments 

made to Boundless Journeys. Boundless Journeys reserves the 

right to cancel any tour for any reason, including insufficient 

tour enrollment. Boundless Journeys is not responsible for 

expenses incurred by guests in preparing for a cancelled tour, 

including, but not limited to, nonrefundable airline tickets, 

visa fees, inoculations, equipment, etc. We encourage you 

to contact our office prior to purchasing your airline tickets 

to check the status of your tour. 

TRIP CANCELLATION INSURANCE 

We strongly recommend purchasing Trip Cancellation 

and Interruption Insurance. This can help prevent needless 

loss in case of serious illness, accident, or death of the traveler, 

traveler’s immediate family, or traveling companion.
