ANTICO CAFFÈ GRECO

ROME, ITALY

Writing Retreats

Over 250 years old, this cosy café

has been popular with many writers

over its long history. Many notable

patrons include playwright Henrik Ibsen,

poets John Keats and Lord Byron, and

author Hans Christian Andersen, among

many other famous wordsmiths and artists.

The Antico Caffè Greco has played host to

so many literary geniuses over the centuries

that it has become an iconic creative hotspot

that remains a haven for writers and artists

to this day. When in Rome, grab a coffee

where some of literature’s greatest minds

once sat. Perhaps some greatness will find

its way into your book.

AMBOS MUNDOS HOTEL

HAVANA, CUBA

Page 116

In the 1930s, many writers stayed and wrote in the

Ambos Mundos Hotel, but none more famous

than American novelist and Nobel laureate Ernest

Hemingway. From 1932 to 1939, the historic hotel was

a regular residence of the author, a place he thought

was perfect for writing. Many of his works were started

here, including For Whom the Bell Tolls — one of his

most celebrated novels about the Spanish Civil War.

Room 511, Hemingway’s “first home” in Cuba, has been

preserved as a small museum that holds several of the

writer’s belongings and is curated to appear as he would

have left it. Start your day with a tour and let the spirit of

Hemingway imbue you with creativity. To relax after a

long day of writing, head to the Plaza de Armas restaurant

where you can eat the same dishes favoured by the

novelist. Alternatively, head up to the Roof Garden and

enjoy an exquisite barbeque whilst you take in the same

stunning views that inspired Hemingway.
