KELLETT SCHOOL

SIXTH FORM

A CUTTING-EDGE EDUCATION

At Kellett, our job is to enable our Sixth Form students to be thoroughly well-prepared for future

challenges and changes. We prioritise student wellbeing. In 2020, Kellett was honoured to win the

British International category at the Independent Schools of the Year awards. The award highlighted

the success of the School’s Positively Kellett wellbeing programme, which was adopted from Geelong

Grammar School’s Positive Education Model. We offer the highest levels of personalised care, with time

built into the timetable to allow for individual sessions with tutors, teachers and university advisors and

work experience opportunities.

We expect the future of work to look very different from today; our students are likely to have more than

one occupation and to carve out career paths that look very different to their parents.

Kellett’s Sixth Form experience has been carefully planned to ensure that we achieve our aim of

creating a love of learning and confidence for life. We prioritise student wellbeing and offer the highest

levels of personalised care, with time built into the timetable to allow for individual sessions with tutors,

teachers and university advisors.

OUTSTANDING ACADEMICS

We are one of the few schools in Hong Kong to offer the A-level qualification. By choosing A-levels,

students’ knowledge, understanding and skills are deepened thanks to the programme’s in-depth

subject content. Students normally study three subjects during their two years in the Sixth Form. There

are currently 22 subjects available to study:

English Literature Mathematics Further Mathematics

Computer Science Economics Physics

Chemistry Biology History

Geography Business Studies French

Politics (only available with

History)

Mandarin

Spanish

Art DT: Product Design Media Studies

Physical Education Music Drama

Psychology

By studying three A-level subjects, time is available for the rigorous academic programme to be

supplemented by a variety of different initiatives which ensure our students, as global citizens and future

leaders, receive the best possible education. These programmes include Global Citizenship, Mini MBA,

the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), Critical Perspectives and Positively Kellett.

Kellett’s Sixth Form is a real strength of the school,

and we are proud that our graduating Year 13 students

go on to achieve fantastic public examination results

as mature, globally-minded individuals with an

appreciation of other cultures, ideas and beliefs.

PUBLIC EXAMINATION

RESULTS

Year-on-year, Kellett School’s A-level students achieve public examination results that rival or better top

UK independent schools. Our results are a true reflection of the outstanding education that we provide,

and the fantastic teaching that inspires our students to achieve their own personal bests.

CLASS OF 2021 A-LEVEL RESULTS

Grades A* 55.4%

Grades A* - A 81.4%

Grades A* - B 93.3%

Grades A* - C 98.5%

In the Class of 2021, 10 students were awarded straight A* grades, with 99% of the cohort being

accepted into their first choice university.

GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP

Delivered to all students for a lesson each week by our dedicated pastoral team, Global Citizenship is

a core component of the curriculum.

In today’s fast-paced and evolving society, this spiral curriculum helps students to become informed,

critical, responsible and active citizens, who have the confidence and conviction to work collaboratively,

take action and try to make a difference in their communities and the wider world they live in.

Addressing topics such as philosophy, active citizenship, relationships and rights and responsibilities,

these lessons encourage our students to take an interest in topical and controversial issues and to

engage in discussion and debate.

Global Citizenship in the Sixth Form also provides an opportunity for students to research and explore

their future options; making plans and preparations for their life beyond school.

I really do think that Kellett’s emphasis on independent

learning has prepared me well for the realities of studies

at university and also life in general. We have had classes

to prepare us on how to manage budgets, how to cook

and how to do the laundry.

Completing the Mini MBA has helped me in

understanding how businesses operate and will provide

me with valuable skills going into the future. A personal

highlight was the Christmas lesson, looking at how

businesses seasonally market and source products.

MINI MBA

The Mini MBA provides Sixth Form students with a practical introduction to the world of business in

an engaging workshop environment. Through the year-long course, Year 12 students gain a deeper

understanding of how businesses function and develop ‘real world’ business skills to help them in their

future careers.

The course consists of five units:

• Personal Impact and Presence

• Introduction to Business

• Business Performance

• Marketing

• Strategy

Throughout the course, an ePortfolio will be used to assess each student’s progress and can be referred

to in their personal statement and CV for university entrance.

The Mini MBA helps bridge the divide between education and business by providing opportunities for

students to interact with the Hong Kong business community through talks, visits and work experience.

Students are encouraged to network through these links with parents, alumni and external partners, and

embrace these opportunities for learning and further experience.

EXTENDED PROJECT

QUALIFICATION (EPQ)

To give students the opportunity to focus on their passions, most of our Sixth Formers undertake the

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which is worth 50% of an A-Level in terms of UCAS points. The

EPQ is an in-depth piece of research which involves either writing a 5,000-word essay or producing

an artefact, performance or investigation, plus a 1,000 word report. Past student projects range from

curating an art exhibition, making a custom-made bass guitar, organising a charity golf tournament to

raise money for a local child protection drop-in centre and a dissertation discussing the ethical issues

surrounding terminally ill patients in the UK.

CRITICAL PERSPECTIVES

Critical Perspectives is a weekly lecture programme loosely based around the Liberal Arts. Students

engage with complex ideas that sit beyond our formal academic lessons, and are expected to make

research-based contributions during these seminars. Pre-reading is provided as a stimulus, and post

lecture discussions take place in tutor groups, to prepare students better for university style learning. A

wide range of speakers including staff, parents, students, and external speakers are involved. Kellett is

forging links with universities in Hong Kong and further afield, to provide experts such as philosophy

professors, contemporary art curators, and scientists, who will enhance our students’ cultural capital

and critical thinking skills. Topics include epistemology, historical and societal influences on musical

development, consciousness, invisible design, and the relevance of Confucianism in modern society.

LAMDA

LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) exams use performance to develop selfconfidence,

physical presence and a strong speaking voice. LAMDA exams cover a range of disciplines,

including acting, speaking verse and prose. The School has two dedicated LAMDA teachers who work

alongside the Drama department in order to challenge and stretch our talented students at Kellett.

LIFE IN SIXTH FORM

Our facilities include a state-of-the-art Sixth Form Centre, fully equipped kitchen and common room.

The Centre allows our oldest students to form a real community where they experience work and play

in a comfortable environment and convivial atmosphere.

A thriving House system forms an integral part of the daily life of each and every student at Kellett

Senior School. Kellett’s House system starts in Year 7, and mirrors that of traditional UK boarding

houses, providing students with a high-level of care, guidance and support. Every year a House

Captain is elected and the role is assumed by a Year 13 student.

As a break from academia, students are free to use the gym and indoor swimming pool during their

study lessons, before or after school. There are also a number of annual social events reserved just for

Sixth Form students, as well as a wide variety of extra-curricular activities (known as Period 8) which

reflect the school’s passion and success in sport and the creative arts. These include the Hong Kong

Award for Young People, Hong Kong’s equivalent of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Other activities

include rowing, sailing, life drawing, drama and the Model United Nations, to name a few.

ENCOURAGING

RESPONSIBILITY &

INDEPENDENCE

Kellett Sixth Form students are given greater responsibility, as well as more independence and

privileges. Engagement in a rigorous academic programme, supported by a dedicated leadership team

and exceptional specialised teachers, encourages students to develop independent study skills and

compelling academic and personal profiles in preparation for the next stage of their education.

Our aim is to future-proof our students with the right mind and skill set to enable them to thrive today

and tomorrow. Expectations are high and the school prides itself on offering a nurturing and supportive

environment with a great deal of individual mentoring available to every student.

Beyond the classroom, a mix of educational visits and work experience help our Sixth Form students

broaden their horizons, experience different cultures, and take a step closer to becoming global

citizens. Nearer to home, our students can participate in extra-curricular learning service in support of

NGOs in our local communities.

Sports and the arts play a big part in the lives of Kellett students in the Sixth Form, with numerous

music, drama and sporting opportunities, from the annual House Music competition to tightly fought

sports competitions held all over Asia.

When I joined Kellett in Year 8, I had just moved to a

completely different country, but in the end I felt at ease

and that I belonged to the community. I feel that Kellett has

prepared me very well for the next stages of my life: not only

my academic subjects, but being more independent in my

studies and outside of school and taking new opportunities.

The Sixth Form team was fantastic in helping me narrow down

my university choices. Their expertise and knowledge on

universities all over the world was integral to my decision, and

they were always there to talk with me when I needed advice.

UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE AND

CAREERS GUIDANCE

Many of our students gain places at the world’s leading universities including Oxford, Cambridge and

the Ivy League. It is part of our job to support students in their choices once they leave school, and our

Careers and University Guidance team provides all the information, support and guidance students

need to make the right decision about what they do after Sixth Form.

Students are expected to work hard towards their goal of reaching their first choice of university and/

or career path. All receive one-on-one guidance to help them decide which course and higher

education establishment best fits their profile, including understanding the entry procedures and specific

requirements for applications to institutions all over the world. We also have an Assistant Head of

Senior School in charge of highly selective university entrance who can guide students wishing to study

at highly selective universities.

17

LEADING THE COMMUNITY

Reaching the Sixth Form is a significant milestone in a student’s education, and the school offers a

range of highly sought after leadership opportunities. Student leaders take on substantial positions of

responsibility in both the school and the wider community.

Our six Head Students lead the entire student community. Similarly, House Captains lead their Houses

across the Senior School, and they too are appointed by the Principal. Prefects are responsible for

the effective day to day running of the campus and act as ambassadors for the school in the wider

community.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

In order to ensure that students can successfully access the curriculum, we have a minimum expectation

of prior attainment. All students applying to the School will be interviewed by the Head of Sixth Form

and take a series of entrance tests.
