Precious
metals
In Australia the majority of engagement rings are made
from 18ct or 9ct gold, however as we have become an
increasingly multicultural society, tradition has evolved.
Stephens Jewellers can create your wedding bands to
match your engagement ring in virtually any of these
precious metals. 9ct, 14ct, 18ct and 22ct gold. Many styles
can also be crafted in platinum, palladium or lightweight
titanium.
GOLD
Prized since prehistoric
times, gold is the perfect
precious metal for
jewellery manufacturing
as it doesn’t rust, tarnish
or corrode. It can combine
with other metals to make
it more durable and create
variations in the finished
colour as represented in
the below forms.
24CT GOLD
In its purest form, 24 carat
(ct) gold is considered
too soft for general
jewellery use.
9CT OR 18CT
GOLD
18ct gold is 18/24 parts or
75% (750) pure gold and
is heavier than 9ct gold,
which is 9/24 parts or
37.5% (375) pure gold. 18ct
yellow gold has a richer,
more golden colour than
9ct and tends to retain
its appearance better as
it ages over the years.
For this reason 18ct is
preferred for engagement
and matching wedding
rings.

WHITE & ROSE
GOLD
Pure yellow gold can
be mixed with different
metals to create popular
colours such as white or
rose gold. Today, many
rings incorporate multiple
colours, which gives you
the freedom to mix and
match white, rose and
yellow gold to create your
perfect ring. White gold
jewellery is generally
finished with a surface
coating of rhodium,
another natural metal that
gives the bright finished
lustre. This coating will
need reapplying over
time to retain white gold
brilliance.
PLATINUM &
PALLADIUM
Unlike other white metals,
platinum and palladium
do not require rhodium
plating and their natural
brilliance makes them the
perfect choice for jewellery
that will last virtually
forever. Titanium is also
increasingly used in men’s
modern wedding band
designs, as it’s known for
its light-weight, yet highly
durable characteristics.
We are also often able to
combine a variety of these
precious metals for a truly
spectacular and hardwearing

Popular Diamond
setting Types
Diamond set wedding bands are increasingly popular
and properly balanced with your engagement ring,
they create a spectacular effect that enhances the
overall design.
The most popular designs incorporate either a channel
setting, bead setting or fine claw setting. Pave setting
of small shoulder diamonds on engagement rings can
also be complimented. To simplify the selection process,
we have developed a comprehensive sample collection
so our consultants can show you the exact effect of the
wedding band and engagement ring before we make it
to your size.
A modern styling trend is to incorporate split wedding
bands or two identical finer diamond set bands worn
either side of your engagement ring.
Once you have determined the right setting style and
diamond point size, we can then work out the right number
of diamonds and the best profile or surface curvature of
the band to compliment your engagement ring. As a tip
with any styling, an odd number of diamonds works best.
