A unique experience of experimental theatre shaped in a
public master class led by playwright Nicholas Patricca
and director Cecilie Keenan, The Fifth Sun: 2012
recreates Patricca’s 1984 play in the context of the “end
of the Mayan calendar.” In each performance, selected
scenes are offered in a staged playreading, with engaging
commentary by Patricca and Keenan. The original artwork and masks from
the première of the play are used, with ritual music and movement, using
the great possibilities for staging
offered by Rockefeller Chapel’s
architecture. The gods and
guardians oversee the action, as
in Meso-American tradition, and
Archbishop Oscar Romero takes
his place among those declared
“¡Presente!”
With Whayne Braswell and Ray
Coyle, music, Rick Paul, design,
Caitlin Langlin, masks and ritual
movement, and Wilfredo Rivera,
dance.

Le Vorris & Vox, the University of Chicago’s own 20-person circus
network and troupe, returns to Rockefeller Chapel for its spring show, two
performances in collaboration with University Theatre: a magical blending
of theatre, acrobatic feats, aerials, dance, hooping, hand manipulation,
steam-punk marvels, and dreamscapes, all in the splendid setting of
the Chapel, to music composed by students for the show. This is sure
to be an epic spectacle of student talent and collaboration. Come for an
entertaining, thought-provoking, and beautiful event for the whole campus
community!
