4Moses said, "So said the Lord, At the dividing point of the night, I will go out
into the midst of Egypt,
5and every firstborn in the land of Egypt will die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh
who sits on his throne to the firstborn of the slave woman who is behind the
millstones, and every firstborn animal.
6And there will be a great cry throughout the entire land of Egypt, such as
there never has been and such as there shall never be again.
7But to all the children of Israel, not one dog will whet its tongue against either
man or beast, in order that you shall know that the Lord will separate between
the Egyptians and between Israel.

Prostitutes would use their fees for mitzvot, thinking to atone for their sins..
Similarly, with regards to the price of a dog, for those who hunt with dogs and
those who guard the city walls raise brazen dogs that damage the public and
make vows with the revenue of their sale as an atonement for their souls.

Price of a dog: for dogs, as well, are brazenly licentious in public, they are never

Price of a dog- A licentious male. Similarly in the Book of Revelation, “Outside
are the dogs and the sorcerers and the sexually immoral, and the murderers…”
The proof is from the expression, “abomination to the Lord,” for a dog is
among His creatures and it is impossible to characterize its behavior or its price
as an abomination.

not uncommon in the Oriental cults.

He shall not wag his tongue in order to bark. In contrast to the sound of wailing

“You shall throw it to the dog”: To teach you that the Lord does not hold back

The reason that the “lamed” is vocalized with a “patach” (indicating the
definite article) is that it guards your flock, and it is most appropriate that none
other than that dog eat the torn animal.

Malbim
The interpretation is like Ibn Ezra… for it guards the possessions of its master
and his flock. And it guarded the flock of its Master in Egypt and knows its
creator and guarded His flock and did not bark at them. And even though
animals are not relevant to reward and punishment since their actions are
instinctual, nevertheless, the Lord said to give it its reward so that we may learn
from this ethical teaching, to know the ways of the Lord- that even more so
there is reward and punishment for human beings, who possess free-will.

Rabbi Yehuda says: During the generation that the son of David comes, the hall of
the assembly of the Sages will be designated for prostitution, and the Galilee will be
destroyed, and the Gavlan, i.e., Bashan, will be desolate, and the residents of the
border who flee the neighboring gentiles will circulate from city to city and will
receive no sympathy. The wisdom of scholars will diminish, and sin-fearing people
will be despised. And the face of the generation will be like the face of a dog. And the

Maharsha
“like the face of a dog”- See Rashi. It seems to me to explain that it is called
“kelev” because it is “kulo lev” (all heart) and faithful to its master. The Talmud
said that the “face” of that generation will be like the face of a dog. It will show
its “face” as if it loves, but its heart will not be consistent. In truth, the love that
is on the face will be absent from the heart.

The students of Rabbi Elazar asked him: For what reason does a dog recognize its master,
while a cat does not recognize its master? Rabbi Elazar said to them: If it is established that
with regard to one who eats from that which a mouse eats, eating that item causes him to
forget, with regard to the cat, who eats the mouse itself, all the more so does eating it cause it
to forget.
Maharal
Not all animals are alike. There are some who have more intelligence than
others, for there are among them that possess a soul and consequently,
intelligence. And there are among them those that are devoid of intelligence
altogether. This is the meaning of the Talmudic assertion that a dog recognizes
its owner, for as explained in the Tractate Bava Kama (60b), dogs possess a soul,
and therefore possess consciousness. For this reason, they are called “kelev,”
“kulo lev”- all heart. The cat, on the other hand is the opposite. It does not
recognize its owner, that is, its master.
This is not due to the stupidity of the cat, but rather to its lack of a soul. This is
the opposite of the dog to whom Isaiah (56) refers to as being of “brazen souls”
(azei nefesh). This term indicates that they possess a nefesh (soul) and the term
azei indicates “exaggeration” of soul. It is due to this quality that dogs know
their owners…

The dog knows it master and dedicates all its senses and limbs to his service. It is
urgent in guarding the life and possessions of its master from thieves and
robbers. It will climb mountains; places were no human would go and not fear

the altar of love for its master. It will remain loyal to its master even when
stabbed and shot with arrows to kill it.

Renunah shel Torah
Midrash Talpiyot quotes from Shalshelet Hakabalah that Cyrus, King of Persia,
had a phenomenal memory, to the extent that when he would pay his 600,000
soldiers, he would remember the name of each. The Ben Yehoyada explains
that, as it known, Cyrus, as a child, was raised in a cave by a dog that nursed
him. For this reason, he is named “Cyrus,” meaning “dog,” in Persian. For this
reason, Cyrus merited to have a great memory, since the dog is “kulo lev,” all
heart (intellect), and he, therefore, merited to have an expansive heart and
intellect, since he nursed from a dog.
When one rises from bed in the morning, he should picture the image of a dog,
for it knows its owner and is faithful to its master. In Pardes Chana the author
quotes a certain sage that this is the intention of the Talmud when it says,
“From when can one say the Shema? From the time when one can distinguish
between a wolf and a dog.” That is to say, when one rises from his bed in the
morning, he should picture the image of a dog, for it knows its owner and is
faithful to its master. So too, a person should accept upon himself the yoke of
the service of God, renewed each morning…
