Christmas Past!It’s the time of year when thoughts might turn to previous Christmases and in Delabole many families would pick a hollybush to decorate, often on Christmas Eve. The decorations might be made from milk bottle tops and sweet papers,whilst paper decorations were hung from the ceilings and, if you were really lucky, there was tinsel and a set of lightsfor the tree ...which were often temperamental and had to be constantly fixed. Some years perhaps one or two decorationswould be bought to add to the collection, then wrapped carefully to be brought out next year. You may still have someof these in use today and taking them out to decorate your trees can bring back such happy memories. And of coursethere were no outside decorations.Our mothers cooked for days, things such as sweet biscuits (rolled so thin that you could almost see through them andyou had to be very careful not to keep them in the oven for too long), gingerbreads, cakes and puddings and as a realtreat they bought a small amount of saffron to make a cake.Many branches of families lived in the village and we all walked to each other’s homes for tea and a special treat ...ameat supper. You could be visiting each other’s homes well towards the end of January! At these family events weplayed party games such as Guess Who, Ducky-ducky, Guess the articles on a tray etc. There was very little TV watched(if you had one) other than the Queen’s Speech and if you didn’t have a TV you listened to it on the radio.Before Christmas all the chapels(3) and the Church had children’s parties, nativity plays, Christmas socials - as did otherlocal organisations and I expect many of you recall Mrs Hubbard’s fancy dress parties, which she held in the ChurchHall.Well over 50 years ago the Gift Service was started. Village children brought toys that were still good but they felt theycould part with. Originally gifts were transported to the Lambeth Mission in London by one of our Slate quarry lorries,then by train, and in more recent years the toys were given to Cornish groups.The church, each chapel and the British Legion all had a Christmas bazaar, often with a visit from Father Christmas. Healso came by train to sit in the Co-Op.Members of the community organised bus excursions to the pantomimes at Bude or Plymouth, as very few families hadtransport and we sat in the theatre in a village block - great fun!I’m afraid it’s all a bit jumbled. It’s amazing what you can remember from the past - if not yesterday!This is one person’s memories of Delabole life over the past seventy years. What about sharing any of your childhoodmemories (not just of Christmas) with The Slate?Carrie Casserole’s Vegetable GratinYou will need an oven proof dish or casserole bottom.About 250 grams each of your favourite vegetables, eg:carrots, parsnips, broccoli, runner beans, leaks, swede,or onions.30 grams Butter or margarine.Salt and pepper.90 grams Grated cheese.30 grams Bread crumbsSingle cream or full cream milkPeel and cut all the vegetables into thick slices or chunks.Separate the cauliflower and broccoli into florets. Cookthe vegetables in a saucepan for 4 or 5 minutes, then drainwell.Smear butter all round an oven proof dish.Spoon all the cooled vegetables into the dish.Pour over enough single cream or milk to almost coverthe vegetables.Season with salt and pepper.Mix the grated cheese and bread crumbs together andsprinkle all over the top.Bake in the oven at 210 o c for about 35 minutes until thegratin is bubbling hot and golden brown.The gratin can be served on its own, hot or cold, with roastor cold meats or salad.RubbishA local resident picked up SOME of the litter she found inthe lay-by at the Camelford end of the village.Three plus bags of beer cans and other rubbish had beenthrown out and left. She picked up what she could butother items she couldn't collect, not even wearing rubbergloves.Besides the contents featured in the photograph there wasa child's scooter and some old tyres.We live in a beautiful county - let’s take care of it!Appropriately enough, the What 3 Words referencefor the lay-by is bombshell.backed.closes.
