01. BIRTH OF CRAVAT
Croatian mercenaries came to
France to support King Louis VIII.
The Croats used a piece of cloth
to tie the top of their uniforms. King
Louis adopted it as a mandatory
clothing accessory for Royal gatherings
after the war was over.
To honor the Croats, he gave it the
name. “La Cravate” - a name still
used in Frace Today

When King Louis XIV came to the
throne, Cravat-style neckwear
was very popular in France. In
1692, France was victorious at the
Battle of Steinkirk, a small village
called Steenkque, controlled by
the Dutch Republic.

03. BIRTH OF STOCK TIE
In the early 1700s, a new type of
tie became popular in the sport
of hunting and formal setting, the
Stock tie. Stock ties quickly became
more popular than Cravats
The French Military wrapped
their necks with Cravats and
twisted the ends of the fabric
through the button holes in their
shirts. This style of Cravats
became known as Steinkirks

04. BIRTH OF THE "TERM" TIE
In the early 1800s Cravats started to become known
as "Ties" because they are tied around the the neck.
Napoleon famously wore a white cravat at the Battle of
Waterloo before engaging into battle to commemorate
the Duke of Wellington favorite color.

02. BIRTH OF THE ASCOT TIE
The ascot originated during the later part of the 19th century
in Britain. It is named after the exclusive horse-race
"The Royal Ascot" - an event at which men were required
to wear this type of tie in combination with a tailcoat jacket
(also known as morning coat). Edward VII made the Ascot
Tie popular in the 1880s. Today ascots are rarely worn but
still spotted at very formal events and formal weddings.

HOW MANY
TIE KNO
ARE PO
Mikael Vejdemo Johansson, a
mathematician in Stockholm,
recently led a small team on a
quest to discern how many tie
knots are possible.
Their results, uploaded to
arXiv, say there are 177,147
different ways to tie the knot
of a necktie. That is 177,062
more ways than were found
in 1999 by Cambridge mathematicians
Yong Mao and
Thomas Fink, who arrived at
85 possible ways to tie a tie.

wore a bow tie during science experimentations to
set himself apart. He realized that bow ties are more
practical than regular ties when conducting science
demonstrations onstage because they don't get
caught in the Bunsen burner. He says, "So the bow tie
became my thing!"
