KT’s REPORT

An “explanation”, by Bob Lucas

Coordinator

I realise a lot of you will be unaware, and therefore will be shocked by this

terrible news I’m about to make public. Before you say “why wasn’t I told?”,

it was not done earlier because it was Ken’s personal business, and his own

choice to keep it “under the covers” so to speak.

Ken Tacon

Report

(by Bob Lucas)

In early September Ken was advised that his body was being ravaged by cancer,

and he has been fighting ever since, both in and out of hospitals, to slow

it’s progress. The pain that this insidious disease has inflicted upon him, and

of course Doreen, both physically and mentally, has been unbelievable!

As you should all be quite aware, Ken has been passionately involved with the

running of the Ulysses RV Members Group pretty well since it’s inception.

He was Rick Bedford’s loyal offsider for most of that time, until a few months

before his passing in 2019, and has been “the man in charge” ever since.

As his good “buddy”, and his “partner in crime” at the helm of this great organisation,

it has been heartbreaking for me to hear him struggling during

our daily phonecalls this past couple of months, yet be unable to help, or even

make a personal visit, due to QLD’s border closure.

Ken had intended to write his own report for this edition, but has been far too

unwell in recent times to get his mind together and put pen to paper, so I’m

penning this to advise all our members the reason for no KT’s Report in the

past two editions (yes, I spun you a yarn about his knee replacement back in

the September edition!).

I know you would all want to join myself and Marilyn in offering our

prayers, love and strength, and wishing Ken and Doreen the best

possible support and comfort, in their continuing battle to preserve

and prolong their time together.

G’day folk,

Yes, I’ve given Ken the front page of

this edition, and having read that, you

should now understand why.

What a taxing time the past couple of

years have been for us all, with some

affected much more than others, particularly

the Victorians! Hopefully

we can now move on and enjoy what

RV’ing is supposed to be all about,

without having to face border closures,

or even being prohibited from

leaving our own homes.

But while most of us have been lamenting

our locked down situations a

number of members did manage to

escape before the borders closed, and

have spent months enjoying the

climes of northern and western states.

Among them were the Hoyes and the

Baileys from NSW, and the Hooks

from QLD … in fact last I heard the

Hooks were still out there, bogged at

Menindee Lakes … but it should dry

out in a month or two!

While the authorities preached and

promoted the benefits of the Covid

vaccines, our good mate Jill Foster

from NSW is not one of them! Her

immune system reacted quite violently

to the jab, and she has spent close to 2

months in Newcastle hospitals. We

all wish Jill a safe

and complete recovery.

We take great pleasure in

welcoming Tasmania to

our folds, with members

Mike Meyman and Gary

Rush as their State Coordinators.

Good luck guys, the membership applications

have really been rolling in,

and we look forward to meeting you

somewhere along the track!

At our recent rally

in Tuncurry, a record

breaker for

NSW, we were

joined by Bruce and

Merilyn from Port

Stephens. For those

who don’t know,

Merilyn (aka Leo

Evans DM) was the

person who sourced and presented our

mascot Kermit (aka Arvie) to Rick at

the Albany AGM back in 2010.

We wish

Pete and

Judi all the

best during

their frustrating

time

building their new home in WA, and

hope you can be inside for Christmas

celebrations.

And talking of Christmas, I take this

timely opportunity to wish all our

members a safe and happy one, and a

new year that’s free of Covid and

other nasties!

Stay safe, and stay erect!

from

around

the traps

** WEBSITE vs FACEBOOK **

Our hardworking webmaster Richard is

quite concerned that our website is not

being visited as much as it should be,

and members are sending in questions

regarding coming rallies etc when their

answers are already on the website.

While Facebook is a great tool, our page

is for casual “conversations” and pictures

from our members.

While we attempt to advertise rallies etc

on there, it doesn’t always happen.

We encourage you all to make more use

of our website at ulyssesrv.org to learn

about your state’s coming events.

… and while talking of FACEBOOK:-

We continue to receive heaps of Ulyssians

requesting access to our RV Group Facebook

page. Beauty!

But as spelt out when applicants apply, to

gain access to our Facebook page:

YOU MUST FIRST BE A REGISTERED

MEMBER OF THE RV GROUP, and

COMPLETE THE QUESTIONS!

Just go to ulyssesrv.org and join up, and

THEN request Facebook access.

You will be granted access as soon as your

name appears on our membership register.

If that is not done, you will be declined until

you follow the proper procedure for access.

The 2020 Mudgee AGM which was cancelled

due to Covid-19 has been reconvened

to 17-24 October 2022.

Our NSW and AGM Coordinators Ian and

just before the lockdowns hit NSW.

It will be held at Mudgee AREC Centre

There are lots of wineries to visit in the

area, and historic goldmining towns

nearby. More information will posted as

things are sorted, so stay tuned …

Omission from Tuncurry Report

RIP “BIGGLES”

It is with sadness we inform

our members that Graeme King

(aka Biggles) from Victoria

passed away peacefully on Monday

11 th October.

We extend our love and

condolences to his wife

Ariel and family

While perusing Ian’s Tuncurry Rally report I

was intrigued to notice no mention was made

of the day the Toonens, Rowles’ & Richo’s

rode out on their bikes, only to return 10

minutes later, apparently to equip themselves

with the obligatory masks required to

attend cafés and pubs these days.

I can only presume money changed hands, to

secure Ian’s silence ...

A reminder – KERMIT, the info portal for the ULYSSES RV GROUP, can be accessed at

www.ulyssesrv.org

A couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things. During a check-up, the

doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to

help them remember.

Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair, 'Want anything while I'm in

the kitchen?' he asks.

'Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?'

'Sure.'

'Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?' she asks.

'No, I can remember it.'

'Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too. Maybe you should write it down, so as not to forget

it?'

He says, 'I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries.'

'I'd also like whipped cream. I'm certain you'll forget that, write it down?' she asks.

Irritated, he says, 'I don't need to write it down. I can remember it! Ice cream with strawberries

and whipped cream - I got it, for goodness sake!'

Then he toddles into the kitchen. After about 20 minutes, the old man returns from the kitchen

and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs.

She stares at the plate for a moment ...

'Where's my toast?'

2021

Happy hour @ Neurum Creek

In a beautiful bush setting just west of

Woodford, with limited number of

powered sites, over 15 RVs registered

“on-line” with the management at

Neurum. The occasional storm came

through, but nothing could dampen

our spirits at being able to be in the

wide-open outdoors while our southern cousins are suffering in lockdown.

On this tag-a-long we made welcome new members and guests joining in with our

group that is growing in numbers. Two of our campers, Gloria and SuzieBee, who get

so much pleasure out of singing, entertained with Gordon around the fire one night.

The famous FINSKA tournament was held, with the winners being challenged by other

competitors keen to knock them from their pedestal at the next stop.

The creek was low, so no kayaking, but Darrel still

put in his red-claw pots. Yep! All the big ones got

away.

Blip led us on a merry 4x4 trip up through the forests

to Jimna on some “back” roads, with low lying

clouds making the ranges very appealing. And

don’t forget to mention the yummy pies at the Kilcoy

Bakery.

FINSKA - Winners are grinners!

A couple of our members are keen campfire lighters, & keep the wood supply up.

Thanks fellas!

Trevor collected mulberries from his “private” tree to share with fellow members,

some enjoyed walking through the retreat’s 127 hectares and enjoying the views from

high up on the ridge, therapy was experienced at the Op Shops back at Woodford,

while those who enjoy crafting, shared their creations at Stitch & Chatter sessions under

van awnings, enthusing each other to share ideas.

Time then to hitch up and head to Part B, and a gathering with some newer members.

TOOGOOLAWAH SHOWGROUNDS:

It was a short trek across country to Toogoolawah

Showgrounds where we had been allocated

the “front paddock” by the Show Society,

which did not seem too appealing to me in our

early discussions, but turned out to be ideal!

Happy Hours were spent in a shady spot under the trees, and as storm rain had

drenched the township the whole area was a masterpiece of green!

23 RVs, motorhomes, 5 th Wheelers, vans and campers set up in

the paddock. What a top group to share in what Toogoolawah

has to offer!

The Brisbane Rail Trail was enjoyed by some members who brought along their mountain

hips replaced arrived on her trusty motorbike, while Bob towed in the camper. And

Louise shared 2 very tasty cakes with us, which she had made, and which we enjoyed

around the campfire. Thank you, Louise!!

The Exchange Hotel did a sterling job to provide a Saturday evening meal, for 43 of us,

yes, 43!! ‘Twas good to see Helen, from Esk, join us for dinner.

A 4x4 trip to view the tunnel on the rail

trail, then around Mt Bepo Rd, again

ably led by Blip. To give us even more

thrill Blip led us via back roads to Jimna,

then on to Crows Nest. Well-formed

dirt roads this time, which leads us to

believe Blip is getting a little soft, but he

proves time and time again to find us

Numbers in our group are growing, but what is the most pleasant thing is that it remains

small enough for everyone to find new friends, chat and keep the spirit of

“Growing Old Disgracefully” alive and well.

Less than 4 weeks before our final get-together for 2021, and next year’s Forward

Report

It was decided after the temp of 43 o at Esk rally last

year to head to the coast in December2021, rather

than an inland venue - what a good decision! The

weather was so kind, even though storm season was

truly upon us.

Speaking of STORMS! During the last part of the year Ken, our Aussie Ulysses RV Coordinator,

received a “not so good” cancer diagnosis and, together with wife Doreen &

family, are having to deal with the struggle of their lives. They were hoping to pop into

Scarness and visit us, as it was not too far from their home in Curra, but Ken’s ill health

precluded that.

The love of all Ulyssians, and especially the RV Group, is extended to

Ken and Doreen as they deal with Ken’s present health concerns

Drinks on the deck

As Blip and Di had travel plans of a different

kind, & their tentative plans to head to Tasmania

to family and friends came to fruition, we

certainly missed their company; however, fires

not being allowed at the caravan park, and a

token gravel road on the Poker Run was a substitute

for the long winding roads of dirt and

gravel, we did cope in a small way.

For this year’s Christmas Rally, an invitation was issued to Sue and Trevor to be our local

contacts and plan the event, with satisfying results. This was, by far, our largest

rally for Queensland, with 63 bookings made

for the Hervey Bay Boat Club Saturday Night

co-ordinated a “Poker Run” to 4 various sites in the Winners are Grinners - Poker Run

The French President is sitting in his office when his telephone rings.

‘Hallo, Mr. Macron !' A heavily accented voice said. 'This is Paddy down at the Harp Pub in County Clare,

Ireland. I am ringing to inform you that we are officially declaring war on you ! We voted to reject the

Lisbon treaty !'

'Well Paddy’, Macron replied; ‘How big is your army ?'

'Right now,' says Paddy, after a moment's calculation, 'there is myself, me Cousin Sean, me next door

neighbour Seamus, and the entire darts team from the pub. That makes eleven!'

Macron paused. 'I must tell you, Paddy, that I have 100,000 men in my army waiting to move on my command.'

'Begorra!' says Paddy. ‘I'll have to ring you back.'

Sure enough, the next day, Paddy calls again. 'Mr. Macron, the war is still on, we have managed to get us

some infantry equipment!'

'And what equipment would that be Paddy ?' Macron asks. 'Well, we have two combines, a bulldozer, and

Murphy's farm tractor.'

Macron sighs amused. 'I must tell you, Paddy, that I have 6,000 tanks and 5,000 armoured personnel carriers.

Also, I have increased my army to 150,000 since we last spoke.

'Saints preserve us!' says Paddy. 'I'll have to get back to you.'

Sure enough, Paddy rings again the next day. 'Mr. Macron, the war is still on! We have managed to get ourselves

airborne ! We have modified Jackie McLaughlin's ultra-light with a couple of shotguns in the cockpit,

and four boys from the Shamrock Bar have joined us as well!'

Macron was silent for a minute and then cleared his throat; 'I must tell you, Paddy, that I have 100 bombers

and 200 fighter planes, my military-bases are surrounded by laser-guided, surface-to-air missile sites,

and since we last spoke, I have increased my army to 200,000!'

'Jesus, Mary, and Joseph !' says Paddy, 'I will have to ring you back. Sure enough, Paddy calls again the

next day. 'Top o' the mornin', Mr. Macron! I am sorry to inform you that we have had to call off the war.'

'Really? I am sorry to hear that,' says Macron, 'why the sudden change of heart ?'

'Well,' says Paddy, 'we had a long chat over a few pints of Guinness and packets of crisps, and

we decided there is no f****n' way we can feed 200,000 prisoners!

On their way to get married, a young Catholic couple is involved in a fatal car accident.

The couple found themselves sitting outside the Pearly Gates waiting for St. Peter to

process them into Heaven.

While waiting, they began to wonder: Could they possibly get married in Heaven?

When St. Peter showed up, they asked him. St. Peter said, "I don't know. This is the

first time anyone has asked. Let me go find out," and he left.

The couple sat and waited, and waited. Two months passed, and the couple were still

waiting. While waiting, they began to wonder what would happen if it didn't work out;

could you get a divorce in heaven?

After yet another month, St. Peter finally returned, looking somewhat bedraggled.

"Yes," he informed the couple, "You can get married in Heaven."

"Great!" said the couple, "But we were just wondering, what if things don't work out?

Could we also get a divorce in Heaven?"

St. Peter, red-faced with anger, slammed his clipboard onto the ground.

"What's wrong?" asked the frightened couple.

"OH, COME ON!," St. Peter shouted, "It took me three months to find a priest up here!

Do you have any idea how long it'll take me to find a lawyer?"

VACANCY

After serving our group as a Victorian Coordinator for the past 10 years,

Marilyn Flinders had given notice that she would stand down from the Coordinator’s

position at the Cohuna AGM. Marilyn extends her thanks to

those who helped her over the years, and offers very best wishes to whoever

takes the position on.

On behalf of Ken Tacon and myself, many thanks to Marilyn for her efforts

over the years.

If you are interested in helping out, or know of anyone who may be, could

you please advise Janice and Fred at victoria@ulyssesrv.org and Ken and

myself at admin@ulyssesrv.org.

While it is not essential to have two pairs of coordinators per state, it is

smarter, just in case one pair become unavailable, for whatever reason.

For those who don’t know, The

town of Ross, on the banks of the

Macquarie River in central Tasmania,

noted attractions are the historic

bridge, female factory prison,

original sandstone buildings and

convict history.

Much for all to see!

Inaugural

Rally

Five blokes in an Audi Quattro arrived at the Tasmanian ferry checkpoint in Melbourne.

Tracey, in her brand new uniform, stops them and tells them: "I can't let you on

the ferry. It is illegal to have 5 people in a Quattro. Quattro means four.

One of you will have to get out and stay behind."

"Quattro is just the name of the car," the driver replies disbelievingly. "Look at

the papers: this car is designed to carry five persons!"

"You can’t pull that one on me! This is Tracey you're talking to!" she replies with a

smile. "Quattro means four. You have five people in your car, and you are therefore

breaking the law. So I can't let you onto the ferry. It's more than my job's

worth to let you all on."

The driver is now very cross and replies angrily, "I've had enough of you! Call your

supervisor over. I want to speak to someone with more intelligence!"

"Sorry," responds Tracey,

"but Sharon is busy with those two blokes in the Fiat Uno."

UMRV -WA RALLY REPORT – September Silo Tag-A-Long

Day 1: The group started with 3 vans meeting at the Quinninup Eco Park on

14th September, where we started our journey around the Southwest, Great

Southern and Wheat belt following the Silos of WA. We were greeted by the

locals and a huge mass of Gnomes. Over the years since our first visit, the

gnomes have grown.

Albany silo

Day 2: We started our travels through to Albany, where we saw our

first silo of the tour - the “RED SEADRAGON”. A short stopover for

lunch, where we caught up with Arvie, Keith & Val, at the Amity, then

off to Borden Showgrounds for our free camp. Along

our way we stopped at The Good Food Factory for toffee,

sauces & ice cream. One of the very ‘friendly’

guard “Geese” managed to chase me off but not without my stash of toffees –

bloody thing reminded me of my grandmother’s house when I was growing up.

She had the same things and they used to chase me and my sister all the time,

and we lived there!

Day 3: We travelled to Ravensthorpe where we caught up with Liz, Jon & Max at the Shot

Over Nature Reserve. Lunch at the local café, where

Gerda, Val & myself headed across the road to pick up

lollipops from the World’s Largest Lollipop Shop, check

out the local Quilting Shop, then on the Wildflower

Expo, where we caught up with the men and Liz & Jon

at the Town Hall. Ravensthorpe and Districts has over 2000 wildflower

species, and they were all on full display. An entry fee of $5 got you in to see some of the

most beautiful wild orchards and flowers. Ravensthorpe Silo represents the 6 stages of the

Banksia.

Newdegate silo

Ravensthorpe silo

Day 4: Today we travelled across to Pingrup via Newdegate. The

silo at Newdegate represents the local fauna (Western Bearded

Dragon, Red-tailed phascogate, Mallee fowl and an emblematic

depiction of the region).

We then travelled on to Pingrup where

we decided to stay overnight in the

caravan park, as the Pingrup Arms manager advised that the camping

area behind the pub was a bit messy. We were to have dinner at

Pingrup Silo

the pub, but as the meals started too late for most of us, we utilised

the camp kitchen and had a spontaneous dinner.

Katanning Street Art

Day 5: On our way to spend 2 days at Katanning. I woke up early

to make scones for our morning tea at Katanning All-ages Playground.

By the time we made it to Katanning the rain had set in

24

and we were unable to have our morning tea. We made our way over the RV park in the middle

of town and then headed off to the local Dome Café for Brunch. The RV park in Katanning is

brilliant. Fully sealed with dump point & fresh water. Toilets etc are only a couple hundred

metre across the road. Midweek dinner was had at the Fuxing Family Chinese Restaurant (yes,

that is the name!). Highly recommend the meals here. Although Katanning doesn’t have any

painted silo, the town has many public buildings that have been painted, and the walk around

town (between showers of rain) is worth it.

Day 6: Due to the rain we decided that it would be better to travel on and stay

overnight at Kulin RV Park. Terry & Lesley decided to go home as his back was

causing problems, so we waved them off and headed to the Tin Horse Highway.

Overnight at another fantastic free camp in the middle of town with toilets and

FREE HOT showers. Which was wonderful considering the weather was still

cold and wet. A couple of quiet drinks at the local pub to

say thank you for the showers. On our way through we

stopped to have morning tea with Arvie at Dumbleyung

and checked out the replica of “Bluebird” K& Hydroplane

used by Donald Campbell for his world water speed record.

Day 7: Today we cut the trip short by 1 day as Keith & Val had problems

with their motorhome and decided it was safer to get home than to break

down in the middle of nowhere. We all followed them as far as Beverley,

where the remaining 3 had an overnighter at Beverley RV Park – another

wonderful find on the shores of the Avon River. Keith & Val made it home

safely without any further dramas.

Day 8: Andy & Gerda leave us today to head home. We all decided that we would do the remaining

2 silo’s (Merriden & Northam) at a later date. Liz & John, Pete & I head off to Boddington

to catch up with a friend who has just moved there. What a wonderful free camp they

have there also. Parked up alongside the Hotham River with a view to die for. The toilets were a

few hundred metres away, where during the day we had a surprise

visitor that needed to cross the road where we were walking. Dinner

at the Boddington Hotel saw an end to our Silo Tour.

I created a recipe book of our journey (based on the original plan)

and this was given out to all that attended.

Thank you to all that came along on our journey, we hope that you had a great time

like we did.

I look forward to catching up with you all soon.

Coordinator

required!

***

*** NB After the February 2022 Birthday Bash I will no longer be available to continue

as Coordinator for the UMRV-WA Group. I am asking members to consider taking on

the role, as we will be travelling around Australia from July 2022 until sometime in

2023 ***

This role is very easy to manage, and it really needs to have a fresh outlook. Perhaps one of the

Perth/Armadale members will consider this, as they have regular RV meets, and they could incorporate

the rest of the members.

I would hate to see this Group dissolve due to lack of anyone taking on the role.

Please let me know if you are interested.

Thanks, Judi

An 80-year-old man is having a drink in Harpoon Harry's.

Suddenly a gorgeous girl enters and sits down a few seats away.

The girl is so attractive that he just can't take his eyes off her.

After a short while, the girl notices him staring, and approaches him.

Before the man has time to apologize, the girl looks him deep in the eyes and says

to him in a sultry tone;

"I'll do anything you'd like. Anything you can imagine in your wildest dreams, it

doesn't matter how extreme or unusual it is, I'm game.

I want $100, and there's another condition."

Completely stunned by the sudden turn of events, the man asks her what her condition

is.

"You have to tell me what you want me to do in just three words."

The man takes a moment to consider the offer from the beautiful woman ...

He whips out his wallet and puts $100 dollars into her hand.

He then looks her square in the eyes, and says slowly and clearly:

"Paint my house."
