Whether on water or land, a holiday without obstacles
is of the utmost importance throughout Bavaria and is
the number one priority for hosts in the Free State. If
you face seemingly insurmountable barriers in many
places due to physical or mental disability, you will
find an extensive network of providers in the holiday
region of Bavaria who consider themselves ideal
travel destinations for people with and without
disabilities. Travellers with bicycles, families with
pushchairs or elderly guests benefit from this.
This brochure features a selection of regions,
places and destinations in Bavaria that make
such a carefree stay possible. From Franconia to
Upper Bavaria, from Allgäu/Bavarian Swabia to
Eastern Bavaria – on the following pages you
will find tips for barrier-free holidays, leisure
and accommodation, which have been tested
and certified in accordance with the nationwide
“Tourism for All” labelling system.
Detailed information on the user-friendliness of
the individual offers in Bavaria is available at:
Certification: Tourism for All
With “Tourism for All”, a nationwide uniform certification
scheme was created, which provides the necessary
detailed information for different needs groups. Based on
this information and the filter options, tourist offers can
be specifically selected and checked prior to departure,
so that each guest can assess what offers are suitable for
them.
Independent and especially trained survey staff collect
comprehensive data and accessibility information on
site, which is checked against the “Tourism for All”
quality criteria. The quality criteria have been
developed over many years as part of a coordination
and cooperation between Deutsches Seminar für
Tourismus Berlin e. V. (DSFT) and stakeholders and
tourist organisations. In addition, at least one member
of staff in each case is familiar with the special requirements
of different groups of guests.
Where can I find this information?
The verified and detailed offer information can be
viewed at www.reisen-fuer-alle.de and
www.bavaria.by/experiences/accessible-tourism
The detailed result reports are also available to the
individual companies.
As part of the “Tourism for All” certification scheme,
more than 2,000 companies and offers have now been
certified nationwide. These include accommodation,
leisure and cultural facilities or even entire locations.
Holiday in the fairy-tale forest
The Main Valley and the Nature Park Spessart form a fascinating interplay of landscapes. Endless
leafy canopies of century-old giant trees meet fairytale-like meadow valleys and gentle cultivated
landscapes. Sun-drenched terraced vineyards along the mighty River Main and its numerous tributaries
are pierced by steep red sandstone cliffs. You can feel the breath of yesteryear in the picturesque
half-timbered towns such as Lohr am Main and Miltenberg, and in the many medieval fortresses and
imposing castles that tell the story of a truly magical region.
Among the rustling of
leaves
The largest contiguous area of
mixed deciduous forest in Germany
is perfect for delightful hiking tours
and can be experienced in a special
way for young and old: the
adventure trails in the Spessart and
their stations are barrier-free.
Explore different aspects of nature
and culture, playfully and using all
the senses: “height and gravity” in
Rothenbuch, “nature and water” in
Mespelbrunn and “balance and
lightness” in Mönchberg. The latter
lures visitors with action fields
featuring basket swings, balancing
discs, wheelchair seesaws and
balancing ropes.
Journey back to the
Middle Ages
A visit to Miltenberg and its unique
half-timbered houses and world-famous
“Schnatterloch” with market
fountain and the oldest “Fürstenherberge”
in Germany will remain
engraved in your memory. One of
the most beautiful museums in
Bavaria is the Museum Stadt
Miltenberg, where you can take a
journey through time – with audio
guides – and learn the exciting
history of eras past. In the hill castle
of Mildenburg, built high above the
old town around the year 1200,
icons and contemporary works of
art are presented in a dynamic
manner. The exhibition is partially
barrier-free and guided tours for the
visually impaired are offered.
Bathing fun &
relaxation
The Wonnemar Marktheidenfeld
offers 9,500 sqm of leisure fun at
the highest level. In the thermal
baths, spend a day gliding down
the tube slide, or in the Wonniland
for the little ones, relaxing in the
tranquillity of the sauna area, in the
SPA or thermal area as if you were
flying.
The Schöllkrippen natural
adventure pool lies in a beautiful
scenic location. In the summer
months, it is a popular destination
in the upper Kahlgrund,
especially for families. Visitors
can expect a natural diving rock, a
can sample lovingly prepared
delicacies from the abbey garden.
The abbey tavern and the hotel
The Franconian Lake District is as rich in contrasts as it is unifying: the totally accessible
lakes offer leisure fun for everyone. Barrier-free riverside paths, excursion boats and the
impressive nature around the Altmühlsee and Brombachsee will lure you outdoors. An
insight into the world of hops and beer brewing can be obtained at the ground-level “HopfenBierGut”
museum. There, a brewing course will teach you about the origins of beer.
Other museums, sights and theatres in the Franconian Lake District take care of the cultural
Located at the foot of the Kaiserburg, Nuremberg’s medieval old town offers numerous cafés and beer
gardens along the Pegnitz, as well as numerous shopping options. Here you can enjoy both the famous
Elisenlebkuchen, as well as the small Rostbratwürste as “Drei im Weggla” (three in a bun) or the typical
red beer. Throughout the year, Nuremberg offers a varied cultural programme – while in spring, the
façades are bathed in colour during the Blue Night, in summer, the Bardentreffen or the Klassik Open Air
create a great atmosphere and in the second half of the year, the Altstadtfest and the famous Nuremberg
Christmas market attract large crowds. As the city of the Nuremberg Rallies, the city of racial laws and
city in which the trials of those responsible for the Nazi regime took place, the city of Nuremberg has for
many decades faced the task of overcoming its past and at the same time shaping its present and future
as a “city of peace and human rights”.
Danube Gorge with its rugged rocks
at its most beautiful on a boat trip
As far back as the 19th century, the aristocracy
became interested in this picturesque region, which
is why King Ludwig I declared the area a natural
monument in 1840. Although the inland skipper
Renate Schweiger has known the area from an early
age, she is still impressed. “What fascinates me most
is the journey down from Weltenburg to Kelheim –
entering the Danube Gorge. There is a moment when
you see a closed layer of rock in front of you. Just
before you pass it, you really think you’re going to hit
the wall – it’s the most exciting moment for me every
time.”
Along the way you will find numerous caves as well as
truly rare plants and a special animal world. Guided
tours by the landscape preservation association teach
participants more about it.
It is a trip full of sensory impressions: with barrier-free
access as well as ramps or lifts, the new “MS Renate”
offers people with reduced mobility a carefree boat
experience. No matter who comes on board skipper
and Bavarian ambassador Renate Schweiger’s boat:
“The atmosphere is always good, but by no means
loud – just relaxed astonishment”, she says.
More unusual stories from Bavaria
Bavaria is, quite simply, traditionally different. And
that means a wealth of special experiences for holiday
makers. Bavaria’s ambassadors offer fascinating
insights into their lives: For example, in the Fichtel
Mountains you can find a romantic wild stream where
edible herbs grow. Experts from the “Edible Fichtel
Mountains” society turn these plants into delicious
products and dishes.
