More informationis available at https://www.montpelier-vt.org/parkexpansion.CompassVermont.Com is an independentpublication founded by a native Vermonter,providing non-editorial news and stories presentedin concert with the culture, mindset,and values of the Green Mountain State.• • •Groton Residents Found Guiltyof Interfering with Bear Hunters,Injuring HoundBy CompassVermont.comGROTON, Vt. - Two Groton residentswere issued citations by a Vermont StateGame Warden on November 11, following theinvestigation of an incident of hunter harassment.Both were found guilty of interferingwith hunters on November 22, in CaledoniaSuperior Court.Topsham resident Theodore Shumway andtwo companions were hunting black bear withhounds in the 26,000-acre Groton State Forestnear Noyes Pond on October 9, 2021. Abear led the hounds onto private property beforeclimbing a tree. The hunters entered thewoods from Buzzy’s Road and retrieved thehounds, leaving the bear in the tree.On returning to his truck with leashedhounds, Mr. Shumway encountered DonnaBabic and Betty Eastman releasing air fromthe tires of his truck. Following an argumentbetween the parties, one of the two womenallowed a German shepherd out of their vehicle.The loose German shepherd attackedand injured one of the leashed hounds, whichrequired veterinary care.Vermont State Troopers responded to anemergency call from Mr. Shumway to defusethe situation. A subsequent investigation bya Vermont State Game Warden found the licensedand permitted bear hunters to be actinglawfully. The game warden cited Ms. Babicand Ms. Eastman with violations of Title 10VSA 4708, Interfering with Hunting, Fishingor Trapping.“Vermonters don’t always agree on wildlifemanagement, especially when it comes to biggame,” said Colonel Jason Batchelder, Fishand Wildlife’s Chief Game Warden. “Evenso, I would ask that Vermonters respect oneanother’s constitutional right to hunt.
