start is considered quite unusual by poultry-men.
MURDER VICTIM MRS. E. PILLSWORTH WIDELY
MOURNED — Mrs. Elbert C.
Pillsworth, 30,
fatally assaulted
in her home at
Brampton on
Saturday evening.
Jan. 12, is widely
mourned by a host
of friends not only
in Brampton but
also in Woodbridge,
Orangeville and
other Peel County
communities.
Collapsing near the
telephone in their
home after the operator
at Brampton
exchange heard only a
few words of her plaintiff
call for help, she
later was found unconscious
by her husband.
He had rushed home from
his Brampton radio store
after advised by the telephone
operator that something
was wrong. She died
in a Toronto hospital the following
morning without
regaining consciousness.
Brampton town council has
offered a reward of $1,000
for information leading to
apprehension and conviction
of there murderer.
Until two and a half years ago,
Mr. and Mrs. Pillsworth had
resided in Woodbridge where the
former had operated a radio
store. Leaving Woodbridge, Mr.
Pillsworth became associated with
Trans-Canada Air Lines at Malton
and later opened his radio store in
Brampton. Their two children,
Linda, four years, and Donald,
seven months, are with relatives in
Toronto and still unaware of their
tragic loss.
Mrs. Pillsworth was the former Mary
Ellen Rutledge, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Rutledge, Orangeville. Her mother,
Mrs. Rutledge, was former Nellie Husband, daughter of the late Rev. William
Husband and Mrs. Husband. Mr. Husband, daughter of the late Rev. William
Husband and Mrs. Husband. Mr. Husband has at one time been pastor of the
Palgrave, Shiloh, King, and Black Horse Methodist Church circuit. Mr.
Rutledge, retiring from his monument business in Orangeville recently on
account of ill health, was in Florida with Mrs. Rutledge on a holiday hoping to
regain some of his former vigor. They returned by plane for the funeral which
was held on Wednesday.
COMPULSORY MOTOR INSURANCE — Compulsory insurance for
Saskatchewan motorists is regarded as virtually certain, reports The Financial
Post. Main Point remaining undecided is whether drivers shall be allowed to
choose any insurance company they prefer, or whether they will be required
to deal with the Government Insurance Office.
CERSWELL COW HAS MONTH'S RECORD OF 1,037 LBS. BUTTERFAT —
Princess Abbekerk Texal Fayne, a member of the Holstein herd of C. J.
Cerswell, of Beeton, has just completed a yearly Record of
Performance test of 1,037 lbs. fat from 25,701 lbs milk, average
test 4,.03% butterfat. Made on three-times-a-day milking as a
five-year-old, this is the largest record reported from any part
of the Dominion during the past month. Last year she stood
third for fat in the honor list with her twice-a-day milking fouryear-old
record of 754 lbs. milk.
Her production was expected to be larger but unfortunately
she suffered an injury that crippled her for a month of two
and cut down her productions. She received no special care,
running regularly with the rest of the herd.
A granddaughter of the noted Lonelm Texal Fayne, she was
bred by W. Witherspoon, Woodbridge, and was Grand
Champion at the 1944 Simcoe County Black and White
Show held at Beeton.
HAVE CROKINOLE PARTY, Macville — The first of a
series of community crokinole parties is begin held this
evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Strong.
BANQUET FOR SERVICEMEN, Maple — Mr. and Mrs.
Howard Knight of Maple Villa were host and hostess to
a complimentary banquet given in honor of the boys of
Maple who served in the armed forces, their ladies and
Maple Knit-Wit club, on Friday evening. December 28.
The toast to the guests was proposed by Mr. Knight
and responded to by Miss Marion Wason, president of
the Knit-Wit club, and Lorne Wells on behalf of the
boys. Mr. Evans of Toronto led an enjoyable sing song
and Jack Holland, magician, mystified the audience
with his performance. As the Knit-Wit club has
ceased activities, they presented the boys with initialed
wallets as a small tribute to them for the
services they have enjoyed during the remainder of
the evening.
HOW FAR CAN A DOG TRAVEL ON HIS OWN?
Several years ago T. A. Fec, a Vancouver architect,
shipped his dog, a Canadian Airdale, by express
from his British Columbia home to his brother-inlaw,
This. Paton, at Ardrossan, a station on the
Canadian National Railways, 16 miles east of
Edmonton, Alta. The charges were prepaid and
money given for food and care for Buster all
the way to his destination.
Time passed, however, and Buster failed to
show up. The railroad company produced a
receipt showing that Airedale had been delivered
to Edmonton. But after that the trail ran
out. Buster was given up fro lost.
Imagine Mr. Fee's surprise and joy six weeks later
when his Airedale came walking into the yard! Buster was thin and tired
and foot-sore, as if he had been traveling without any rest.
When his master came to check distances, he found the dog had covered 770
miles. From Edmonton to Vancouver there was no travelled road except the
railroad track, and this passes through and over three chains of mountains.
Add to that the fact that two-thirds of the way hadn't any homes along the
way except the railroad section houses, and it became clear what a feat Buster
had achieved.
How this Airdale had been able to pick the right one of 12 railroads converging
on Edmonton; how he had managed to find food through all those long
weeks and how, strangest of all, he had known those steel tracks would surely
lead him home will always remain one of the great mysteries of superhuman
animal intelligence!
SUFFERS SKATE CUT, Malton — Margaret Coulson 8-year-old daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Norman Coulson, is in the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, as a
result of complications arising from a skate cut received while playing near
her house a week ago. She is now getting along very nicely.

WOODSTOCK NOSTALGIA
SHOW AND SALE
The Reader, The Writer, and
The Lion
A lion comes across two men, one reading and the
other writing. The beast pounces on and devours the
reader but ignores the writer.
Why? Because, as everyone knows, a writer cramps
while a reader digests.
The Anxious Poodle
Poodle: “My life is a mess. My owner is mean, my girlfriend
is leaving me for a German shepherd, and I’m
nervous as a cat.”
Collie: “Why don’t you go see a psychiatrist?”
Poodle: “I can’t. I’m not allowed on the couch.”
The Impatient Flea
Tired of waiting in the back of the line to get on Noah’s
Ark, a flea jumps from one animal to another as she
moves closer to the front.
She leaps and leaps until she lands on the back of an
elephant. The pachyderm turns to its mate and says
testily,
“I knew it! Here they go with the pushing and shoving!”
A Penguin Walks Into…
A penguin walks into a bar, goes to the counter, and
asks the bartender,
“Have you seen my brother?”
The bartender says, “I don’t know. What does he look
like?”
A Panda Walks Into…
A panda walks into a bar and gobbles some beer nuts.
Then he pulls out a gun, fires it in the air, and heads
for the door.
“Hey!” shouts the bartender, but the panda yells back,
“I’m a panda. Google me!” Sure enough, panda:
“A tree-climbing mammal with distinct black-andwhitecoloring.
Eats shoots and leaves.”
A Grasshopper Hops Into…
A grasshopper hops into a bar. The bartender says,
“You’re quite a celebrity around here. We’ve even got a
drink named after you.”
The grasshopper says, “You’ve got a drink named
Steve?”
Chicken Prep
A man walks into a restaurant and says,
“How do you prepare your chickens?”
The cook replies, “Nothing special. We just tell ‘em
they’re gonna die.”
A Duck Walks Into a
Drugstore
A duck walks into a drugstore and asks for a tube of
ChapStick. The cashier says to the duck, “That’ll be
$1.49.” The duck replies, “Put it on my bill.”
Lunch Break
When a squirrel slipped into my house, I did the logical
thing: I panicked and called my father.
"How do you get a squirrel out of a basement?" I
shrieked.
Dad advised me to leave a trail of peanut butter and
crackers from the basement to the outside. It worked—
the squirrel ate his way out of the house.
Unfortunately, he passed another squirrel eating his
way in.
Flying Problems
A businessman flying first class is sitting next to a parrot.
The plane takes off, and the parrot orders a
Glenlivet, neat. The businessman asks for a Coke.
After a few minutes, the bird yells,
"Where’s my scotch? Give me my scotch!" The flight
attendant rushes over with their drinks.
Later, they order another round. Again, the bird gives
the crew grief for being slow, and the businessman
joins in:
"Yeah, the service stinks!"
Just then, the flight attendant grabs the pair, opens the
hatch, and throws them out of the plane. As they hurtle
toward the ground, the parrot says to the terrified man,
"Wow, that took a lot of guts for a guy with no wings."
Two babies are sitting in
their cribs…
Two babies are sitting in their cribs, when one baby
asks the other, “Are you a little girl or a little boy?”
The other baby shrugs. “I don’t know how to tell the difference.”
“I do,” says the first baby. He carefully climbs out of his
crib and into the other crib, then disappears beneath
the blankets. After a few seconds, he resurfaces.
“You’re a little girl, and I’m a little boy,” he says.
“How can you tell?”
“Easy. You’ve got pink booties, and I’ve got blue ones.”
Fast Friends
My husband was driving home from work when he was
pulled over for not wearing a seat belt. Two days later—
same ticket, same cop.
“So,” the officer said, “have you learned anything?”
“Yes, I have,” said my husband. “I’ve learned I need to
take a different way home from work.”
The One About The Stand-in
Gorilla
When a zoo’s gorilla dies, the zookeeper hires an actor
to don a costume and act like an ape until the zoo can
get another one.
In the cage, the actor makes faces, swings around, and
draws a huge crowd. He then crawls across a partition
and atop the lion’s cage, infuriating the animal.
But the actor stays in character—until he loses his grip
and falls into the lion’s cage.
Terrified, the actor shouts, “Help! Help me!” Too late.
The lion pounces, opens its massive jaws, and whispers,
“Shut up! Do you want to get us both fired?!”

CURRENT JANUARY 2022 THE WOODBRIDGE ADVERTISER PAGE SEVENTEEN
Muskoka‘s Ghost Towns
Most ghost town hunters seem to know the popular Muskoka ghost towns
like: Germania, Uffington, Falkenburg, Cooper's Falls and to a lesser
extent: Monsell and Lewisham. But there are others. Thanks to the book by
Hind and DaSilva, "Ghost Towns of Muskoka", these hamlets have been
brought back to memory. Here are some short bios on each..
ROSSEAU FALLS — Founded on the north shore of Lake Rosseau by Peter
Mutchenbacker, a pioneer from Germany, in 1877. At the mouth of the
Rousseau River he built a saw and shingle mill by harnessing the power of
the falls. Later he had a steam-operated outfit, which meant for a longer
cutting season. There were cabins built for the families and the mill workers.
Peter's home was first made of logs, but his second home was the centrepiece
of the hamlet where he opened a post office and store in 1880.
There were no roads and communication was done by a mail ship. The trees
were depleted by 1928 and the community went into decline. There are remnants
in the bay to this day of the mill. Take Hwy 141 to Rosseau Rd 3 and
drive south to the falls.
DEE BANK — Another short-lived pioneer crossroads milltown. John
Shannon bought land here in 1868 where the Dee River rushes into Three
Mile Lake. Here he built a grist mill. Due to its strategic location the community
grew to inlcude 2 hotels alongside the bush farms. It was the largest
village in Watt Township. The store and post office was run by John Barber;
there was a tannery, blacksmith, church, school and pop. of 75. It was hit
by two major blows- because it was inland the new steamships to
Windermere past it by and the railway bypassed it. Only the school
remains. Take Hwy 141 to Deebank Rd. and head south to the Dee River.
According to friend and fellow Ontario history buff, Gary Long, "Dee Bank
was just a small mill village with a few residences, a school, a store, and of
course the mills. I found a bit of the gristmill foundation on the south side
of the river at the bottom of the falls, and on the north side, the barely discernible
route of the road that formerly crossed a bridge at the top of the
falls and angled up the hillside. The authors of the book might have found
additional foundations, etc. I'm sure if you looked around hard enough in
the woods near the falls, you'd find other remains, though not necessarily
dating back as far as the original village.
Locations of towns weren't always logical in terms of terrain. Look at
Bracebridge and Huntsville, the original sections piled on hills when there
was plenty of flat land nearby. Usually the early growth took place closest to
the feature that resulted in the settlement being there. In the case of
Bracebridge and Dee Bank, that was the falls with its mills, and it's usually
rocky and hilly close to falls."
MILLAR HILL — Considered the high north country when nobody lived
this far north in Muskoka. Here David Millar decided to give bush farming
a whirl in the 1870s. As the trees were removed others joined the settlement
on the hardest terrain imaginable. Joseph Langmeade founded a school,
church and the post office (1912-1930). Fred Quinn built a sawmill on the
Boyne R. which brought a boost to the growing community, but later the
sawmill moved to Dwight and Millar Hill went into dire straits. Take Hwy.
60 to Millar Hill Rd. and drive to the end. Foundations can be found on the
observatory road before u get up to the summit where the radio towers are.
SELDOM SEEN — Founded in the 1870s in an isolated corner of Macaulay
Township, south of Fawn Lake, it didn't live long. It got its name as a joke,
meaning they were so far from civilization and the outside world. William
Dennis was the councillor and Alfred Lee was a farmer, teacher and assessor.
There was a store, small sawmill and school. In 1886 the township
moved the school miles away and the villagers were very upset. They rebuilt
another in its place to the dismay of the township. The school closed in
1912 as the villagers could no longer handle the conditions of their land.
BEATTY'S SIDING — 3 km. west of Swords on the famed Booth railway
was its location. Here, 20 plus trains per day passed by. The railway
housed rail workers here and a village formed with both farmers and loggers
in 1894. The Ludgate Lumber Co. was the main outfit. The children
went to school in Swords. Ludgate Co. moved out in 1910 and train traffic
dwindled, as did the town.
JERUSALEM — A true ghost town as it is hard to find even in the history
books. The short-lived hamlet was founded in 1866 by Thomas Peacock
deep in a forested valley on a north branch of the Muskoka River. As the
land was painstakingly cleared for crops, 8 buildings were erected; but it is
not known if they were part of a village or of a homestead or two. It was situated
between High Falls Rd., Hwy. 11 and Falkenburg Rd.
BEAR LAKE — Norwegians came to Canada by the 1000's. Some came to
Muskoka and settled at Bear Lake in the 1880's. They were offered free land
if they cleared it and worked at the lumber mills. They called their settlement
Jarlsberg, and it had a mill, school, store, post office, church and
blacksmith. By 1893 the name was changed to Bear Lake. Only their St.
Olaf's Church, pillars and 2 old buildings remain to this day. Take Hwy.
518 to Bear Lake, east of the Nipissing Colonization Rd.
HOODSTOWN —On the north shore of Lake Vernon a village formed that
was meant to be a major hub for Muskoka. Railways were being built
throughout the rugged terrain. Charles and Janet Hood had a vision and
bought a lot of land as a speculation that 2 major railway lines would one
day meet up at this spot where a small river joined Lake Vernon and Fox
Lake. They came from Toronto as they had heard of the boom in Muskoka.
Things looked promising in 1877, and by 1889 the Hoods had made a townplan
with 276 lots on 9 streets. There were 3 stores, 3 churches, a post
office, a sawmill, a hotel, a blacksmith and homes. But their speculation
never paid off as the railways bypassed the area. The post office shut down
in 1892 and the townsfolk moved to Hunstville.
EMBERSON — Was the most obscure ghost town of Muskoka during its
brief life. Even written accounts seem to be rumoured memories. But it did
exist. In 1876 on one of Brunel Township's windy, swampy, rocky, treeinfested
roads a community was formed. Henry Jarvis opened the post
office the same year. The children had to travel a distance to school in the
next township over. By 1900 there were 60 brave souls within its confines.
The bush farms and logging camps lasted until 1910 and its post office
until 1924. Stone foundations exist, though the area has long since been
swallowed up by the forest According to Hinds and Brown it lies 2 km.
north of Muskoka Rd. 11 and 2 km. east of Muskoka Rd. 7. But these directions
make no sense logically. I found an old map that shows Emberson
and it was located north of Britannia Rd (Cty Rd 10) and west of South
Portage Rd. (Cty Rd 9), which is now a huge forest. Got its post office in
1874. Emberson wasn't really even a village, just a rural post office serving
the farm families in that section. Never had a school or any businesses
other than farms. The section of road that went through Emberson hasn't
been open for many years, though you can still walk it or mountain bike it.
SOUTH PORTAGE — Is a semi-ghost town mentioned in one of Ron
Brown's books. Located on the north shore of Lake of Bays it once was
home to the shortest commercial railway line in the world, called the
Portage Railway. Its train, called "The Portage Flyer", ran less than 2 kms,
and ferried passengers between North Portage on Peninsula Lake and
South Portage in the early 1900's. It lasted until 1958.
NEWS From a Broad
By Tina Johanssen Dedels
Merry Christmas from the Beeton PetroCan Boys!
The list of things I love about my hometown is a long one, so I won’t even attempt to rattle
them all off. Instead, I’ll just name a couple of my faves. That my 92 year old mother, Hazel,
carries a note in her pocket that says ‘If I drop dead, please call Tina’, and people know who
to call. And that the ‘place to be’ in our town is the local PetroCan.
There is a jovial group of misfits that congregate there every morning, year round, in all
weather. Some good ole boys, some grumpy old men and some real characters. (My husband
Matt is one.) The numbers fluctuate — the comeraderie and conversation draw people
in. And the lads that work there are right in the mix. There’s a picnic table out front in summer,
for crokinole or just shooting the #&% for half an hour, or half the day. The addition
of a drive thru car wash brought a buzz of interest and a new form of entertainment.
Even on a biting cold February morning you’ll find them out there in a huddle, cradling their
coffees, telling stories or bitching about the Leafs. Every. Single. Morning.
I think these guys have become really tight buds. The coffee can’t be THAT great!
Rare and one-of-a-kind firearms
made by Canadian gunsmiths pre-Confederation
From straight-shooting collector, the late Don Bluth
A rifle by James Monroe “Gunsmith” Jones, Canada’s only known Black gunmaker of the period.
Shivers ran down the spine of auctioneer Justin Miller the first time he caressed the
satin smoothness of a rifle beautifully crafted by James Monroe “Gunsmith” Jones,
reputed to be the only Black gunsmith practicing in pre-Confederation Canada.
Superb craftsmanship, solid history and untold tales of the rifle combined to overwhelm
Justin, co-owner of Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. in New Hamburg, Ontario.
He and his brother and partner, Ethan, have handled the sale of thousands of pieces
over the years and felt similar thrills periodically. And yet, “Gunsmith Jones’ rifle is
something everyone should see,” Justin says.
“Perhaps a museum will purchase it. If the rifle goes to a private collector,
hopefully it will be shown to the public occasionally.”
The rifle was one of more than 75 pieces featured in the Firearms, Sporting &
Canadiana sale hosted by Miller & Miller Auctions on Sat., Oct. 9, 2021. Most of the
items were from the Don and Joyce Blyth Collection, along with other owners’ sporting
collectibles and choice additions.
The discerning Blyths took breaks from their Guelph-area farming operation to scour
estate sales, attics and barns for primitive items vital to early settlers. Don obtained
his first antique rifle as a schoolboy and became hooked for life. Respected as a shrewd
negotiator and Canadian-made firearms expert, he had a story for every piece in his
gun collection.
Three days before the 90-year-old collector died on April 6, 2021, Justin sat in Don’s
gun room for the last of many wonderful conversations. Spellbound by Don’s recollections,
the auctioneer filed away information to share later with bidders.
“Don mostly collected flintlock percussion rifles, marked CW for Canada West, prior
to 1866,” Justin notes. The auction items included a Hovsmovh rifle believed made by
an Indigenous gunsmith; a buggy gun by Dudley Booth of
Ottawa; a pistol marked Rorke Berlin; a four-barreled
shotgun by Michael Mater of Chippewa; and a rifle by
James Monroe “Gunsmith” Jones, Canada’s only known
Black gunmaker of the period.
James was one of a large family born to an enslaved man,
who paid a dishonest slaveowner twice for his family’s
freedom. The Joneses moved from the Carolinas to Ohio,
where four sons attended Oberlin College, the first such
institution to accept Black students. James graduated
with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1849, the fourth
African American to attain this achievement.
He relocated across the border to southwestern Ontario, marrying Howard Township
woman Emily Francis. In 1852, the couple joined free African Americans and escaped
slaves creating new lives in Chatham, an important terminal on the Underground
Railroad. In nearby Dresden, abolitionist, preacher and runaway slave Josiah Henson
was already living on his Dawn Settlement and gaining fame as the inspiration for
Harriet Beecher Stowe’s 1852 anti-slavery novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
Establishing a gunsmithing business, James became known as Gunsmith Jones, proving
his skill in making rifles and pocket-sized derringers. In those times, settlers
depended on their guns for hunting food and protection against attackers, both animal
and human.
Desiring the liberty of all enslaved people in the U.S., Gunsmith Jones listened intently
to John Brown when the abolitionist came to Chatham in 1858 to drum up support
for his radical plan: assemble an army of Blacks and anti-slavery sympathizers and take
over the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry in Virginia. Gunsmith Jones joined others in
taking an oath of secrecy and adopting and signing a constitution with the aim of freeing
4 million slaves.
Before John Brown left Chatham, he entrusted his firearm to Gunsmith Jones in
exchange for a $75 loan. The gunsmith wasn’t with John Brown and his small band in
1859 when they successfully held the armory for less than two days against the U.S.
Marines and militias. Captured, tried for treason and hanged, John Brown couldn’t
collect his pawned gun. The firearm is a treasured artefact displayed by the Chatham-
Kent Black Historical Society and Black Mecca Museum.
Grateful to Canada’s first Parliament, credited with passing the first antislavery law in
the British Empire in 1793, Gunsmith Jones produced an outstanding gift to bestow
upon the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, on his brief train stop in
Chatham in September 1860. While the prince waited in his royal coach for the scheduled
presentation of Gunsmith Jones’ duplicate pair of fine derringer pistols, local officials
squabbled over the appropriateness of a gift made by a Black person. They decided
it was not fitting and the prince departed without his present.
The Chatham Tri-Weekly Planet newspaper reported soon afterward that a derringer
pair by Gunsmith Jones won a medal at the Montreal Manufacturing and Trade Fair.
The Chatham man was “one of six Canadian gunsmiths who had the skill.…to be compared
with the best in the world,” according to James Gooding, publisher of the
Canadian Journal of Arms Collecting launched in the 1960s.
“The publisher also complimented Don Blyth as the dean of Canadian gun collectors,”
Justin says. “We are selling Don’s copy of the Canadian Gunsmith 1608-1900,
authored by James Gooding and inscribed: For Don Blyth, a student, collector and
darned good friend.”
