Shrimp, 19??
Published in Los Angeles, Shrimp is a one-shot off-shoot of Vaginal Davis’ previous
zine Fertile LaToyah Jackson. In her editorial for the zine, Vaginal asks, “If
everyone had a nice hefty foot in their mouth all the problems in the world would
be solved, right?” The title ‘Shrimp’, as the editorial explains, refers to a sexual act
in which “the licking and sucking of feet is not only encouraged BUT celebrated.
Boy feet/girl feet...to shrimp is to love”.
Aside from shrimping, many other topics are covered in the zine. Photo essays of
subjects such as The Goddess Bunny; the making of John Aes-Nihil’s film The
Drift; “Spew”, the Zine Convergence in Chicago; Hollywood Parties; Pedro Muriel
and Esther, or PME, Vaginal’s band with Glen Meadmore; bondage photographs
by Rick Castro; artist G.B. Jones; and the group Psychodrama.
Glenn Danzig of the Misfits is interviewed by Ms. Davis. He quickly begins to
irritate Vaginal who suggests, “You don’t want to get on a 6’ 6” black drag queen’s
raw opened nerve, because honey I didn’t just fall off the turnip truck.” Glenn admits
that he can see that. Ms. Davis also interviews Fugazi and this interview goes
better. Ian MacKaye tells Vaginal, “You’re my fantasy love goddess” to which
Vaginal replies, “This interview is getting off the track”. Excerpts from these two
interviews from Shrimp were featured in Outpunk # 6, a special compilation issue
of notable zines chosen by the editor, Matt Wobensmith.
Shrimp was published in the mid 1990’s. As the editorial states, “If anything in the
contents of this publication offends, be noted that this publication is produced by
a young militant african american drag queen who not only welcomes confrontation
but encourages it, so if you are so inclined to challenge a 6’ 6” ghetto warrior
raised in the projects of Watts, California, by all means make yourself known to
her”.

That Fertile Feeling (1982)
Directed by Vaginal Davis
8 minutes 28 seconds
Fertile LaToyah Jackson is always having babies! In a race
against time and set to a disco soundtrack, Jackson and Vaginal
Davis rush to the hospital to deliver that baby. After being
turned away for not having health insurance, the two dash to
New Boyfriend’s house, where Jackson delivers one baby after
another. For the denouement, Fertile LaToyah Jackson hits the
asphalt and skates carefree through a parking lot.

In an homage to Noel Coward and Jean-Luc Godard, three
friends sit on a bed in a sunny room, filmed in low saturated
black and white, talking about everything and anything. “No
one else is into punk rock anymore,” says Chops as he strums
on a guitar. “Just because I eat your pussy doesn’t mean I’m a
lesbian,” laughs Vaginal Davis. The black and white scene is
interrupted by abrupt switches to color vignettes prefaced by
the title fantasia expectorant. Other characters join to perform
brief role-plays before the film switches back to black and
white. The conversation unfolds like a distracting dream, jumping
back and forth between narratives.

with live footage of the Cholita! Features Alice Bag, Fertile
La Toyah Jackson, and Vaginal Davis. Directed by three-time
Emmy Award winner Michelle Mills, short clips of ¡Cholita!,
known as the female Menudo, show crowds of debaucherous
fans and friends, outrageous outfits, synchronized dance
moves, and scenes overflowing with joy. Across several live
gigs, the band performs “Chinga Tu Madre,” “I’m not a puta,
I’m a princess,” and their self-proclaimed anthem “Beans are

Filmed between 1994 and 1998, it is strange how this short
subject pastiche seems even more timely. The film features
music from the Pedro, Muriel & Esther (PME) concept album,
also titled The White to be Angry, recorded in Chicago
by moody sound producer Steve Albini (Nirvana, PJ Harvey).
PME is the positive punk metal thrash art/music project of Ms.
Davis and fellow glamazon Glen Meadmore. Taking inspiration
from Pier Paolo Passolini’s short films, the elongated
anti-music video: The White to be Angry features three consecutive
vignettes. The camera follows a white supremacist
family and their skinhead son who flips through TV channels
in his confederate-flag-clad room, eventually landing on the
PME bop,”Riche Jewish Husband” inspired by Woody Allen’s
serious film Interiors. Another vignette features a Moors Murder-Esque
couple who commit hate crimes, tricking, seducing,
then killing a variety of queer individuals going about their
days. In the final scene, the skinhead son and his buddy get
cozy on the couch, proving that sexuality is complicated. Fun
tidbits: the house featured was also the home of Clint Eastwood
in the late 1950s at the beginning of his career; in the 1940s,
the house was the abortion clinic of the stars, and Bibbe Hansen
(musician Beck’s Mom) plays a rendition of Geraldine
Page’s role in Allen’s Interiors in Ms. Davis’ “Riche Jewish
Husband.”

Documentation of the last Club Sucker, Davis’ Sunday afternoon
music event (1994-1999). While the band Rizzo warms
up on stage, a single spotlight follows Davis through the crowd
as she dances her way to the stage to host the night’s event.
“I’m not sentimental,” Davis says into a microphone. “Yes, you
are!” says someone off-screen. Davis wanders outside to chat
with guests, make friends, and recount all the memories made
at Club Sucker.

says Vaginal Davis, among friends and kids who hold up title

Marc Siegal about the titular “Gran’pa Sam” Siegal. The two
shuffle through old black and white photographs of Gran’pa
Sam at glamorous parties with famous socialites like Andy
Warhol and Jimmy Stewart. In a third installment, Davis gives
loose direction to the actors as they improvise the next sex
scene: another threesome that ends in betrayal while lounge
music plays in the background.

Vaginal Davis launched her groundbreaking publication,
Fertile La Toyah Jackson, a bursting photocopied
zine in the late 1980s. The zines brimmed with local art
and music factoids, styling and photos by Beulah Love
(a pseudonym for Rick Castro, a collaborative partner),
and pieces of celebrity gossip. It quickly established
the queercore music scene by detailing Davis’ musical
projects and influence on the music scene. In 1991,
Davis teamed up with Castro to produce two VHS volumes
of the zine, which captured both the zeal behind
the zines while documenting Los Angeles in transition.

Three Faces of Women, 1991-1993
Colour video converted to digital
1 hour 26 minutes
Directed by Vaginal Davis
A melodrama is featuring three women as they navigate the Didion-Esque minutia
of their lives and age. Part 1: The Seduction of Lilith follows an explorative night
for a new divorcee and Mary Kay agent Lilith who meets a lonely Ph.D. student
who’s doing field research on divorced women. Over margaritas, she interviews
Lilith throughout the night, offering TERF-adjacent takes on womanhood and sex,
then ends the night by taking advantage of Lilith in an elevator. Part 2: Who Cares
About Elizabeth Wolff? A woman mourning her youth takes her discontent to the
dive bar, where she spars with various guests about the state of gender and privilege.
She corners a leather daddy and ruins Marie Antoinette’s wedding night with her
sour grapes cynicism. In Part 3: Dr. Christeen, Sexual Surrogate, a leggy couple
discusses their relationship in a chic New York apartment. Tensions rise throughout
the evening as they chat over Freud, lesbian bed death, and what to drink next. A
microaggressive mediator visits the apartment and attempts to therapize the couple
through explorative sex.

Tom Cruise Loves Women (2000)
Directed by Vaginal Davis and Billy Miller of Straight to Hell Magazine

19 minutes 2 seconds
A hunky homoerotic montage of Tom Cruise—who loves women—is spliced
with footage from various movies with a particular focus on Cruise’s butt.
Davis collages beards onto the women Cruise poses next to on the covers of
magazines; a tabloid headline reveals that Vaginal Davis leaked a scandalous
secret in a tell-all.
de Rohan Chabot series, 2008
digital video
14 min, 53 sec
Directed by Vaginal Davis
A filmic portrait of Vaginal Davis’s student Christophe de Rohan Chabot,
Davis taught in a performance art seminar at Weissensee Art Academy in
Berlin. The film opens with an extreme close-up of a blue eye, zooming out to
reveal the face of a young man with short blond hair sitting in front of a wall
plastered with magazine clippings of models and celebrities interspersed with
snapshots and text. Spacey synthesizer sounds mix with a hypnotic drum beat
and gets progressively louder before the scene abruptly ends. What follows
is a collection of short scenes featuring the same man singing, explaining
drawings in a notebook, and recounting a story, all in French.
Behind the scenes footage of homemade feature film The Lollipop Generation,
which took Canadian filmmaker and artist G.B. Jones, thirteen years to make,
released the final cut in 2011. Features footage of actors getting costumed in long
sleeve button-downs and oversized but still boyish trousers then shooting an
impetuous threesome bedroom scene.
Memory Island (2009)
Directed by Vaginal Davis
Digital 24 minutes 44 seconds
Edition of 6 + 2 AP
Commissioned by Live Film! Jack Smith! Five Flaming Days in a rented world
Curated Curated by Susanne Sachsse, Marc Siegel, and Stefanie Schulte Strathaus
“I am beauty, beauty I am,” booms the echoing voiceover as a well-appointed man
in feathers and jewels takes center state, later framed by two pairs of feet around his
face like an aura. Two other men join him, draped in gauzy fabrics with the image
of a tropical beach at low tide projected across their bodies. These exotic creatures
alternate from tableau to tableau in glittering gems, sequins, and soft leopard prints
with rhinestones that twinkle across the screen while a tropical soundtrack warbles
in the background. A beachy, moody Vogue moment.
Dot (1992)

Written and Directed by Vaginal Davis
Cinematography, Camera & Editing by Mari Kano
In Dot, Vaginal Davis takes bad acting to new depths, channeling the acerbic wit
and alcoholic-isms of the poet and provocateur, Dorothy Parker. Something rare
is revealed in this film project—vulnerability—as she cannot hide her attraction
to her co-star Alfredo Botello who plays Mr. Robert Benchley—filmed in Davis’
streamlined moderne flat and studio in pre-gentrification Los Angeles’s Koreatown
neighborhood, also known as the Cheese Endique Trifecta. Designy Living, VooDoo
Williamson—The Dona of Dance and The White to be Angry were also filmed in this
location.
One Man Ladies (1996)
Vaginal Davis and Glenn Belverio
28 minutes, 58 seconds
Dr. Vaginal Davis co-hosts with Glenn Belverio of Glennda and Friends
streetside in Manhattan. They discuss Dr. Laura Schlessinger’s latest book,
“The Ten Stupid Things Women Do to Mess Up Their Lives,” catching live
interviews with women walking around Manhattan. “Psychotherapy through
mass media, that’s the way to do therapy in the ‘90s; it’s non-elitist,” said
Glennda. They speak with three different straight women in various stages of
committed relationships. Each conversation is entirely pleasant and focused
on marriage as the ultimate romantic goal. “Third finger left hand!”they chant
as they introduce the concept of Neo-Conservative Chic while invoking 90s
talk radio hostess Dr. Laura Schlessinger, Joan Crawford, Suzy Parker, Phil
Donahue, Leni Riefenstahl, and others. Glenn Belverio is now the influential
director of MoMa’s Design Store and a fashion commentator for A Shaded
View on Fashion.
VooDoo Williamson—The Doña of Dance (1994/5)
17 minutes, 42 seconds
Written and Directed by Vaginal Davis
Edited by Lawrence Elbert
VooDoo Williamson—The Doña of Dance follows the life and times of
flamboyant choreographer VooDoo Williamson and her dance studio. She
inspires young ingenues through their struggles on stage and off. As VooDoo,
Ms. Davis plays a charismatic and deluded Caribbean doyenne/choreographer
and director of the Extemporaneous / Contemporary Inner City Dance
Theatre of Lynwood, helping troubled urban youth through a celebration of
the joys of modern barefoot dance. A Johnny-One-Note joke was taken to
its extreme, spoofing films such as Fame and Shirley MacLaine in Madame
Sousatzka. “Dance is the key to World Peace,” says one young student. Each
student’s challenges reveal the wisdom and principles behind Williamson’s
philosophy of The Dance. The film ends with a freestyle dance sequence.
