Nelson Museum of the West & Manitou Galleries - Season Sponsor
Robert L. “Bob” Nelson, founder of the Nelson Museum of the West, is a Wyoming native. Born in Cheyenne
in 1941, Mr. Nelson has been, and continues to be, an avid collector of all things Western. His maternal
grandparents were homesteaders near Newcastle, Wyoming and from this humble beginning, a Western
icon was born. Featured in numerous articles, including having been named as a “Legend of the West” in
the acclaimed “Persimmon Hill” publication, Mr. Nelson has built a collection to honorably and accurately
“Preserve The Past For The Future”.
The dream of The Nelson Museum was born on the plains of Africa, the outback of Australia, the bleakness
of Siberia and the rugged mountains of Spain and is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of the
world’s wildlife and the Old West. Taxidermy displays of wildlife from every continent, a world-class Military
exhibit from the Civil War to WW II, fine Western art, a 3,500+ volume library, Cowboy and Native American
collectibles, outlaw/lawmen history and special exhibits of Sheriff George Carroll’s “office” and artist Burt
Proctor’s studio are highlights. The Museum, opened in 1998, has since earned a “gem attraction” rating with
AAA Travel.

Manitou Galleries was established in 1975 in downtown Cheyenne as a sideline to Bob’s successful law
practice. The gallery has now expanded to three locations, one in Cheyenne and two in Santa Fe, NM, which
also now both include jewelry stores- “Palace Jewelers at Manitou”. www.manitougalleries.com
Manitou Galleries features fine art and sculpture and is also home for the production of two major auctions,
held annually in March and August. www.marchinmontana.com and www.auctioninsantafe.com. Bob and his
wife, Charla, have 4 children and 9 grandchildren. They dedicate their time and passion to their families, the
2 fine arts and their businesses.
