From Pigtails to Power Agents
It started with fingerpainting. Then
sleepovers. Then carpooling to college.
Two girls who started as friends on
the playground grew into two women
who formed a power team in the real
world. The real estate world that is.
Emily Strain and Heather Pabotoy
were born and raised in the Keys,
experiencing childhood like so few
get to. How many kids get to grow
up barefoot on the beach? Or sail to
the Bahamas on summer breaks? Not
many.
Being one of the few true “conchs”
has given Emily and Heather a deeprooted
appreciation of the Keys and the
lifestyle it offers. It’s given them a unique
perspective and insider knowledge of
the area. Not only because they study
the market, but because they have
experienced the lifestyle firsthand over
the past 36 years.
In their youth, the girls would swim
at the Quay and under the Old Bridge
to Nowhere, fish, go shrimping, and do
simple things like camp in Heather’s
grandparents’ yard. The daughter of a
boat captain, Emily’s school bus would
often drop her off at the docks after
school. They both spent countless
days sailing and trolling the seas.
Those experiences incited a passion
for helping others put down their own
roots and make the Keys their home,
whether it’s a vacation property or a
permanent home. They also have a
particular desire to help locals navigate
the market that so often caters to highpaying
vacationers.
“It can be very difficult for locals to
find affordable housing in the Keys,”
Heather explains. “It’s so important
for our community to keep the people
that work here living here. Emily and
I take the most pride in helping local
families do just that.”
In addition to helping local buyers
find affordable housing, Heather and
Emily specialize in selling residential
real estate.
“Heather and I find it particularly
rewarding to help our clients with,
what is for many people, one of their
biggest investments in their lifetime,”
Emily says. “We take pride in knowing
that the service we offer our clients is
a valuable one.”
Last year, on average, Heather and
Emily earned their clients $20,000
more than their competitors. They
were able to accomplish this by selling
their properties for 99% of the listing
price while the average agent was only

Teaching Kindness to Kids
Every good parent strives to teach
their children the cornerstones of
a healthy and happy life. Lessons
about personal care, responsibility,
and achievement. Lessons about
compassion, love, and kindness.
Lessons that will guide them around
life’s obstacles and through its trials.
Though lessons of the heart are
the most important, they’re often
the hardest to teach. While we have
chore lists to teach responsibility
and school curriculums to encourage
achievement, what do we have to
teach and promote kindness?
That’s exactly the question God put on
the hearts of Mikey and Elaine Hampson.
Mikey and Elaine went to high school
together, but they didn’t cross paths
until years later at a store. One thing
led to another, and they were soon
married with two young boys. Mikey
and Elaine originally came from very
different backgrounds, with Mikey
being second-generation Conch and
Elaine immigrating from Cuba.
Yet, however different their pasts,
they knew the future they wanted to
build for their family. One based on faith,
compassion, and giving that improves
their kids’ lives as well as those around
them. With that in mind and with God’s
guidance, Mikey and Elaine created a
system that encourages kids to practice
acts of kindness, called Dollars of Love.
Mikey has served as a mentor
for many years, including with the
Firefighter Explorer program. While
trying to instill positive behaviors in
teens, he realized how easily we
place value on practical actions
kids take, like mowing lawns
and babysitting. Yet, the most
valuable contributions to
society we can make stem
from acts of love.
“If a kid mows a lawn for
$5, the action is worth $5,”
Mikey explains. “But if a kid
mows his elderly neighbor’s
lawn for free, that is worth so
much more than $5. That’s
the mindset we’re trying to
instill in our kids and to help
other parents who want to do
the same.”
Mikey and Elaine model kindness
for their kids in their everyday lives,
understanding that kids learn from
watching as much as doing. But they
also wanted a more direct way to teach
the value of kindness. That is how
Dollars of Love came to be.
Dollars of Love is a currency
available to all walks of life, regardless
of socioeconomic status. It is earned
through performing good deeds
and actions of love. Mikey and Elaine
published an interactive children’s
book and workbook to help introduce
this “when we give, we receive” concept
to younger children.
The children’s story is based on
Elaine’s real-life
experience growing up in extreme
poverty in Cuba. As a child, her family
couldn’t even afford to buy her an
ice cream cone. She remembers her
grandmother would cry because she
could not provide such a simple treat
to those she loved the most. Then, one
day, the kindness of a stranger made a
lasting impact on Elaine and wiped the
tears from her grandmother’s eyes.
That kindness came in the form of an
ice cream cone.
Elaine will never forget the taste of
that frozen gift, but, more so, she’ll never
forget the love behind it. She’ll never
forget that the simple act of giving and
receiving goes far beyond any tangible
thing. It is that same message the Dollars
of Love book delivers.
The Dollars of Love book comes with
cut-out dollars that kids receive when
they perform good deeds. At the end of
the day, they reflect upon each Dollar
they earned and write on the back how it
made them feel. At the end of the week,
they can turn their Dollars of Love in for
a prize.
Parents can also take it one step further

Jane Wasmund
Jane wanted to give back to her community and 22 years ago she
decided that she could do this at Christmas time by adopting kids
and their families from the area to help who otherwise would
not have a Christmas or presents. She contacted the local
Postmaster as well as several church pastors and teachers
and asked the question -“Who can we help that needs us at
Christmas?” Requests came in, and specific gifts were asked
for by the kids and those requests were then fulfilled. That
began her yearly promise to help families in our community.
Four years ago Jane and her helpers started the Lighted Bike
Parade- an instant hit and event for families to decorate their
bikes, and come ride at night up the bike path. Donations are
given for the ride, and there is also an on line auction on facebook
the week before. Local business owners donate amazing gifts for the
auction -they are bid on - and the monies raised from the ride and auction
then go to help buy the gifts for the families and kids in our community.
None of this is accomplished alone. As Jane says -It takes a village-and
our Keys commuinty is an amazing village of caring and compasionate
folks. Whenever you can keep the magic alive for a child and a family at
Christmas it is a humbling experience.
She became a realtor when she moved to
the Keys. Her passion for real estate can be
traced back to when she was working for
a real estate company as their secretary,
and realized that she wanted to be
an agent. She loved her career as an
agent and quickly became a broker
and purchased a franchise company
that she had for 10 years. She and her
daughter now own Tropical Realty. She
often tells of her first year in the business.
She said there were so many “deals” to buy,
and she would take her husband Jerry around
in the evening to look at all the great buys in the
Keys!! In her free time Jane loves to read, and she and her
husband Jerry also love to go on cruises and travel.

With construction in her blood and design in her heart,
Real Estate Agent Kelsey Caputo has expanded her
business portfolio to include interior design. Tight Lines
Interior Design offers full design services from floor plan
renderings to furniture plans and concepts to selections.
Kelsey was born and raised in the Keys to a long line
of contractors. Her grandfather was the first marine
contractor in the area, building roads, and her parents
own an electrical contracting business. Her parents also
have a lot of experience in real estate, flipping dozens of
houses throughout Kelsey’s childhood.
At only 18 years old, Kelsey got her real estate license
and at 21, her general contractor’s license. At first, the
licenses were more for helping her parents with their
flips, but they evolved into a thriving real estate business
and now into a full-service design company.
“Tight Lines focuses on interior design, but if we need
to knock down walls to achieve the best design, I’m
fully capable of making that happen as a G.C.,” Kelsey
explains. “I grew up laying tile, painting, and using tools,
so I know what it takes to get the job done, and I have the
connections to do it.”
Even though she is only in her early twenties, Kelsey is
no stranger to professional success. As mentioned, she is
a well-known real estate agent in the Keys, but that’s not
all the young entrepreneur has accomplished.
At 18 years old, around the same time she earned her
real estate license, Kelsey also launched a luxury swimwear
line. Kadan Swimwear is
a recognizable brand in
the Keys that has national
clientele. Kelsey recently
hired a sales manager to help
run operations as she focuses
on Tight Lines Interior Design.
At first, she saw real estate
and design as two different
parts of herself. But as time
passed, she realized she
could meld the two worlds
together. Tight Lines is the
perfect convergence of who
Kelsey is and what she excels
at, bringing her creative and
constructive sides together.
“Swimwear was my first
creative outlet, and I really
enjoy it, but I have discovered
my real passion is interior
design,” Kelsey says and adds
with a laugh, “I went from
being an annoyed kid on my
parents’ job sites to wanting
to manage my own. It’s funny
how we follow our parents’
footsteps but in our own way.”
Kelsey is close to her family
and her boyfriend, spending
a lot of time fishing, traveling,
or just lounging on the boat
together. Growing up in
the Keys has undoubtedly
given her a unique design
perspective. She has a very
coastal modern design
aesthetic, specializing in
creating relaxed spaces with
a vacation feel. However, she
serves a range of customers
and styles, making each design
entirely unique to the client.
“I love finding unique items
that speak specifically to a
client, things that nobody
else has,” Kelsey shares. She
gets to know her clients well
to cater to their personalities
and lifestyle and loves
unexpected challenges.

Kids learn how to save their Dollars to
purchase bigger rewards instead of
opting for the instant gratification of a
smaller prize.
In the beginning, the prizes kids
purchase with their Dollars of Love
reinforce their positive behavior, but as
the weeks progress, the children realize
that the loving action itself makes them
feel better than any prize they receive.
This creates a pathway where it becomes
second nature for the child to perform a
good deed.
Kindness becomes a part of who
they are.
The Dollars of Love Workbook
supplements the book by providing
ideas and space for the reader to
illustrate and plan how they will perform
their next good deed. The good deeds
don’t have to be grand gestures. In fact,
they’re not expected to be. The goal is to
show kids that even the smallest acts of
kindness can make a big difference.
“Adults mistakenly think we need
more time or money to help others,”
Elaine says,
“but we just need to integrate
small acts of love into our
day. It can be as simple as
smiling at a stranger that
looks sad or helping someone
load their groceries...
Those small actions are worthy of
Dollars of Love because they are about
recognizing others’ needs, not just our
own.”
Mikey gives another great example
of picking up trash at the beach as
a family and then spending the rest
of the afternoon playing in the sand.
Dollars of Love is about kindness
fitting into your daily activities, rather
than feeling you have to go out of
your way.
Mikey and Elaine take a humble
position on their Dollars for Love
concept. They don’t think it’s a
“better” way to parent but believe it
can help parents lay a foundation of
love and kindness early on in a child’s
life. It’s meant as another tool in the
parenting toolbox.
“Kids have plenty of time when
they’re older to learn about work
and making money,” Mikey says.
“In children’s formidable years,
we believe it’s more valuable
to lay a foundation of love
and kindness because,
with that foundation,
success will follow.
When kids are more
aware of others and
what’s going on
around them, they
will naturally become
better leaders,
team members, and
problem-solvers.”
Dollars of Love is
not just for young
children, however.
Though the book and
workbook are geared
to a young audience,
the Dollars of Love
community is for all
ages.
In fact, the Dollars of Love community
works hand-in-hand with the 501c3
non-profit organization Mikey and
Elaine just established, called Every
Child is a Superhero. A portion of
all book sales goes to support the
organization.
Every Child is a Superhero is on a
mission to help every child “unlock
their God-given gifts and superhero
abilities.” The newly-founded nonprofit
uses Dollars of Love to mentor
children and will help support them
in practical ways based on their age,
such as trading in Dollars of Love for
scholarships.
As both the founders of Every
Child is a Superhero and creators
of Dollars of Love, Mikey and Elaine
are unlocking their God-given gifts
and superhero abilities. They are
answering the calling God put on
their hearts to make this difference in
children’s lives and, ultimately, in the
world they grow up in.
“God has guided us every step of the
way in this process and showed us what
Love is all about,” Mikey says, adding
that without God, he and his family
would have nothing. “Our mission is to
create a movement focused on loving
others and seeking out opportunities,
big and small, to make the whole world
beautiful.”
‘The Whole World is Beautiful’ is the
slogan for Dollars of Love. It represents
how beauty can be found wherever
love and kindness reside.

FOR A Good Cause
After another record-smashing year despite the pandemic, the Island
Boat Show is back for its 7th annual fundraising event.
It’s hitting land and shores at Hawks Cay Marina January 21st - 23rd for
a weekend full of family fun.
Presented by Golden Boat Lifts &
Marine Systems, visitors can get up
close and personal with the best
boating products and models on the
market. Nearly every boat dealer
in the Keys showcases their most
popular boats, from fishing skiffs
to large center-console boats and
everything in between.
The boats will be on display on
the water and the shore, welcoming
visitors on board. Sea trials may also
be arranged for serious buyers.
Last year during the pandemic,
the large outdoor event served as
the perfect opportunity for people
to escape their houses and enjoy a
safe, open environment. With new
safety measures in place, the event
was the most successful one to date,
and they hope to say the same about
this year’s boat show.
The 2021 Island Boat Show raised
enough money to support several
worthy causes through Island
Community Church, which organizes
the event every year. $50,000 worth
of scholarships were awarded based
on merit and need to 47 Upper and
Middle Keys college students.
The church also prepped, prepared,
and delivered over 800 Thanksgiving
meals to local families in need.
Every penny of the remaining funds
goes to helping others, including
sending a team led by Pastor Tony
Hammon to Uganda to teach and
provide education curriculums in
impoverished communities.
What appears to be a local boat
show is really a starting line for local
and international mission fields.
This year’s event will still boast
15 boat dealers, over 30 brands
of boats, and more than 80 boats
despite the backlogged inventories
customers have been facing. Dozens
of exhibitors will also be offering
boat and water-loving products on
land, including boat lifts, dock lights,
boat security systems, clothing, dive
equipment, boat detailing services,
and more.
The entry fee is only $10 per
person, and one ticket is good for
the entire 3-day event. All persons
under the age of 18 are free! Ample
free parking and a shuttle service
are also available at no charge.
Raffle tickets will be on sale for
only $5 a ticket. This year’s raffle
prize is a high-end cooler jammed
pack with fishing tackle, hats, shirts,
and other goodies.
The Silent Auction is also a huge
draw for the crowds. Auction items
include merchandise from local
businesses, fishing charters, a
weekend getaway at Hawks Cay
Resort, and more great donated
items. Visitors can grab a bite to eat
at the Angler and Ale Restaurant in
the marina.
“Every year, we’re blessed with
good weather and good fun,” Glenn
Latham, one of the event organizers,
says. “Our team works very hard
all year long, and we are never
disappointed with the results.”
The Island Boat Show has grown
in popularity so much that Island
Community Church brought on
Professional Event Coordinator
Olivia Hammon for last year’s event.
As expected, she excelled at her
job with the help of the church’s
event committee and over 70 event
volunteers. They’re well on track to
do the same this year.

2 Zucchini
1 Eggplant
8oz Mushroom
1 Pepper
1 Onion
Olive Oil
Salt & Pepper
4oz Goat Cheese
1/3 cup Pesto
Prep Time: 10 Minutes
Cook Time: 15 Minutes
Directions:
Cut peppers & onions length wise. Cut the eggplant into
1/4" - 1/2" width circles. Slice mushrooms. Toss all four
vegetables in olive oil & sprinkle with salt & pepper.
Heat up the BBQ grill and then place the veggies on the
grill. Roast for 7-8 min on each side or untill blackened
to your preference.
Take off the grill. Let them cool down then toss with
pesto & goat cheese in a bowl.
Servce them as a side salad or skewer them for easy
hand outs!
