Meeting on establishing
tea auction center held
in rangpur
rangpur: a views-sharing meeting on
setting up a third tea auction center in
panchagarh was held at the conference room of
the divisional Commissioner in the city on
Monday afternoon, reports Bss.
Bangladesh tea Board (BtB) organized the
meeting, a press release said yesterday.
Chairman of BtB Major general Md.
ashraful islam, ndc, psc, attended the meeting
as the chief guest with rangpur divisional
Commissioner Md. abdul Wahhab Bhuiyan in
the chair.
BtB Member (Finance and trade) and joint
secretary dr. nazneen kawsar Chowdhury
delivered the welcome address at the meeting.
deputy Commissioners of rangpur,
panchagarh, Lalmonirhat and thakurgaon
districts in the tea growing northern region,
BtB officials, stakeholders of the tea industry,
representatives of different chambers and
Bangladesh small tea garden owners'
association, small tea farmers participated in
the event.
addressing the meeting, the BtB Chairman
highlighted the issue of setting up a new tea
auction center in the northern region.
For this, he put emphasis on forming an
association consisting of local tea traders and
stakeholders soon to set up a tea auction center
in the northern region.
Members of the new association will gain
practical experience in this regard by visiting
Chittagong and srimangal tea auction centers.
"the next decision will be taken after
convening a meeting with the participation of
all concerned and discussing the issue for
setting up a tea auction center in the northern
region," he said.
the release noted that tea produced in tea
factories of the northern region is currently
being sold at Chittagong and srimangal tea
auction centers.
due to the distance, the quality of tea
produced in tea factories of the northern region
and its price at these auction centers is
declining and the factories have to bear the
relatively high transportation cost.
"due to this problem, the continuous success
and huge prospect in the boosting tea industry
of the northern region is being challenged. as a
result, there is a need to set up a tea auction
center in north Bengal," the release added.
