Providing Access to Exceptional At-Home Care

Towards Familiar

Homes and Communities

t goes without saying that when people get older, they

Imay experience health complications that limit their

ability to be self-sufficient. Because many caregivers

can’t personally provide all of the care their loved ones

need, most seniors eventually use the services of one or

more home care providers.

While seniors most commonly hire a private-duty or

professional caregiver for help with personal care tasks,

some use the services of nursing assistants, home health

aides, and homemakers as well.

Hiring a home care provider reduces stress, keeps one’s

family members from being overworked, and helps elderly

adults maintain a higher quality of life. Moreover, home

care providers help relieve family members that are often

the caregivers of their ageing parents.

With an ageing population and an increase in the prevalence

of chronic conditions, the home health care medical

equipment market is anticipated to see massive growth over

the forecast period.

The home health care medical equipment market is mainly

driven by factors such as increasing hospital readmissions

rates, rising patient awareness regarding the benefits of

outpatient surgeries as well as higher adoption of

technologically advanced medical equipment.

In addition, increasing approval from regulatory bodies for

reimbursement of home medical devices across various

countries is another significant factor fueling the growth of

the home health care medical equipment market.

market. Majorly, the growing prevalence of chronic health

conditions, the rise in the spending capacity of patients, the

integrated care for patients through a single source, and

technological advancements in home medical equipment

are key factors driving the acute home medical equipment

demand.

As people today prefer receiving treatment from the

comfort of their homes rather than visiting a hospital, home

medical equipment treatment has gained popularity among

patients-oriented treatments.

The number of seniors is multiplying. And, as people live

longer and independently, they need help to maintain that

level of independence. The need for in-home care has never

been greater than it is today. The demand for such services

as home health aides and home care nurses will continue to

rise as well.

Hence, Insights Care has come up with 10 Most Trusted

Home Care Providers 2021. These are the top trusted home

care agencies of 2021 as rated by seniors and their families.

HOME CARE

Providers 2021

LANE KOFOED

CEO

The ongoing COVID-19

pandemic has become a

testament to the undeniable

need for quality and comprehensive

healthcare. In these challenging times,

the fear of contracting the virus

overpowered the desire to access inperson

healthcare services – creating

barriers to deliver quality care.

These barriers carry a heightened

concern for those unable to access

healthcare services either involuntarily

or due to unavoidable limitations.

Addressing these and devising

innovative solutions has become

essential to healthcare service

providers and organizations.

The 10 Most Trusted Home Care

Providers, 2021, brings a spotlight to

those organizations that strove

ceaselessly to deliver holistic

healthcare services and solutions to

®

their customers. Assisting Hands

Home Care stands out due to its

ability to provide expert in-home care

to large populations, including the

elderly, disabled, and others in need of

assistance with daily activities in the

comfort and security of their own

home.

Assisting Hands is a franchise that

emphasizes exceptional customer

service and customized in-home care

to their clients—founded by Dr. Gail

Silverstein, who has more than 25

years of experience coordinating and

leading health care programs in both

the public and private sector, and Cline

Waddell of Boise, Idaho. Their vision

of providing a better alternative for the

elderly, disabled, and others needing

assistance at home has grown over the

years to a highly recognized and

growing home care company.

Personifying Excellence

Co-founder Cline Waddell understood

that they needed someone to help them

lead the company into the future. Lane

Kofoed came to mind immediately.

Cline had personal knowledge and

experience with Lane and believed in

his integrity. Gail Silverstein agreed

that Lane was necessary and felt

confident that he would continue their

vision to grow into a high-quality

home care provider with franchising

opportunities.

In 2009 Lane started as COO with the

knowledge that once he proved

himself, he would take on the role of

CEO. He immediately set out to reach

the goals established by increasing the

organization’s number of units and

profitability and became CEO in 2011.

Under Lane’s leadership, the first

franchisee meeting included a day at

his family’s ranch. Franchisees enjoyed

dinner with Lane and his family along

with team-building exercises that

included white water rafting. His

leadership style quickly developed into

a culture that united the entire

company as a family that has been

affectionately nicknamed the Family of

Franchise Owners (FOFO).

When asked how Assisting Hands

managed to stay consistently

competitive during the initial phase of

the pandemic, Lane replied, “During a

difficult and unpredictable year,

Assisting Hands proved itself to be

‘recession-resistant.’ While the

pandemic required changes in day-today

operation, there was an increased

demand and need for in-home care. We

experienced tremendous growth in

2020 to meet this demand, adding 14

franchises for a total of 162 franchise

territories, 16 area developments, 72

offices around the county, and new

franchise owners in 5 states.”

Speaking about how he and his team at

Assisting Hands cultivate a successful

relationship with franchisees, Lane

expressed, “We look for new franchise

prospects who have the heart for the

business and then build a trusting

relationship with them. We treat them

as business partners, grow with them,

and celebrate their successes.”

Assisting Hands believes in providing

a level of professional and dependable

care to clients that sets it apart from the

competition. Client satisfaction is of

the utmost importance; therefore,

caregivers are carefully chosen and

trained above-and-beyond state

requirements. Assisting Hands’

caregivers possess the knowledge and

attitude needed to be exceptional,

compassionate, and dependable home

care providers.

Building a Great Brand

When discussing the opportunities

franchisees receive when they join

Assisting Hands, Lane states,

“Candidates have an opportunity to

join a family-friendly system with a

low-cost, high-return, proven business

model in an explosive-growth industry

which provides a much-needed service

to an often-overlooked segment of our

communities.”

Candidates must possess people

management skills, compassion, and a

heart for serving seniors and positively

impacting their lives and the lives of

their families. The financial

requirements are minimum liquid

expenses for 12 months. “We provide

Setting Benchmarks of Quality

®

Assisting Hands Home Care sets a

standard for providing quality

caregivers to its clients. The

application and interview processes are

characteristically in-depth and include

a comprehensive background check

before providing care in the homes of

someone’s loved one. Each franchise

location follows a curriculum based on

their State's requirements. Once the

interview process is complete, the

newly hired caregiver attends

scheduled orientation and training.

After theory and practical training, new

employees are assigned to a case. The

team at Assisting Hands is sure the

hired individuals have the necessary

tools and the heart to provide

compassionate care for seniors or

anyone that needs personal care and

companionship.

The company also utilizes its own

Assisting Hands University training.

Being an experienced leader, share with us your opinion

on how the adoption of modern technologies in the

healthcare discipline has transformed the industry and

what more could be expected in the near future?

I believe that technology has given a new level of

17 | August 2021 | www.insightcare.com

transparency to the individuals receiving and delivering

healthcare, ensuring that the best and most efficient

healthcare possible is given. Coupled with that, I believe

that the extended reach technology has given to people

living in rural areas, who may not be able to read doctors or

staff, the ability to have a virtual checkup or doctor's

appointment has been an incredibly bright light for those

who lacked the right type of care in the past due to their

location.

We welcome the new adoption of technology in healthcare

head-on and plan to further make our presence in the

healthcare tech space.

Taking into consideration, the current pandemic, and its

impact on global economies, how are you driving your

company to sustain operations and ensuring safety of

your employees at the same time?

We make the health and safety of our staff, both inside and

outside the office, our first priority. Throughout the

pandemic, we have implemented several new processes and

procedures that ensure for a safe and smooth transition to

work-from-home if the restrictions require. In conjunction

with that, our organization offers internal rapid virus testing

to all of our staff, should the situation call for it and there

has been a risk of exposure, presenting itself to any staff

member in the office.

Technology has played a critical role in the success of our

24/7 client care model, ensuring that all calls, messages and

communication do not go interrupted when it is needed

most. We understand the key role they have played

throughout this pandemic and have taken the challenge

head on, without allowing for weaknesses in their systems,

ensuring that the brave healthcare professionals have the

right support.

What would be your ad.vice to budding entrepreneurs

who aspire to venture into the healthcare sector?

As a seasoned entrepreneur, having developed and nurtured

3 companies myself, I believe that there are elements of

nature and nurture for young entrepreneurs.

Being nurtured or encouraged from a young age to be hard

working is absolutely paramount to the success of your

business and one of the most critical characteristics of a

successful entrepreneur. I believe that beyond anything, you

need an exceptional work ethic and a drive for achieving

the impossible or unimaginable. Entrepreneurs need to be

resilient, tough and be able to bounce back from any

potential issue or speed bump you may encounter.

taken lightly and driving your organization into the future

with a strong front is an important aspect of showing

strength and innovation in an industry that can be as

difficult as healthcare.

Where do you envision your organization to be in the

long run and what are your future goals?

We have grown exponentially in the past year and a half,

both technologically and through process, continuous

improvement, and client base. We have a unique advantage

of being one of the largest in Southern Ontario, giving us

the infrastructure and ability to expand into markets that

have not yet been touched by this type of healthcare

staffing.

We are committed to expanding further into the testing and

screening, vaccination, private care, hospital staffing, long

term care homes and public healthcare facilities with more

ferocity than ever before, ensuring our name continues to be

the best in healthcare staffing into the future.

How the

COVID-19

pandemic

changed the

Healthcare space.

The worst of environmental degradation or even the

biggest of asteroid collision couldn’t do what the

invisible-to-the-human eye Novel Corona Virus of

2019 could do. It flattened the earth in its entirety, bringing

the whole of humanity to a single place and pushing them

back into dark ages.

Still reeling under the fear (yes, more fear) of an imminent

impact, humanity has changed for both the better and the

worse in quite a few ways that include ways in which

healthcare shall henceforth be administered. While the likes

of work-from-home, buy-at-home (e-commerce), nocontact

buying, selling and so on are expected given the

need to maintain certain distances, they have left their telltale

signs and effects in the medicines and healthcare (and

related) industries. The more prominent changes worth

noting include:

Focus shifted to treating symptoms at patients’ homes or

dedicated facilities

Prior to the pandemic’s bulldozing most hospitals and

healthcare facilities worldwide, the norm was at best to

admit patients within the hospital if home could not suffice

or was insufficient to handle certain medical conditions.

With the pandemic overwhelming most hospitals and

appearing to be the breeding grounds for the virus, newer

forms of remote treatments came to the fore for the first

time, with the prominent ones including shifting patients to

specially created facilities, either close to or at a distance

from the main hospital and treating even confirmed covid

patients in the confines of their home once their condition

stabilized. Going forward, out-patient could be the norm

rd

with the availability of 3 party nursing staff from

independent registered sources. This could be an enormous

help to the healthcare facility by letting them treat only the

most critical of cases.

Immunization before the spread has been taken to be

more important than general health

The antidote for the smallpox virus took over a decade to

formulate and arrive at. In contrast, the vaccine for the

Covid-19 virus took just 20% of that time. While the results

have been mixed with a high degree of success, what it has

shown is that push coming to shove, healthcare sciences can

put up a fight.

Add to that these days the aid from digital and data means

which help medical sciences read and analyze data to

predict the likely courses of diseases besides deciphering

trends of diseases worldwide in certain situations and

circumstances.

With each step of medical science and healthcare being

administered and assisted by data-gathering devices,

Constant Change

including IoT-enabled ones, the field of life sciences is a

hotbed that is expected to not only help derive the right

medicines but also do so with pinpoint accuracy and needed

derivatize that take into account the condition and

characteristics of each patient. Customization of medication

could be the outcome of the extensive use of data in

designing and creating medicines. And one of its biggest

uses was during the pandemic.

Online & remote consultation is today an established

norm

Like the saying among the Arabs that when Prophet

Muhammad didn’t go to the mountains, the mountains came

to him; the field of healthcare, post the pandemic, is seeing

the increasing use of online and remote consultation for

every manner of treatment. Be it common diseases that

21 | August 2021 | www.insightcare.com

come about due to the change of weather—stomach

ailments, sore throats, dental health to mental

health—everything can today be treated remotely without

the need to visit a medical facility.

While apps have today come about giving a line of sight to

patients and healthcare professionals, what has truly added

to make it a viable option are wearable devices and

emergency health records that are kept on the cloud.

With these in place, pandemic or no pandemic, a visit to a

health facility may shortly be entirely unnecessary with the

MP knowing in exact terms the condition of a patient and

prescribing the right course of action with or without

medication and required support.

Non-communicable diseases are seen as the drivers in

aiding the spread of the pandemic

The Covid-19 has shown us the value of being healthy and

staying away from lifestyle diseases, including diabetes,

heart diseases and cancers. The presence of diseases,

including these, aggravate adverse health conditions

because the body’s immune defences remain compromised

and that too for a fairly long duration.

A study in Nigeria of Covid patients has shown that close to

25% of patients had at least the comorbidity, of which the

most common were hypertension at 75% and diabetes

covering the rest. In the changed scenario, the emphasis

could be to stay away from such diseases as the way of

staying healthy even during conditions like a pandemic.

More emphasis on people’s mental health

The Covid-19 pandemic was an unprecedented event in the

entire history of humankind that has affected us in multiple

ways. The disease itself took likes in the thousands adding

fear in the minds of the elderly, the infirm and those who

had no means to fight the disease in any material way.

The ensuing lockdown only compounded problems in

multiple ways. Without any way of going out and venting

feelings, issues got bottled inside, looking for just one

opportunity to explode. It wasn’t simply staying inside that

created problems. Jobs were lost as industries after

industries closed down.

Depression, sadness and uncertainty only added. In

insolation, with nothing much to do and anxiety catching

up, substance abuse is said to have grown in leaps and

bounds. In the overall scenario, the long-term effects of job

losses and addictions to alcohol and psychotropic

substances is likely to have a negative impact on a

substantial part of the workforce.

With no way out, a new form of working has crept in to

keep the industry alive – Work-from-home. It’s only adding

to the gradual making of a perennial office at home where

work gets accomplished 24 x 7 with practically no time for

the family. In the long run, this shall surely have an impact

on mental health and relations within the family.

While the majority of the cases shall be addressed with the

cloud of the pandemic slowly clearing, it may take a long

time given that jobs worldwide have been affected, relations

lost to the diseases, and in quite a few cases, the most

troublesome place in the world, the office has now come

into the home, for good. A mix of these is sure to stay

around for some time and show its effects in the form of

increased medical and counselling needs.

Increase in the use of IoT-enabled wearables

While wearables were always around for close to half a

decade (if not more) now in the form of distance trackers,

heart-rate trackers, and others that did rudimentary, such

activities, things took a steep climb in the wearables market

after the advent of the pandemic where there was palpable

fear arising out of the state of one’s health. What this has

led to is a plethora of devices as far apart as Apple Watch,

WHOOP Strap, Fitbit, Zephyr, BioHarness and the likes.

These could, among others, indicate physiological changes,

heart rate, heart rate variability, resting rate and respiration,

stress, activity, and also sleep. Integrated together, it could

exhibit signal to noise ratios (SNR) that may predict things

out of sync and help take corrective action right when it is

most needed.

Wearables, in fact, are a separate science in itself, given that

it’s the first line of information that feeds storage in the

cloud for accurate and often pinpointed medications to save

lives.

10 Most Trusted Home Care Providers 2021

The ongoing COVID-19

pandemic has enforced a new

way of living. Stepping out for

grocery shopping to banking services

has been an important part of a routine

for many. However, series of

lockdowns and social distancing norms

have forced everyone to stay in and

manage daily routine via digital

platforms except for healthcare

services.

With COVID-19 testing the prowess of

the healthcare industry, it has become

difficult for individuals in a need of

assistance to receive appropriate

healthcare services at home. Many felt

the need for at-home caregivers to

assist in their healthcare needs as well

as to minimize the risk of getting

infected by visiting the hospitals.

Realizing the need for caregivers

during pandemic, home care providers

stepped up to fill the gap and assist

primary healthcare providers to extend

services at homes. HomeWell

Franchising Inc. is among the

renowned home care service providers

providing consistent, cordial, and

quality services in the US. The

company, with its robust franchise

model and several programs,

empowers clients to stay home

healthily with the right caregiver to

client's needs. We offer varying levels of care

that range from providing companionship to

someone who lives alone to assisting with

activities of daily living to more specialized

care when advanced health conditions

present.

HomeWell also offers a flexible frequency of

care options. For some of our clients that live

far from their families, having a caregiver a

few hours a week provides the peace of mind

they need knowing that their loved one is in

good hands. There are also those clients that

need frequent help and require 24-hour care

or live-in care.

HomeWell also offers special programs. Our

foundational program, Life Enrichment

Activities Program (LEAP) aims to combat

social isolation and loneliness. With LEAP,

our clients get to do the things they love

alongside their dedicated HomeWell

returning home can be stressful, the

GoHomeWell program eases anxiety

remain independent at home and avoid

the risk of readmission.

What is your opinion on the impact

of the current pandemic on the

global healthcare sector, and how

has your company fared during the

pandemic and subsequent

lockdowns?

The global pandemic has shed a light

on home care and how valuable the

industry is in the care continuum. We

saw hospitals that were overcrowded

with COVID patients. To keep other

patients safe and make room at the

hospital for more acute cases, those

that could go home were sent home.

However, they still needed help

recovering in their homes and that's

where home care and the help of a

caregiver becomes valuable.

Additionally, we saw many of our

partners in the nursing home and

assisted living facilities struggling to

keep their residents safe.

We have seen the company grow

exponentially during the pandemic.

While lockdowns were occurring, the

safest place to be was at home and we

provide our services to our clients in

the safety and comfort of their home.

Additionally, with so many industries

taking a hit, many people were looking

for a new, more resilient business

opportunity and we have seen our

franchisee candidate pipeline grow

greatly.

Tell us more about your franchising

opportunities, eligibility criteria, and

benefits that a probable franchisee

may receive.

HomeWell Franchising Inc offers

franchises through HomeWell Care

Services with many territories

available across the U.S. In addition to

financial requirements, such as

liquidity and net worth, we also look

for franchisees that share the same

values as HomeWell. We look for

franchise owners seeking financial

success by making a positive impact on

clients and their families' lives. We are

not just providing quality care; we also

provide peace of mind to families who

have entrusted their loved ones' care to

our agencies.

As a franchisee, there are many

benefits. We offer a tried-and-true

business model that a franchisee can

follow. By being engaged and tapping

into the resources that HomeWell

provides, our franchisees can follow a

plan, while also having the flexibility

to go after multiple revenue streams

and building an operation that best

suits their level of expertise and desire.

Additionally, HomeWell offers its

owners a large network of fellow

owners to tap into for knowledge

sharing, advice, and comradery. Along

with dedicated franchise business

coaches and ongoing training,

HomeWell owners have a full, built-in

support system. Our award-winning

brand identity and marketing programs

are turn-key for our franchisees to

utilize. And as business owners, they

have the freedom to build their

business with the support of a national

company.

As an established leader, what would

be your advice to the budding

entrepreneurs and enthusiasts

aspiring to venture into the home

care services sector?

There is a lot of potential in the home

care industry. The 65+ age population

is growing faster than any other

population segment and the need for

non-medical home care continues to

rise. However, while there is much

growth and opportunity in this

industry, it takes hard work and

commitment to building a successful

agency.

It is not a business that will grow itself.

Our owners put in a lot of effort

building relationships, growing trust

with their employees and clients, and

managing the day-to-day operations of

their home care agency. At the end of

the day, we often find that our home

care owners can do very well

financially by doing well for others in

their community.

How do you envision scaling your

company's operations in 2021?

Our goal is to add 20 new owners to

our system and to assist our current

franchisees with their growth. To

accomplish that, we've recently

expanded our Franchise Services team

by adding a head of Franchise Services

and an additional Franchise Business

Consultant to our team.

This will help our owners with

launching and scaling their businesses

faster and more effectively. And as

always, we continue to optimize our

organization and operations to best suit

the needs of our franchise system and

continue to provide value to every

owner no matter where they are in the

life cycle of their business.

Founder and Medical Director,

Anti-Aging & Longevity

Center of Philadelphia

A FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE

& ER DOCTOR’S ADVICE ON

HOW TO BOOST IMMUNE SYSTEM AGAINST THE

DELTA VARIANT

- Dr. Seema Bonney, Founder and Medical Director, Anti-Aging & Longevity Center of Philadelphia

As a functional medical doctor, my primary focus is

helping each patient realize their optimal health

and longevity. The foundation for our treatment is

connection and communication. We spend a great deal of

time learning about the patient, their family history, medical

history, lifestyle, symptoms, and concerns.

A patient-centered approach assures that their care is

individualized to their specific needs. Therefore, the first

and foremost technology that I rely on is basic human

interaction. By first understanding the patient, I can make

recommendations that utilize science and technology to

support optimal wellness. Having a solid biological and

human understanding of the patient, along with findings

supported by data and science, allows me to explain specific

recommendations to the patient.

There are various methods we will use to get a true picture

of what may be going on with a patient. Here are a few of

the scientific advancements and technologies that we use to

support optimal health and longevity for each patient:

Micronutrient testing measures 31 vitamins, minerals,

amino/fatty acids, antioxidants, and metabolites and how

they affect cellular function in a person. Uncovering these

deficiencies allows us to slow the aging process, prevent or

delay degenerative diseases and repair cellular function.

Research indicates that nearly 2 out of 3 Americans suffer

from digestive issues. Science shows us that overall gut

health is a biomarker for one’s overall physical and mental

health. The vagus nerve is the primary component of the

parasympathetic nervous system. The PNS is responsible

for many crucial bodily functions, including mood, immune

response, heart rate, and digestion. The vagus nerve extends

from the brain to the gut, thus communicating information

about the state of the inner organs to the brain. The gut is

often referred to as the second brain.

Understanding the role of the gastrointestinal tract in

overall health makes it a critical component in supporting

optimal health and longevity. With advanced testing and

technology, we can get a true picture of the microbiome and

make nutritional and supplement recommendations that

restore gut health.

Hormones play an integral role in overall health. They are

the body’s chemical messengers. Hormones help control

many of the body’s major processes, including metabolism.

Hormonal imbalance may show up in various symptoms in

the body such as weight gain, fatigue, pain and stiffness in

the joints, gastrointestinal distress, increased hunger or

thirst, decreased sex drive, depression, anxiety, thinning

hair, puffy face, dry skin, and more.

When a patient presents with symptoms that may be a sign

of hormonal imbalance, it’s important to do testing to get a

clear picture. We test estrogen, testosterone, thyroid, and

cortisol levels. The results can allow us to present scientific

recommendations to the patient. With this knowledge, the

patient may also make lifestyle changes that support

hormonal balance.

Another emerging technology important for our patient care

is the continuous glucose monitoring system. Insulin

resistance is a biomarker for many chronic conditions, yet

most people that have insulin resistance or who are prediabetic

are unaware. Insulin helps control the amount of

glucose (sugar) in the blood.

29 | August 2021 | www.insightcare.com

With insulin resistance, the cells don’t respond normally to

insulin; thus, glucose doesn’t enter the cells as easily, and as

a result, it builds up in the blood. Left untreated, this can

eventually lead to Diabetes 2. Unfortunately, insulin

resistance typically has no symptoms, which is why it is

critical to have your sugar levels and HgAIC tested.

If a patient is borderline pre-diabetic or insulin-resistant, in

addition to lifestyle changes (supported by our staff health

coaches), we may prescribe a continuous glucose monitor.

There have been incredible advances in this technology

over the years. The data is seamlessly and continuously

uploaded to the cloud using the patient’s smartphone. The

cost of this technology has also decreased, which has made

it more affordable and accessible to those at risk.

The real-time biofeedback supports the behavioral change

and decision making. Patients can easily observe which

foods and exercises affect them most. This immediate

feedback allows patients to learn about their own bodies

and specific physiologic responses. When a patient sees for

themselves how their breakfast choice spikes their blood

sugar, they are more inclined to make a different choice.

With this data, we can also support change by giving

recommendations that improve overall health and longevity.

About the Author

Dr. Seema Bonney, MD, is the founder and medical

director of the Anti-Aging & Longevity Center of

Philadelphia. She is dual board-certied in both Anti-

Aging and Regenerative Medicine and Emergency

Medicine and has completed a fellowship in

regenerative medicine.

Dr. Bonney is a holistic doctor who is passionate about

changing the way medicine is practiced. Her emphasis

at her practice is based on prevention and wellness

and diagnosis/treatment of root causes of common

symptoms such as weight gain, low energy, hormonal

imbalances, insomnia, and anxiety/depression. She is

focused on helping her patients achieve optimum

physical and mental wellness by helping them change

their habits and form new healthy ones through her

work with them.

If we can prevent Type 2 diabetes, we prevent the chronic

conditions that typically follow, such as heart disease and

metabolic syndrome, thus improving quality of life and

health.

While we must keep in mind that the starting point should

always be with the patient themselves, I am fascinated by

emerging technologies in healthcare and am constantly

reading and researching innovative ideas that may support

the goal of optimal health and wellness. With the

combination of communication, connection, and support,

we can optimize the use of emerging technology to truly

advocate for patient care, well-being, health, and longevity.

Dr. Bonney earned her undergraduate and MD

degrees through the prestigious six-year accelerated

medical program at Jefferson Medical College in

conjunction with The Pennsylvania State University.

TechDriven

Digitization came about with

the advent of computers when

it was found that the analogue

ways of communication don’t hold

good beyond a point given that things

physical, be it radio-waves, sea-waves

and airwaves can carry only so much

information.

Close to half-a-century back when

computers became a reality, so did

digitization though in rudimentary

ways. A few decades since then and we

are in the midst of a raging whirlpool

of digitization that may in a short while

envelope every aspect of life where

communication and service are a

given.

Of these, the following 5 innovations

stand out prominently.

IoT devices! According to

Stastita.com, close to 40 billion active

IoT devices worldwide shall be in

operations in just a few years from

now. From the time you open your

eyes to the time you go back to sleep

and also when you are fast sleep, a

slew of sensors embedded in as many

gadgets and appliances shall monitor

you and your action vis-à-vis set

standards with respect to hundreds of

actions, be it related to exercise, sleep

patterns, air-con vis-à-vis body

temperature, heart-rate and bloodpressure

details, details of blood sugar,

lighting in the bathroom, eatables in

the refrigerator, clothes in the washing

machine, dishes in the dishwasher and

so on.

A device for every reason would

transmit information to a centralized

hub besides communicating between

related devices, and then

communication information to the hub.

This hub connects to the internet and

transmits and stores every bit of

information to take relevant action,

including sounding the alarm,

increasing/reducing the aircon, note the

body’s vitals against standards and

inform when things go out-of-hand,

heat water in the kitchen or the bath’s

boiler, adjust lighting to suite the

occasion and the mood, inform on the

status of foods in the

refrigerators…and so on, and on and

on!

It would help keep away the mundane

and routine and concentrate only on the

important and pressing matters. It

would also help when we forget or get

forgetful- yes, patients of Parkinson’s

33 | August 2021 | www.insightcare.com

and Alzheimer would stand to gain as

the machines would do things they

would be expected otherwise.

Robots to clean and cook

The Narwal T10 Mop & Vacuum

Cleaner Automatic Self-Cleaning

device is the way the world is headed

as far a technology is concerned. It not

only cleans up floors but also goes

back to its Base and cleans itself. It's

cleaning includes both dry and wet

cleaning wherein it cleans its own

brushes and other accessories.

With two high-capacity tanks, it can

sense both clean and dirty water and

can spray for further cleaning. Using

SLAM navigation, it records a home's

layout on smart Maps to ensure

systematic cleaning besides charging

its batteries on its own when the latter

runs low. With a powerful suction

device and a battery of sensors, it is

said to loosen and then eliminates

debris – even hair without itself getting

entangled!

And that’s just one. Smart washing

machines, dishwashers and even

chimneys too are a rage these days

which not only do their job but take

care of themselves without adding to

its owner’s bills beyond a point.

3. IoT activated safety systems!

The IoT of things has surveillance

systems firmly in its grip with cameras

connected to the Wi-Fi network

monitoring and controlling accesses to

places and things. These can be

controlled, mobilized, immobilized,

and changed at the touch of a button on

a smartphone’s app.

IoT has taken charge of creating the

right web using a mix of cameras,

sensors, lighting, sound system

detectors and to not only record but

also to ward off potential threats. Using

wireless protocols such as Wi-Fi,

Z-Wave, Zigbee, or a proprietary mesh,

it helps add or reduce access thru doors

and windows besides monitoring

motion and movements thru places.

Their output can be stored either in

devices on premises, on the equipment

itself (on SD cards) or on the cloud.

These depend on usage and one’s

budgets

4. Smart switches!

IoT has given a new meaning to

switches and sockets! They are

increasingly getting the “smart” tag

and are said to be enriching lives

worldwide. It’s expected that by the

end of year 2021, in excess of USD 60

billion shall be spent worldwide on

smart switches making them an

important part of one’s existence.

Like everything “smart”, the smart

switches too report to a central hub that

connects to the net, and thereon to the

app which controls it. Its “smartness”

is derived from the fact that it can

control devices that are connected to it

be they devices, appliances, lights, and

fans. Depending upon the app’s

functionality, commands can either be

typed-in or increased-decreased

manually (like a remote) or thru voice

commands. These can further be

connected to security cameras, alarm,

and music systems to address a variety

of needs. Their benefits range from

convenience to easy integration of

multiple functionality (lights with

sound to act as an alarm or to just set

right a bad mood!), to efficient

integration of systems including

sensors, camera and other safety

devices for the perfect and

impenetrable security web to savings

on costs by timely switching on and off

appliances in use.

5. Smart security cameras!

Digitization and all its downstream

benefits including interconnected

devices means security is today not an

issue irrespective of where you are on

the plant. Be it in pitch darkness or the

sunniest of places, one can catch action

in more than one way including

cameras that can capture, store and

transmit live pictures and entire videos

of incidents. These have been such a

hit that in some localities around the

world, incidences of street crimes have

come down so drastically that it’s hard

to imagine a time when things were

anything but safe. Infrared,

motion-detectors, 360-degree, security

cameras today come in all format to

suite all needs and budgets. At the

bottom are single-location built-in

storage cameras that most homes have

where data is captured on SD cards

inserted in the camera. For those

looking for a wider reach, there are a

host of cameras built into the premises

with a dedicated hard-disk that

constantly scans and stores entire day’s

happenings. With IoT or a net

connection, the output of these cameras

can be seen anywhere. At the top of the

pyramid are entire complexes ringed

with cameras that are integrated to

alarm systems, sirens and accesses

control systems that not only record

but also warn, and with the right

permissions, can even debar entry into

certain places- all the while

transmitting images and details to

authorized people thru dedicated apps.

With every passing day, the world of

tech innovations for home care

increases by leaps and bounds. With

newer discoveries, the old ones slowly

disappear though sometimes they do

try and make a comeback. That said,

this is one interesting space to be in. As

for us, we shall keep brining you newer

ideas as they hit the horizon.
