Whats <strong>the</strong> deal?<br />
<strong>Sports</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternships have created a <strong>to</strong>xic power<br />
dynamic <strong>in</strong> which those <strong>in</strong> charge exploit <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
power <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong> use students for “free labour”.<br />
<strong>The</strong>se last for long periods <strong>of</strong> time, up <strong>to</strong> a whole<br />
season, with <strong>the</strong> “employees” <strong>in</strong>curr<strong>in</strong>g massive<br />
undue costs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> process.<br />
This power comes from a systemic pressure cham<strong>be</strong>r<br />
created by sports clubs and higher education<br />
<strong>in</strong>stitutions. Students are pressured <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>be</strong>liev<strong>in</strong>g that success can only <strong>be</strong> achieved by<br />
ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g “<strong>in</strong>valuable experience” through<br />
<strong>in</strong>tern<strong>in</strong>g. This has created an environment <strong>of</strong> high<br />
demand and competition for places, allow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
employers <strong>to</strong> take advantage and exploit desperate<br />
students.<br />
Students <strong>the</strong>refore must <strong>be</strong> educated <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir rights<br />
and empowered <strong>to</strong> ask <strong>the</strong> important questions <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>stitutions and employers.
Whats <strong>the</strong> problem?<br />
This is a problem <strong>of</strong> privilege and equal opportunity. <strong>The</strong><br />
system <strong>be</strong>nefits those already <strong>in</strong> positions <strong>of</strong> privilege<br />
and leaves <strong>be</strong>h<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> most vulnerable.<br />
<strong>Privilege</strong> is used <strong>in</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> ways:<br />
- opportunities are <strong>of</strong>ten not advertised, mean<strong>in</strong>g those<br />
with pre-exist<strong>in</strong>g connections <strong>to</strong> clubs or coaches<br />
have an unfair advantage<br />
- <strong>be</strong>cause <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> an unpaid position, those who<br />
can’t fund <strong>the</strong> cost (~£1000/month) are unable <strong>to</strong> apply<br />
- access <strong>to</strong> transport or <strong>the</strong> ability <strong>to</strong> relocate is also a<br />
barrier <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> underprivileged<br />
What needs <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> done<br />
<strong>The</strong>re needs <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> disruption <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> current system. <strong>The</strong><br />
gatekeepers are sitt<strong>in</strong>g pretty at <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>p <strong>of</strong> a st<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />
pile <strong>of</strong> exploitation. <strong>The</strong> students at <strong>the</strong> bot<strong>to</strong>m need <strong>to</strong><br />
collaborate <strong>to</strong> cause a shift <strong>in</strong> power. I hold 3<br />
gatekeepers <strong>to</strong> account as those who must <strong>be</strong> disrupted <strong>in</strong><br />
order <strong>to</strong> affect significant change.<br />
Universities - <strong>the</strong>y claim <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> sites <strong>of</strong> social mobility,<br />
but once aga<strong>in</strong> are found fail<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> provide equal<br />
opportunity <strong>to</strong> all. <strong>The</strong>y cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>to</strong> use <strong>the</strong>ir platform<br />
<strong>to</strong> advertise underpaid opportunities all <strong>the</strong> while<br />
fail<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> provide relevant f<strong>in</strong>ancial support or<br />
guidance. <strong>The</strong>y are <strong>in</strong> a position <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y can refuse<br />
<strong>to</strong> advertise <strong>the</strong>se underpaid opportunities and stem <strong>the</strong><br />
flow <strong>of</strong> sports students <strong>to</strong>wards illegal employers. <strong>The</strong>y<br />
have a duty <strong>of</strong> care <strong>to</strong>wards <strong>the</strong>ir students but <strong>the</strong>y<br />
<strong>in</strong>stead focus <strong>the</strong>ir attention on <strong>the</strong>ir employability<br />
statistics.<br />
<strong>Sports</strong> Clubs - <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>be</strong>st position <strong>to</strong> affect<br />
change at source, but are under no pressure <strong>to</strong> do so as<br />
<strong>the</strong> system <strong>be</strong>nefits <strong>the</strong>m so greatly. <strong>The</strong>y need educat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and held <strong>to</strong> account over <strong>the</strong> employment rights <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>terns.<br />
Government - <strong>the</strong>y must provide clarity on <strong>the</strong> rights <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>terns and <strong>the</strong> expectations <strong>of</strong> employers and support it<br />
with hard legislation <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong> force <strong>the</strong> hand <strong>of</strong><br />
employers and universities.
SPORTS SCIENCE ROLE<br />
A degree or equally high level<br />
qualification, additional sport<strong>in</strong>g<br />
qualifications desired. Previous<br />
experience <strong>in</strong> role. Role will <strong>be</strong><br />
flexible. Work<strong>in</strong>g even<strong>in</strong>gs and<br />
weekends. Ability <strong>to</strong> drive, no<br />
subsidisation <strong>of</strong>fered. Ideally,<br />
experienced but look<strong>in</strong>g for a way<br />
<strong>to</strong> boost your career. Future<br />
employment not guaranteed. High<br />
demand, apply now. £0/hour<br />
Would you ideally apply for this job? I’d suspect<br />
probably not. But this is <strong>the</strong> reality <strong>of</strong> what people are<br />
left hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> apply for. Employers ask for ever<br />
<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g levels <strong>of</strong> qualification and experience for<br />
ever reduc<strong>in</strong>g levels <strong>of</strong> quality and payment, and <strong>the</strong>y<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>to</strong> get away with it.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Sut<strong>to</strong>n Trust asked <strong>in</strong>tern<strong>in</strong>g students how much <strong>the</strong>y<br />
were paid for <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>tern roles and <strong>be</strong>low are <strong>the</strong><br />
results.<br />
How much were you paid whilst <strong>in</strong>tern<strong>in</strong>g?<br />
Don't Know<br />
3%<br />
M<strong>in</strong>imum Wage<br />
27%<br />
No Payment<br />
41%<br />
Expenses<br />
21% < M<strong>in</strong>imum Wage<br />
9%<br />
As you can see, nearly 3/4 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terns were not paid<br />
m<strong>in</strong>imum wage. This study was across all sec<strong>to</strong>rs, not just<br />
sport, from experience I’d suspect <strong>the</strong> figure <strong>in</strong> sport <strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>be</strong> even more concern<strong>in</strong>g.
Know your Rights<br />
Under <strong>the</strong> “Employment Rights Act 1996”, anyone<br />
provid<strong>in</strong>g work or services <strong>to</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r party are<br />
entitled <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imum wage and are categorised as a<br />
worker. However, and here is <strong>the</strong> *clever* bit, it states<br />
anyone work<strong>in</strong>g as part <strong>of</strong> a student placement or for<br />
work experience are not entitled <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> same payment, I<br />
couldn’t tell you why! Thats where <strong>the</strong> buck s<strong>to</strong>ps with<br />
most employers, but this is where <strong>the</strong> ambiguity <strong>be</strong>g<strong>in</strong>s:<br />
That same law also states that if <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tern is work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>to</strong>ward <strong>the</strong> ord<strong>in</strong>ary function <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess (or sports<br />
club <strong>in</strong> this <strong>in</strong>stance) <strong>the</strong>n <strong>in</strong>terns are entitled <strong>to</strong><br />
m<strong>in</strong>imum wage payment. No wonder no one understands<br />
whats go<strong>in</strong>g on! Employers get away with students not<br />
know<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir rights, but not you, YOU are now<br />
empowered with <strong>the</strong> power that is s<strong>to</strong>ne cold legal<br />
legislation.<br />
Seven Red Flags <strong>of</strong> sports Internships<br />
Here is a list <strong>of</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> careful <strong>of</strong> and question<br />
when look<strong>in</strong>g for a potential <strong>in</strong>ternship opportunity:<br />
<strong>the</strong> payment/wage doesn’t match <strong>the</strong> skills and<br />
experience that has <strong>be</strong>en requested.<br />
<strong>the</strong> role requires high commitment such as even<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and weekend work prevent<strong>in</strong>g alternative paid jobs<br />
on <strong>the</strong> side (<strong>of</strong>ten <strong>the</strong> case with sports roles).<br />
<strong>the</strong> role is ambiguous and up <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpretation.<br />
<strong>the</strong> role has no dedicated supervisor.<br />
<strong>the</strong> role has no predef<strong>in</strong>ed end/duration.<br />
<strong>the</strong>re is no potential for future employment stated<br />
on complet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternship.<br />
<strong>the</strong> role violates work<strong>in</strong>g laws (see above).<br />
Use <strong>the</strong>se red flags as guidance for questions <strong>to</strong> ask at<br />
<strong>in</strong>terview or even <strong>to</strong> flag any potentially unlawful<br />
opportunities <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> university or citizens advice.
