Editors’ Note
Let us level with you. Regardless of how extravagantly
people dress it up with their sugar-coated words and
pandering speeches, the truth is still this: the situation
you find yourselves in is simply, terribly, awful. The
pandemic snatched away your hopes of a spectacular
farewell and you found yourself blankly staring at the
ubiquitous blue screen in your tattered t-shirts and
stretched out bottoms, a far cry from the pomp of
tuxedos and suede jackets and grace of flowy sarees
and lehengas. In what can only be termed as needless,
malicious subterfuge, the pandemic went ahead
and robbed you of a freshers’ party. Are those parties
an epitome of awkwardness as a bunch of sunlightdeprived
students try to mingle with each other after
having spent two years in the company of party animals
HC Verma and OP Tandon? Yes. Did you deserve to find
that out for yourselves? Absolutely. Then it went ahead
and stuck you back on that same chair, in front of that
same screen, to go about doing the same thing you
found yourself doing a year ago. So, are you back to
square one?
No, not quite. This time you have discovered DTU
Times, and we assure you that the next twenty-two
pages will ease your transition into the audacious life
you have chosen. Welcome to the Times newsletter, or
as we like to call it, DTU 101. Once you flip this page,
you are going to witness our thoughtfully curated
news pieces and bespoke articles, crafted with tons
of love by our entire team. A little further and you will
reach our exclusive interview with the newly appointed
vice-chancellor of DTU, Prof. JP Saini. Give it a read to
learn about how he seeks to bring a shift in the current
paradigm of academia, his goals and his lofty vision for a
more focused DTU. Then, you will get to feast your eyes
on our delectable magnum opus, the centerfold. The
second half is where you learn about the students of
DTU, their accomplishments, their trials and tribulations
and the numerous avenues they have chosen to excel
in. Witness the achievements of the societies they have
built, the competitions they have won, the products
they have innovated, the people they’ve helped. If any
of the clubs tickle your fancy, contact us, praise this
newsletter, and we’ll probably put in a good word for
you.
For the next few months, the spotlight will shine on the
batch of 2025 as they enter the college gates for the
first time ever. A vast expanse stretches before you,
both literally and metaphorically. Perhaps it will take
you an entire semester to learn the shortest routes to
your classes or perhaps you will only discover the most
Zoom-friendly corners of your homes. Hundreds of
acres of verdant land, and yet you will wind up finding
a small, tucked away spot, perhaps under a tree near
Mic-Mac, or at the back of the library, where you will
feel most at home. The four years that lie ahead are
yours to build upon: to make mistakes, to experiment
with activities you never thought you would take up,
to navigate through friendships, to radically alter your
academic and career aspirations, and to grow and
learn from the diverse populace at Delhi Technological
University. No amount of ‘get-ready-for-college’ guides
can efficiently prepare you for the dilemmas that you
will face in the upcoming years nor will they help you
decipher the extent of opportunities that awaits you.
But your best bet is the newsletter that you hold in your
hands, your gateway to getting the most out of your
time here.
With Edition 54, we welcome you aboard a ship that
has previously sailed with some of the most prolific
scientists, engineers, businesspersons, actors, writers
and researchers in the country. Today, it prepares to
embark on a journey with you. DTU Times wishes you
the best of luck and promises to be by your side as you
navigate the choppy waters that lie ahead.

Vice Chancellor’s
Address
Ever since I assumed this new office, I have been consistently amazed at Delhi Technological University’s
ability to weather all challenges and emerge as a leading technical institution. This progress has only been
possible due to the university’s efforts in providing all its students with an environment they can flourish in,
regardless of their chosen domain. This emphasis given to a student’s holistic development is especially
commendable considering the drastic changes the university has been forced to adopt in the face of
the pandemic. It is heartwarming to see that the suspension of classes and other offline activities has not
dampened the spirit of excellence that has characterised DTU since its inception.
In addition, I am also pleased to note DTU’s steady progress in both the NIRF and the Times rankings, a
development that one can accredit to all members of the DTU family, teachers and students alike. I would
like to heartily congratulate my predecessor, Dr. Yogesh Singh, for this achievement and to express my
gratitude to him for ushering in the dynamic reforms that have been instrumental in the university’s growth.
I will strive to sustain this upward rise during my tenure and do justice to DTU’s illustrious history.
As we move towards the commencement of a new academic session, it brings me great pride and
joy to welcome the incoming batch of students to the DTU family. They will be greeted by exceptional
opportunities and I hope that they capitalise on these chances with a pure & unselfish intent. I wish luck
to all the students aspiring to innovate and create, and encourage all endeavors that wish to serve the
greater good.
I warmly congratulate the team of DTU Times on the publication of yet another well-crafted edition. I hope
that the new students joining us will find it a perfect introduction to DTU’s ecosystem.

VICE CHANCELLOR’S
INTERVIEW
DTU Times interviewed the newly appointed Vice Chancellor of DTU, Prof. JP Saini. Read on as he talks about his vision
for the university, the status quo, and the upcoming AI-powered classrooms of DTU.
You have been the Vice Chancellor of NSUT for the last
three years, and have only recently been appointed as the
Vice Chancellor of DTU. Based on your limited time here,
can you share your reflections on our ecosystem?
I have been closely associated with DTU for the last four
and a half years. My friend, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor
of Delhi University, Prof. Yogesh Singh, had roped me
into numerous academic activities conducted by various
bodies of the university. Prof. Yogesh Singh is himself a
member of the board of management at NSUT, which
helps us implement state-of-the-art practices across both
institutions simultaneously, so that both NSUT and DTU
progress in tandem.
In fact, I will say, on the record, that when students
contemplate choosing between one of the two to pursue
their studies, they should consider their comfort and
proximity to the university rather than compare the
universities’ academic virtues. Both DTU and NSUT are
excellent institutions with experienced faculty and welldeveloped
infrastructure. When it comes to cultural
events, both the universities whole-heartedly participate
in each other’s fests. Even the faculties host friendly
tournaments of cricket and football wherein they invite
the other university’s faculty members.
The students and faculty of DTU have been conscientiously
working towards authoring research papers, as well as
implementing them. In spite of this, we still lag behind in
the research impact facet of the NIRF rankings. What do
you think causes this mismatch and what can be done to
improve the status quo?
The students and faculty of DTU have been working in
synergy to produce scientifically sound research, but the
mismatch, as you said, still exists. One of the primary
reasons for it is that the present population of the
university is around 14,000, and a vast majority of them
are undergraduate students. Due to the lower number
of students pursuing Masters and PhD, the research
culture hasn’t flourished extensively. Nonetheless, around
70 students were awarded a PhD degree last year and
this time, even amidst the pandemic, 60 students were
conferred with a PhD.
To encourage students to take up research, DTU has
started various schemes and grants ranging from ₹1 lakh
to ₹5 lakhs. These awards are meant to inspire students to
come up with research ideas worthy of being published in
reputed international journals. Additionally, for students
who are interested in pursuing research and wish to be
internationally acclaimed for their work, these grants
will aid them in their journey, by amalgamating both
academics and research. This would also help the students
gain financial independence as they pursue their research
interests.
We are also integrating research into the curriculum of
undergraduate students. We must play to our key strength,
which is the sheer number of undergraduate students, and
in order to encourage them to adopt the research culture,
the faculty must involve them in as many projects as
possible. DTU-IIF is also doing their part to encourage
the students and faculty members to work on startups. The
university provides up to ₹10 lakhs in incentives to the
students for this. We are also working on strengthening
our research labs and infrastructure and equipping them
with bleeding edge industrial softwares.
The students must avail schemes like these and should
approach the faculty for guidance. I think the undergrads
have the capability to publish better papers than the
PhD scholars because there isn’t any pressure on them to
complete their work in a given frame of time. Free minds
have no bounds, and have endless potential to realise.
Pursuing research would also help the students gain
practical knowledge, which will in turn give them an edge
over others during the placement season. Industries today
are looking for people who don’t fit the mould, who can
apply their skills practically and think out-of-the-box. This
would also aid students who wish to pursue their graduate
studies in universities outside India.
Leading educational institutions around the world have
conducted studies which underscore the same fact: inperson
classes are more productive than online ones. Is
there any plan to reopen the university to all students for
theory classes, or is there a blended mode of education in
the works?
We are trying our best to resume educational activities
in the offline mode, because I believe that the campus
provides a congenial atmosphere for learning. But we are
waiting till the end of December for the government’s
orders, which will be based on an evaluation of the impact
of Omicron.
The present plan is to conduct practical classes in person.
Apart from that, we are also working on inviting renowned
professors from leading international universities to
present lectures in their domains which would allow the
students to receive a diverse exposure of learning and
enhance networking. We are also working on a hybrid
mode of teaching. This method will entail classrooms
retrofitted with microphones, cameras, virtual boards, and
networking capabilities. On the surface, it might seem like
an ordinary classroom, but in reality, these classrooms will
combine the best of both worlds: professors can present
lectures from anywhere while if a student is unable to
attend any class, they can tune in online. This has already
been implemented in NSUT and now we are working to
incorporate it in DTU as well.
Do you think that hybrid classrooms are the future?
Definitely. I don’t think that physical classes will be
completely phased out, but there will certainly be a push
to make sure that no one misses out on their education
simply because of their physical absence. This is also
true for the faculty members. If a teacher cannot attend
a physical class, then they can present lectures from their
location and everything will be properly displayed in
the classroom. Both the teacher and student will have
this freedom. Furthermore, the podium is also built
in with writing units. So that if a teacher writes on it, it
automatically displays on the classroom’s digital board.
Each classroom has its own YouTube channel where these
lectures are live-streamed. This lets students access them
anywhere and at any time. At present, twelve classrooms
have been inducted into the first phase of this change. We
hope to revolutionise the conventional modus operandi of
physical classes with these futuristic classrooms.
What is your vision for DTU?
My vision for DTU is to implement short term goals
in order to make instrumental differences in the long
run. We have gotten a lot of things right along the way,
while there are areas we can improve on. I don’t intend
to upend the way things are conducted here. I believe it
is imperative that we maintain our path, while making
small modifications that will steer us in the appropriate
direction. In the coming years, DTU will implement every
facet of the NEP, which will place us as an elite institution
catering to students from all domains. Additionally, I
will ensure that we keep improving the status-quo, by
constantly refreshing the curricula and encouraging
technical and cognitive development of students. I intend
to imbue the university with the principles and values of
historic Indian institutions such as Nalanda and Takshila.
What message would you give to the students of DTU?
Never stop following your dreams. Always give your one
hundred percent and work hard towards achieving your
goal. In life, you will always receive more opportunities,
so make the most of them. Furthermore, move out of
your comfort zones, push your limits and try to do
something innovative and distinct in your chosen fields.
Most importantly, always be grateful for your culture,
your country and your family; other tangible things are
ephemeral.

THE LEGO SET
I NEVER HAD
Ananya Kapoor, 3 rd Year, EE
Riya Singh, 2 nd Year, MCE
As I was growing up, I could never forget that I am a female, with the distinction between men and women becoming even sharper
as I grew older. This subtle demarcation between ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’, so common in countless households just like mine,
ends up having far more dangerous consequences, the most menacing being its manifestation as a lack of inclusivity in several key
areas of our lives.
If I were to turn back the clock to where it all started, one significant difference existed even between little girls and boys—birthday
gifts. These gifts are the reason that I never feel that I’m smart enough for my highly technical degree. I loved the Barbie dolls,
the pink dresses, and the kitchen sets that I got as a child. However, in hindsight, I wish that all my birthday presents hadn’t been
restricted to being traditionally ‘girly’.
Don’t get me wrong—I do count my blessings and all. However, I realize now that a significant part of what shaped my identity as a
child was what I did as I grew up. I dressed up my dolls; I wore pink and made chai with my kitchen set. Now that I think of it, there
is only one gift that I wish someone would’ve given me—lego sets.
You might be wondering—what do lego sets have to do with our current discourse on inclusivity? Lego sets are often the earliest
encounter a child has with textbook engineering. Building things with tiny blocks is how they develop an interest in constructing
things out of their mind and depending on their creativity. In keeping these away from girls and presenting them only with dolls and
kitchen sets, we propagate the idea that a woman’s role is primarily to care and nurture to exclude everything else. On the other
hand, boys are encouraged to think, ideate, and create—their intelligence is applauded more than their looks and mannerisms.
It should hardly come as a surprise then if young girls in engineering colleges don’t think they can compete with boys their age. I
have always lacked the confidence to complete a practical lab in physics or mechanical without taking the help of a boy because
I grew up thinking they are naturally better at it. The bigger consequence of these streamlined pink gifts is that the number of
women employed in intellectually demanding fields like science and technology remains abysmally low. One can find a perfect
example in our university itself, where hardly any girls choose a branch like mechanical engineering, no matter how fascinating it
may be, due to its heavy emphasis on fieldwork.
Over the years, I have often wondered how differently things would have turned out had society deemed it fit to applaud me for
all my successful endeavors, no matter how ‘unladylike’ they might be. I also wonder if I would have believed in myself more had
my triumphs and failures not been viewed through the narrow lens of gender but instead as a natural consequence of my abilities
and weaknesses.
I still take heart, however, in knowing that things are changing through it all. As more and more women blaze a trail of accomplishment
in their respective fields, the conversation on representation and inclusivity has dominated both newspaper headlines and dinner
table discussions over the past few years. Though these victories are significant, there is still a long way to go. We can only achieve
the goal of equal representation if every family gives their girls space to fulfill their desires without fear of censure and disapproval.
I, personally, look forward to the day when sets of lego blocks and remote-controlled cars jostle for space with dainty tea sets on
a young girl’s shelf of toys, a time when her mind is unencumbered by the burdens of convention.

GOOGLE, LONDON
DTU Times interviewed Rishabh Singh, COE, Class of 2021, who got placed at Google,
London as a Software Engineer.
How did you go about deciding to apply for this
position? What are the factors that you considered
before applying?
The primary factors which I consider while applying
for a position are the reputation of the company,
benefits and pay for that particular position, the
work culture and most importantly, if that role aligns
with my future goals. In my case, Google ticked off all
these boxes. The position I applied for also aligned
with my future goals.
How do you feel the four years at DTU shaped your
career? What impact did your college journey carry
while you secured this position?
The four years at DTU were a life changing period.
The most important thing DTU gives you is the peer
group competition and the most amazing seniors.
The right guidance at the right moment has shaped
my path for this accomplishment. I chose the path
that was needed to realise this dream and what
helped me choose that path was my inner will to
succeed and the external guidance and inspiration
from great college seniors. Apart from the academic
benefits, I loved the DTU campus so much. DTU even
provided me with a ton of recreational activities that
helped me relax.
In what terms is the process of applying for
international job opportunities characteristically
different from applying for the same positions in
India?
There’s not much difference when it comes to just
applying as it is very similar for both the cases.
The only difference is in the probability of your
profile being shortlisted for the interviews as it is
significantly lower for international opportunities,
with the chances of receiving an offer being even
lesser. You need to have a very good profile in order
to get opportunities outside India.
What parts of the applications would you say matter
the most while applying for this role? Do grades
or your competitive programming profile play a
relevant part as well?
The most important things that mattered to me
while applying for this role were finding someone to
refer me for the role and having a great resume while
applying. My competitive programming experience
definitely played a key role while applying to
Google as it is one of those companies that value
competitive programming a lot. If you are good at
competitive programming, they want to see you
working at their office.
What piece of advice would you like to give students
who are a bit confused about their future career
options?
For a good placement in software engineering, my
advice would be to start working on both coding and
job-hunting skills at the earliest. While students often
overlook the latter, it is more crucial to success. Don’t
be shy or introverted when it comes to job hunting.
Many people go for higher studies which can also
be a great career opportunity. Just decide what you
want to do as soon as possible in your college time.
Moreover, never doubt the opportunities that DTU
brings to you. Finally, I would like to stress upon the
importance of surrounding yourself with people with
similar goals.
