New Joiners 22
Assalamualaikum and Warmest Greetings,
Brunei LNG is a top quartile organisation - an industry
icon that has set many parameters and benchmarks
in the industry. However, like any forward looking
company, we should not be complacent. Competitors
are evolving and catching up fast. And we too, have to
work towards continuous improvements.
Looking at our current positioning:
- Our laboratory is ranked the best in Shell for
6th consecutive years - and have been proven as real pockets of
excellence.
- We practise safe operations with excellent safety track records –but
there had been close calls of concerns
- We are a profi table organisation with robust fi nancials and a ready
energy market but the energy demand is dependent on the world
economy
- We have a technically competent workforce but many experienced
staff are retiring and we are investing in human capital
- We are investing in projects to rejuvenate our plant but we do have
ageing infrastructure
- We are operationally safe and successful with supportive shareholders
Today we are competing with new state of the art LNG plants globally. We
have asset integrity challenges requiring urgent and constant attention. Th e
question is “How do we sustain all the above operational excellence that we
have achieved for more than 40 years of operation?”
Unity and foresightedness are the key. Together – if we work together – the
management team, employees, contractors, suppliers and all stakeholders,
Brunei LNG can certainly have a greater future. Take time to see where we
are today and where we are heading tomorrow.
We need to improve beyond our current success if we want to be ahead of
the competition and stay relevant as we move into our next 20 years aft er
2013. Let’s all do it! Make forward thinking our “License to Operate” (LTO)
requirement. Th is is our opportunity to make the change before events force
us to make changes.
In order to excel into the future, Brunei LNG needs to adapt changes in
the workforce expectations and the market . We have set up various teams
and recruit more resources that handle increased project delivery, address
infrastructure integrity rejuvenation works, strengthen the Maintenance
team and introduced tools that hopefully will make work execution and
verifi cation easier and less burden.
New players in the market that are highly competitive and effi cient have
emerged. Concurrently, there are new sets of more stringent rules, increasing
shareholders and stakeholders expectations, who seek greater transparency
and demand us to demonstrate assurance of technical integrity and
operational excellence.
Any change management will always be diffi cult. Th ere will be sceptics and
non-believers. , but all of us are in this together. Moving forward is going
to be a marathon and not a sprint. We are embarking on behavioural and
cultural changes. It is much easier to change a piece of equipment than a
change of habit, but together, we can do it!
Act now and lets rediscover the pride and work ethics that made Brunei
LNG a great company. Let’s do something today to ensure that we all move
’Together For A Better Future .’
Gentle reminder: Th is is our Plant , our Workplace and our Livelihood.
activities and to help improve plant availability and reliability in terms of loading
cargo. Originally the installation comprised of three Marine Loading Arms (MLA’s)
installed on the new loading jetty, constructed in 1993.
Th e requirement to overhaul the in service arms, as well as providing an installed
spare resulted in the decision to initiate the 4th Loading Arm Project. Th e scope
of the project was to supply and install an additional loading arm, integrate the
new equipment into existing infrastructure, whilst providing a disruption free and
seamless transition for operations.
Th e project was challenging for the team, requiring execution in an off shore
environment with logistic and transport limitations, whilst maintaining normal
loading operations. Berth occupancy is high with over 210 B class cargoes loaded each
year, requiring planning and coordination to complete the required work activities in
The New Operation
Training Simulator
On 30th September, the Operation Department at Brunei LNG
reached a signifi cant milestone with the successful launching
of the Operator Training Simulator( OTS ). Th e event in the
control room (CCR) was offi cially launched by the Head of
Operation (OPS) Hj Kamis Kassim and highlighted with a
blessing prayer.
Th e project to provide the state of the art training platform
started in October 2010. Th e inevitable “crew change”
in Brunei LNG had ignited the need to have this training
platform. Th is is one of the many ways to enhance and sustain
the technical competencies of the operators, in preparation
for the departure of the experience staff . Moreover, with the
concept of ESP (Ensure Safe Production) being implemented
across Shell establishment, it is timely indeed to have the
simulator to complement the existing training methods to
enable new learning discoveries and make a diff erence in
fostering stronger collaboration in the training of panel man.
Further, the provision of this state- of- the- art simulator
added a new dimension to training and with new boundaries.
6
By George Wong (HCD/3)
Th e basic concept of the simulator is a
real time dynamic process based called
Dynamism, a rigorous and high fi delity
mathematical process model to provide a
realistic dynamic response of our plant. Th e
model is a virtual replica of our Operation
with the same look and feel. It is subjected
to the same hydraulic responses, heat
transfers and mass balances, and also aligns
with the Foxboro DCS (Distributed Control
System) process operating constraints.
Currently, the simulator includes Boilers on the Utilities
model, with the Liquefaction trains and RMU (Refrigerant
Manufacturing Units) on the Process model. It allows one of
the two models to be simulated run at a time for the following
activities
1. Start up and shut down operations
2. Emergence shut down operation.
3. Trouble shooting and recovery from equipment
failures, process upsets and other malfunctions of our
plant experienced in the past.
4. Develop preset condition to give specifi c control
training to areas of need and monitoring of trainee’s
performance via the program.
Th e new training simulator is hoped to give an added
advantage to the new and existing operators, in supporting
the organisational eff ectiveness towards producing a skilled
and competent operators.
forget such blessings.
Sheikh Ali Jaber also shared that ‘Iman’ and ‘Takwa’ can
come in the form of doing simple-good-deeds without the
acknowledgement of others, for instance performing late
night prayers without spouse acknowledgement or giving out
‘sedaqah’ without others knowing. As a fi nal note, Sheikh Ali
Jaber advised everyone to appreciate Allah’s blessings bestowed
upon Brunei.
You belong to one of four generations of workers. Do
you know how to work effectively with the other three
generations in the workplace? Many workplace experts have
noted that for the first time in history four generations -
different in many respects – are present in today’s workplace.
The youngest of these generations is Generation Y, often
called Millennials. They come to the workplace armed with
technology and communication tools to an unprecedented
degree.
How can you communicate and work effectively with these
various generations? This is one of the hottest workplace
issues in today’s organization. We will offer articles covering
the various aspects of this issue. Below is some of the ways
to manage Generation Y.
Capitalize on their Social Orientation and team-
preference.
Millennials like to be in constant touch with others, as they
have been the key users of Instant Messaging, and sites like
MySpace, Facebook, and other social media. So you need
to create work opportunities that allow them to be involved
through teams and collaborative work.
Capitalize on their technology-orientation.
Millennials are adept at using the internet and computer
programs, conducting Internet research using Google,
and communicating with their BlackBerry, cell phones,
and whatever other tools that might appear on the market.
Managing them effectively means that their boss will at
least be familiar with these tools and preferably use some
of them.
Make use of their Multitasking.
They also tend to be good at multitasking and can talk on
the phone while checking e-mail and answering instant
messages. Provide them with opportunities to do this to
minimize their boredom on the one hand and increase
productivity on the other.
Four Generations at Work:
How to Manage Generation Y
Welcome their diversity.
Millennials not just understand diversity but actually live it
and practice it in a natural and almost automatic fashion.
This is the generation that got excited about Barak Obama,
an African American with a white mother, a Muslim black
father from Kenya, who offered a vision of change and hope.
Make sure your organization practices and values diversity
and offers them a work culture that celebrates it in a natural
way.
Give them interesting work.
One of the key attributes of Gen Y is their need for constant
stimulation. The worst task for them is the boring one.
What makes work boring is when the person doesn’t have
a say in it. Give them opportunities to create themselves
through their jobs. Give them as much freedom as possible
and involve them in job design and decisions. Otherwise
they might hop from one job to another searching for what
stimulates them.
Listen to them.
Millennials want to have their voices heard. They have grown
used to provide comments on blogs and other social media.
They expect to have opportunities to voice their opinion
and not get punished for it if different or uncommon.
Conclusion.
Millennials will increasingly become a larger segment of the
workforce. With the right training and wise leadership, they
can be great assets to the organization.
