How did a British blues band turn into aCalifornia rock outfit that created one ofthe best-selling albums of all time? In themid sixties, Peter Green was consideredone of British rock’s most esteemed guitarists,lauded by the likes of Jimmy Pageand David Gilmour. He was a member ofJohn Mayall and The Bluesbreakers, thechanging line-ups of which read like a‘Who’s Who’ of British bluesy-rock.Welch eventually resigned but thisopened the door to a gorgeous lookingand phenomenally talented couple whowould help take the band to unforeseenheights, Lindsey Buckingham and StevieNicks. Stevie recently relayed the story ofwhy she and Lindsey ultimately decidedto join Fleetwood Mac despite the problemsthey were alreadyhaving with their relationship.I made Lindsey listen toall the Fleetwood Mac records.And I said, “I thinkwe can do something forthis band. We’ll do it fora year, save some moneyand if we don’t like it, we’llquit.” And he’s like, “ButBuckingham Nicks, I still think the record’sgoing to start to break out.” I said, “Youwait around. I’m sick of being a waitress.We are joining Fleetwood Mac and we’regoing to be great.’In 1975, the new ‘Golden Era’ line-updebuted with the self-titled album ‘FleetwoodMac’ and this was a breakthroughas it became a US Number One. It includedstill classic singles ‘Rhiannon’ and‘Landslide’ and Christine McVie’s ‘OverMy Head’ and ‘Say You Love Me’. This new“Devastationleads to writinggood things.”sun-tinged pop catapulted Fleetwood Macinto new realms of success.The pressure was now on for their next albumto be a massive success. The stage wasset for rock’s greatest soap opera.After eight years of marriage, Christine andJohn McVie were getting divorced due tothe constant touring and John’s alcoholabuse. John relayed in an interview, “You gotthe pressures of being on the road for a startand living together and seeing everybody attheir best and their worst. And with Chris shesaw me at my worst one too many times, andbless her heart, she said, ‘Enough is enough.I don’t want to be around this person.’ Butat the bottom of all the stuff we have somethingmusically we can achieve.” The twoavoided on another and didn’t speak unlessthey had something musicalto discuss.Great music often comesfrom heartbreak, emotionalturmoil and living on theedge. In the words of Stevie,“Devastation leads to writinggood things.” Lucky for usthey made their embitteredbattles with one another intogreat songs that will live forever.To record, they left Los Angeles to getaway from the record company, attorney andall of the other business demands. They sequesteredthemselves in a windowless studioin Sausalito, California. Their isolationalong with the copious amounts of alcoholand Bolivian marching powder on handdid not make for good relations. Nicks recalled,“We wondered whether we wouldget through ‘Rumours’. In that tiny little roomthere were five people that were totallybreaking up.”
