EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Supporters,
I am sure that when Wendell Berry wrote these
words, he wasn’t foreseeing a global pandemic.
However, in the face of Covid-19 and its
reverberations throughout Kentucky and the
world, the quote seems strangely applicable. Certainly, the past year and a half has
presented us all with many challenges. Our proverbial streams have been impeded and
many times we have not known what to do or which way to go. As such, we have
collectively been going through individual, community, and organizational journeys of
self-discovery. And yet, throughout the heartache and strife, we see instances of
beautiful songs made with individuals and communities coming together in local support
of each other.
2020 marked the 25th Anniversary of Bluegrass Land Conservancy (BLC). The year was
primed to be full of celebrations for our community to highlight a remarkable set of
accomplishments in land conservation, but, with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, our
stream was impeded. We, like so many others, cancelled our events and were left feeling
unsure about how to proceed.
At BLC, we believe that land conservation is important every day, but think it especially so
at a time when so many people have been turning to local resources, including fresh food,
farm products, and local access to nature. We learned over the past year and a half that
our donors and supporters feel so too. Thanks to overwhelming community support, BLC
was able to raise funds in line with previous years, allowing us to continue our focus on
mission-driven work.
Community response to BLC hasn’t stopped with monetary donations. Much to our
surprise and delight, we continue to receive almost weekly inquiries from landowners
and have more active projects than ever before, with over 20 active projects
on more than 5,000 acres. Covid-19 presented an opportunity for landowners
to slow down, spend time with family, and think about the future. The result being
that more Bluegrass landowners are seeing the benefits of conserving their land
in perpetuity. The impeded stream is singing.
We hope that you enjoy this organizational update and our 2020-2021 Impact
Report. Thank you for your commitment to protecting this unique place that many
of us call home. Your donations and continued support allow BLC to continue to
sing —making sure future generations have access to clean water, healthy soils, fresh
air, and open spaces.
Warmly,
Jessie Wilder
“It may be that when we no longer know what to do,
we have come to our real work
and when we no longer know which way to go,
we have begun our real journey.
The mind that is not baffled is not employed.
The impeded stream is the one that sings.”
– Wendell Berry
LAND PROTECTION
Conserving Farms & Natural Lands
With a goal to permanently protect and steward lands critical to agricultural viability and
community character in the Bluegrass region, Bluegrass Land Conservancy works on a daily basis
with landowners across the region to conserve land through voluntary conservation easements.
Recognized by the World Monument Fund (WMF) as “one of America’s most distinctive landscapes”
for its world-class soils, iconic farms, and abundant water resources, the Bluegrass region was
unfortunately also named to the WMF Watch List as one of the world’s 100 most endangered sites due
to the increasing amount of acreage lost to development yearly. The very land that defines and
supports our region, allowing for and sustaining the equine industry, bourbon industry, tourism, local
food, outdoor recreation, clean air, and fresh water is being broken up and developed at an alarming
pace. With one of the highest rates of farmland loss in the country, Kentucky has lost nearly 800,000
acres of land in the last two decades.
Over the past 25 years, Bluegrass Land Conservancy has saved nearly 30,000 of our most critical
acres from future development. These lands will remain open for agricultural uses and natural habitat
in perpetuity. We still have plenty of work to do to combat the rapid pace of development! We need
your help to increase the pace of conservation before it is too late.
Is a conservation easement right for you and your family?
Every family is unique and so are their farm conservation plans.
We welcome all inquiries, and all conversations are confidential. To discuss the benefits
associated with protecting your land and what will work best for you and your family, contact:
ORGANIZATIONAL
SUSTAINABILITY
Bluegrass Land Conservancy is committed to our promise of perpetuity through the sustainable and
measurable management of our financial resources. With a goal to grow our financial and
organizational capacity to ensure our commitment to perpetuity and to meet dynamic
conservation goals, we perform our work with a community and growth-oriented mindset. We
know that every conservation easement is a forever promise for future generations, and therefore we
are driven every day to ensure the funds and organizational structure needed to fulfill that pledge.
In addition to annual operating funds, BLC works to grow a robust Operating Endowment and
Stewardship Fund to safeguard our conservation easements forever.
With over 25 years of experience and nearly 30,000 acres of land protected, BLC is the most
accomplished regional, nonprofit land trust in Kentucky working in conservation easements. The
collective expertise on our Board and staff represents the majority of land conserved in Kentucky.
Protecting an average of over 1,300 acres per year, BLC ranks in the top 5% of accredited land
trusts in the country in land conserved per year by staff size. We need your help to continue to
grow our organization and staff in order to maintain and increase the pace of land conservation
in the Bluegrass.
As a community-supported land trust, we rely upon the generous contributions of individuals,
businesses, and grantors as we work to preserve our Bluegrass lands. Every dollar donated to BLC
helps to further our mission-directed programming. There are multiple opportunities to support
BLC—through direct gifts of cash, stock, real estate, auction items, workplace matching funds, planned
gifts, and corporate partnerships. With your continued support, our conservation work will continue
to play a vital role in our region’s quality of life, economic growth, and healthy environment.
BEQUESTS
Providing Impact & Peace of Mind
For many BLC supporters, a bequest is the most direct and impactful way to give, no matter
how large or small. A bequest is invaluable to BLC’s growth and stability, and ensures that
BLC will continue to protect and always care for the Bluegrass. For more information on
bequests and other planned giving options please contact:
THE SPEED MUSEUM:
“Tales from the Turf:
The Kentucky Horse 1825-1950”
In February of 2020, BLC kicked off our 25th Anniversary by
hosting a private event and gallery talk. This exhibition was the
first to examine Kentucky’s relationship to the horse through art.
Tales from the Turf featured paintings, sculptures, photographs,
drawings, prints, and manuscripts telling the story of the horse in
the Bluegrass State. The exhibition reflected all the ways that equine
art has represented the Commonwealth’s identity, history, mythology, and
agricultural economy, from its earliest days through the mid-twentieth century.
SUMMER SOLSTICE
Creek Cleanup
We spent the summer solstice
showing Mama Earth some love!
Can’d Aid and Bluegrass Land
Conservancy met at Switzer Covered
Bridge in an effort to clean up and
help beautify North Elkhorn Creek.
We celebrated our hard work by
swimming, paddling, and floating
along the creek! We walked the
newly launched Switzer
Family Farm and learned
about the vision to build
an on-site community
space for do-goodery,
music and more!
EVENTS
VIRTUAL AUCTION
BLC 25th Anniversary
We celebrated our 25th Anniversary in 2020 with
our first-ever Virtual Auction from September 23-30.
Our supporters bid on unique Kentucky experiences,
special bourbons, equine art, and jewelry. Together,
we exceeded our goal and raised $112,000 to
support BLC’s mission to preserve the scenic farmland
and natural resources that define our region.
BLC & BOURBON BURN
Bottle Release Party
BLC and Bourbon Burn hosted a socially-distanced
specialty bottle release at Bluegrass Distillers in October
of 2020! BLC and Bourbon Burn staff members had a blast
hand-selecting a single barrel wheated bourbon. Bourbon
lovers were able to reserve bottles online and pick them
up at the Bluegrass Distillers. $20 of every bottle sold went
towards helping BLC protect land in the Bluegrass forever.
EDUCATION & OUTREACH
“In the end we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we
understand, and we will understand only what we are taught” – Baba Dioum
While this quote from Baba Dioum gets used a lot in the conservation world, the truth that it speaks is
especially valid for land conservation. Our work at Bluegrass Land Conservancy can go largely
unseen by most people, yet it ensures the future of many amenities we care about and love. Robust
local farmers markets, beautiful scenic drives, outdoor recreational spaces, thriving bourbon distilleries,
and community access to equine sports and farmland are just a few of the many benefits of
land conservation in the Bluegrass. Additionally, land conservation helps to ensure less polluted air,
healthy soils, clean waterways, and available farmland for ourselves as well as future generations.
At Bluegrass Land Conservancy, we seek to elevate the importance of land as a part of our
regional identity, and land conservation as a priority for maintaining a high quality of life
and a vibrant economy. We work to educate landowners and citizens about the importance of
land conservation, both for themselves and for the entire Bluegrass region. By helping people
understand how land conservation benefits each and every one of us, and is key to so many issues
that are close to our hearts, we hope to cultivate a passion for conservation within our broader
community. Help us engage with citizens across the Bluegrass today by hosting a BLC event,
following us to social media, signing up for our Enews, or spreading the word about the benefits
of land conservation!
Bluegrass Land Conservancy protects land in Kentucky’s Bluegrass region through
permanent conservation easements. We seek to ensure a future where the region’s
distinctive soils, cultural heritage, scenic vistas, natural resources, and farms are
preserved forever. As a nationally accredited, community supported, 501(c)(3)
nonprofit land trust, we work on a voluntary basis with landowners, community groups,
and municipalities to encourage the preservation of land for agricultural viability,
natural habitat, rural heritage, and scenic open space.
