ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
We would like to express our gratitude
to our tutors Ms. Vaibhavi Kowshik,
Mrs. Shilpi Burman and Mr. Yaman for
guiding us through the journey of this
wonderful experience design project,
we came to know about so many new
things and terms related to our topic.
We would also like to thank our parents
and friends who helped us a lot in
finalizing this project within the limited
time frame.
EXERCISE 1
GOOD AND BAD EXPERIENCE -
In our experience design module, our
first assignment was to share one
Good and Bad experience of our life.
The good experience obviously
gave us some good tears of good
memories and some nostalgic feels
and the bad one’s reminded use that
can fight over the bad things and
move on in our life, over all the whole
experience of sharing our experience
was fun, telling our stories and listen
to other peoples stories their high
and low times , laughing and smile
on everyone’s good experiences and
giving them strength while they
shared their bad experiences.
ABHIMANYU’S EXPERIENCES -
The good experience that I have is
not a single event but a bracket of
time, of somewhere about 4-5 years
in hostel. Hostel life was the most
amazing thing that could happen to
me, being around friends all the time
and doing every thing imaginable
together creating a bond that still
exists.
The bad experience that I’d be able
to share will be the one during
which, I felt hopeless and almost
everything felt pointless because I
had dropped out of engineering the
judgement that was being passed
on by my family members and other
people, that was one of times I felt
the lowest.
ARUSHI’S EXPERIENCES -
Good experience - Going to America
for a month for student exchange
program. Enjoying the place without
my parents and just my friends.
Everyday going to new places and
eating new dishes , meeting new
people every day making a great
bond with them . My childhood
dream of visiting Disney Land came
true. The new learning’s and living
alone and managing things was one
of my greatest and most learned
time of my life .
Bad experience – The time phase
when i had a nanny to look after
me in class 3rd and 4th , she use to
torture me , never use to give me
food use to beat me , make me cry
and scare me if I told her that I will
tell my mom about the torture she
did with me . That was one of the
most difficult time for me as a kid.
But it ended soon my mom got to
know about it, and she then was
removed from the job.
EXERCISE 2
To explain us what is hook the
second assignment of the module
was we had to share one of our
experience of some place we went to
visit using Hook.
But before that what is HOOK?
Trigger -“A trigger is the actuator
of behaviour—the spark plug in the
engine. Triggers come in two types:
external and internal.”
Action - “Following the trigger comes
the action: the behaviour done in
anticipation of a reward.”
Variable Reward - “Introducing
variability multiplies the effect,
creating a focused state, which
suppresses the areas of the brain
associated with judgment and reason
while activating the parts associated
with wanting and desire.” The driving
factor to make people use/visit again
and again comes when the brain is
expecting a reward.
Investment - The investment occurs
when the user puts something into
the product of service such as time,
data, effort, social capital, or money.
However, the investment phase isn’t
about users opening up their wallets
and moving on with their day. Rather,
the investment implies an action that
improves the service for the next
go-around. Inviting friends, stating
preferences, building virtual assets,
and learning to use new features
are all investments users make to
improve their experience.” (Excerpt
From: Nir Eyal. “Hooked.” 2013.)
ARUSHI’S HOOK
Trigger – My family was planning our
trip to Dubai for the winter vacation,
as we were doing the bookings my
dad told me to look for places to visit
in Dubai, to help me in this Google
baba helped me I searched for top 10
must visit places in Dubai I found out
the global village I loved the pictures
they showed on the site the whole
concept of the global village , and
the site of global village the pictures
and the whole concept of global
village made me trigger to go and
visit the place.
Action – As I loved the place and I
wanted to visit it the next step to this
was I told my day to book a tour and
buys tickets for this place.
Variable Reward – We went there
enjoyed a lot , had great fun with my
family , ate a lot , shopped a lot the
whole trip to the global village was
great.
Investment - Global Village is to
be the world’s largest tourism,
leisure, shopping and entertainment
project. It is the region’s first cultural,
entertainment, family and shopping
destination showing different
countries culture , food , dress and
everything about that place. As my
dad loved the setup of Maldives,
he decided to go this summer to
Maldives for a vacation.
ABHIMANYU’S HOOK
Trigger - Being a part of the
dramatics society we had to
participate in a competition and
go to Mumbai for Mood Indigo, IIT
Bombay’s annual fest. I got to know
about it through my seniors and
head of the society. Later on while
searching for the past competitions
online I found out that the event it
the largest college fest in Asia.
Action - All of the members had to
book their tickets for Mumbai, so the
action that was taken was to book
my tickets to go to mumbai and
apply for Mood Indigo.
Variable Reward - Mood Indigo
turned out to be one hell of an
experience for me, I had a lot of fun
over there and we won the Mime
time competition over there, hyping
us even more.
Investment - The following year
with the responsibilities of being the
badge holding batch my team and
I told about the competitions and
the experiences we had over there
so that we could get them hyped up
and take them there so they could
experience the same thing. Later in
the year we did take them to Mood
Indigo and they had their share of
fun over there. Trigger – I was always
interested in museum and to know
about the history of things .Indira
Gandhi as she was one of the most
powerful female personality and was
EXERCISE 3
ARUSHI’S HOOK
Trigger – I was always interested
in museum and to know about the
history of things .Indira Gandhi as she
was one of the most powerful female
personality and was the first and, to
date, the only female Prime Minister
of India. I was curious to know about
her life and how she gathered the
strength to take so big decision like
State of Emergency, Operation Blue
Star. I was lucky enough to find a
museum in Delhi telling about the
life of Indira Gandhi -Indira Gandhi
Memorial Museum. The best place to
know about Indira Gandhi, history of
freedom.
Action – The time I got to know
about Indira Gandhi Memorial
Museum my next step was to go
there. See where the museum is
located in Delhi and go and visit it
Investment – I searched the location
of Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum
bought the ticket and enjoyed the
walk in Indira Gandhi Memorial
Museum.
Reward- Going to Indira Gandhi
Memorial Museum was really a
good experience , I got to know so
much about Indira Gandhi from her
childhood to her teenage years to
how she entered politics , to her
relation with her father and her kids
. What inspired her to be a politician
, how she felt about being the first
lady prime minister . there was a
room which had all the gifts she
received from different countries,
a whole section was dedicated to
new paper articles about her . it’s
the perfect place to know what the
history of Indira Gandhi .

ABHIMANYU’S HOOK
Trigger - While going through my
Instagram feed, I realized that most
of the designers/artists/musicians/
design studios I followed were
continuously posting updates about
something called the Irregulars Art
Fair. They were continuously posting
about the people who are gonna be
the, people who would be putting
up their work, where it will be and
what to expect. That is when I came
to know about the event and got
interested in it.
Action - After all of the hype that
I had experienced, it was about
time that I bought passes for the
event and go witness it for myself in
person.
Variable Reward - Exposure to new
ideas and techniques, inspiration
for work, networking, growth as an
artist.
Investment - Through the Irregulars
Art Fair I got to experience many
new tools and techniques that
could be used in the course with
ease, while researching about these
techniques and artists, I came across
some new people, turning out to
be a huge group of young creative
individuals you would find at every
fest or event like Irregulars, through
these individuals I get to know
about any and every event that
would potentially be interesting and
design/art oriented.

EXERCISE 4
The 4th assignment needed
us to identify some weird/
odd/uncomfortable spaces
around the campus of our
college in order for us to
know the entire place better
which in turn helped us have
a clearer picture as to which
space is best for our project.
Arushi’s Places
Space- These two
pillars are in between
the auditorium which
is in the basement.
Why- The two pillars
block the view of
people and acts
like a stopper in the
auditorium.
(Ghotekar, 2018)
(Ghotekar, 2018)
Space - this space is
in front of the canteen
foyer.
Why – For me this
place is very random
as it’s just a triangle in
the end of the wall.
(Ghotekar, 2018)
Space – This broken wall is in front of the washroom on the ground floor
Why – This wall to me is very weird as it just not finish and is in front of
the washroom not solving any purpose, very random to me.
Space - This open space is in front of the canteen.
(Ghotekar, 2018)
Why - The way to this space is very narrow, this space is not used
properly in fact it is not used at all, it is block with a block of grass.
Space - This triangle is in the
basement of the college.
Why - I find this place very
useless and weird as it just a
triangle in the end of a wall ,
which is not used for anything
and there is no space also to
use that place usefully.
(Ghotekar, 2018)
(Ghotekar, 2018)
Space – this empty in
beside the canteen.
Why – For me this
place is not used
properly , this is a
huge area where a lot
of things can be done.
Space- The space is In
front of the washroom
on every floor.
Why – for me this
space is not used
properly , it has a lot of
area which is not been
used properly
(Ghotekar, 2018)
(Ghotekar, 2018)
Space - this room with
triangles poping out of
it is on the first floor.
Why - these triangles
poping out of the
room always hits me
and has no use of it.
Space - These wired
poping out triangles
are present on 1, 2
floor.
(Ghotekar, 2018)
Why – I find these
triangles wired as they
are randomly poping
out of the wall.
(Ghotekar, 2018)
Abhimanyu’s Places
Space – This space is
in the basement.
Why - It’s a triangle
in the middle of the
corridor solving no
propose to the space.
Its just wired looking
place
(Krishna, 2018)
Space - This space is
in the basement near
the stationary staircase.
Why – It’s a waste
of space , it’s just an
empty space which
could have been
used to store or place
something
(Krishna, 2018)
Space - This space is
in the basement in
front of the IT office
Why - It’s a triangle in
front of the office and
I feel that it’s a waste
of space , they could
have used that space
in the office .
(Krishna, 2018)
Space - This space is
in the basement
Why – This L shaped
space is in the corner
of the corridor filled
with waste material
and junk . I feel this
space could have been
used in a better way
as it’s a huge space .
(Krishna, 2018)

Handsome Gorgeous
There is an empty wall in front
of the washrooms on all the
floors of our college and when
you are going to the washroom
it will take you a second or
two to see which the male
washroom is and which the
female washroom is. So as
there is an empty wall which
is not used at all I wanted to
work on washroom signage
.But in a different and fun way

ABHIMANYU’S
IDEAS
(Krishna, 2018)
This space is near the entry gate, this is supposed to be a 3d illusion painting,
which will only make sense if one looks at it from a certain angle. I used to
blinds as an x-ray sheet to show the hand of a designer.
(Krishna, 2018)
I used to blinds as an x-ray sheet to show the hand of a communications designer,
showing the struggle a designer has to face while working with their hand, as
opposed to the common misconception that they only work on their laptops.
(Krishna, 2018)
I used the iconic character Mario on the plain white wall, as kids we all have
played Mario and its joyful memory to all of us, making people start their day
with a positive vibe.
EXPLORATIONS
(Anon, 2018)
Idea 1:
WHY - we wanted to change people’s
mind set towards the worker and
make them realise their social
responsibility. While doing our
design research we came across a lot
of insights one of them was people
were not taking responsibility of
their duties like throwing things or
mess in the proper place. We came
across a lot of incidents where the
users in public washrooms threw
their tissues, pads , plastic waste in
the toilet pot or around it not in the
dustbin and while the cleaners use
to point it out to them they use to
deny and say it was not there duty.
To clean the mess the cleaners have
to put their hands inside the pot to
clean the washroom, the cleaners
have to clean things like pads, tissues
condom packets things which come
under personal hygiene and the
users should take care of it. So we
wanted to create a experience where
we make the users realise there
social responsibility and make them
feel what the works feel when they
have to pick mess created by the
users.
WHAT - we want to create a walk
through experience in which we
want to create a drainage pipe which
would be filled with dirty things likepads,
tissues, plastic material and
slime, paper, plastic bags, condom
packets, chips packet and etc. We
want the users to walk through the
pipe which is filled with dirty things
to sense how the works feel when
they have to put their hand inside
the pot to clean the mess and filth
the users make. Making them Realise
that it’s not easy to clean up and it
can be avoided by a simple step of
throwing things in the proper place.
HOW - Pearl students and Faculty.
(John Cogill, 2013)
Idea 2:
WHY – Public washrooms being our
topic we wanted to focus on personal
hygiene and look at the point of view
of the cleaners. It is important to
maintain Hygiene everywhere from
public washrooms or the classroom
to our houses. We want to highlight
the need of maintaining cleanliness
and would like to change people’s
view point. Maintaining the public
area clean is as much our duty as we
keep our private spaces like home
clean. Also we would like to show
the point of view of the cleaners as
to how they feel about picking up
things like tissues, pads etc , which
is primarily the duty of the user to
throw in the proper place. So we are
focussing on changing people’s point
of view towards the cleaner’s and
their role in maintaining cleanliness
in public area.
HOW/WHAT - Working on hygiene
and trying to create the awareness
among people to maintain
cleanliness . Things like throwing the
packets, tissues other waste material
in the dust bin. So as a group
we want to create a fun looking
attractive and interactive dustbin
or a mascot, which will have a fun
question written on it which will
have two sections which will have
the answers on it. The users have to
choose one answer amongst the two
sections and whichever answer they
chose they will have to throw their
waste material in that section . And
in the end all the waste which will be
collected would be used to create an
installation.
WHO - As we can expand this to
various area’s to public spaces like
malls , market places to offices . But
for now we would like to focus on
the pearl Noida students and faculty.
(Anon, 2015)
Idea 3:
WHY - Expanding on this we wanted
to work in your canteen as that place
is the dirties in our college people
leave their food plates , bottles and
plastic packets on the table and they
don’t pick it up and think the worker
will do it for them.
WHAT - We wanted to create fun
looking dust bin Mario themed so
that it will attract the users to go
and throw their trash in it. Using the
Mario game we would convert the
canteen into a Mario games using
the iconic music and the iconic Mario
game theme from the bricks to the
coin. Every time the users throw their
trash in the bin it will make the iconic
sound of Mario , which will make the
users relate to the game and also
attract them to throw their trash in
the bin.
WHO - As we can expand this to
various area’s to public spaces like
malls, market places to offices. But
for now we would like to focus on
the pearl Noida students and faculty.
(Anon, 2018)
Idea 4:
WHY - we wanted to change people’s
mind set towards the worker and
make them realise their social
responsibility. While doing our design
research we came across a lot of
insights one of them was people
were not taking responsibility of
their duties like throwing things or
mess in the proper place. We came
across a lot of incidents where the
users in public washrooms threw
their tissues, pads , plastic waste in
the toilet pot or around it not in the
dustbin and while the cleaners use
to point it out to them they use to
deny and say it was not there duty.
To clean the mess the cleaners have
to put their hands inside the pot to
clean the washroom, the cleaners
have to clean things like pads, tissues
condom packets things which come
under personal hygiene and the users
should take care of it. So we wanted
to create a experience where we
make the users realise there social
responsibility and make them feel
what the works feel when they have
to pick mess created by the users.
WHAT - creating a game which will
be divided into 2 levels the first level
will be for the users where the users
will be given a space where they
have to create mess and they will get
points on the biases of how much
mess they create, they will be given
materials like paper , plastic, slime,
water, pads, tissues and plastic bottle
and etc. The next level will be played
as cleaners , where they have to
clean all trash the users have created
and they will get points of the biases
of how much they clean the area
.with this we want them to realise
that it’s very easy to create mess but
very difficult to clean. We hope with
this experience they would realise
the pain the workers feel whiling
cleaning up.
WHO - As we can expand this to
various area’s to public spaces like
malls, market places to offices . But
for now we would like to focus on
the pearl Noida students and faculty.
(Ghotekar, 2018)
Our group welcomes you to PROJECT
SAFAI and the content of the entire
experience is derived from one of
our insights from our design research
module where we talked about how
in public washrooms people don’t
throw their trash in the dustbin and
throw in and around the pot, and
when they are told to throw their
trash in the dustbin the users take a
step back and tell the cleaners that
it’s their work. Something similar
happens at Pearl Academy, Noida, the
canteen users they don’t pick up their
trash like their used plastic bottles or
plates, they leave it on the table and
they don’t put the efforts of throwing
their trash in the dustbin.
We had begun with the idea of
making people realise their mistake
and how important is for them to be
equally responsible for keeping the
public spaces clean, with this thought
our brainchild the Stare came into
existance. As mentioned above the
canteen users don’t pick their trash
and leave it on the table. We went
around people who fit in the category
and recorded them while they leave
their belongings on the table, the
interesting part is, that while they are
leaving their trash the Abhimanyu
went to them and just stared at them
and the trash they left, pointing out
what they are leaving and make them
realise its their responsibiity to pick
the trash up, hoping the stare will
embarrass them and they will pick
their trash up.
Along with the stare we wanted the
users to experience feelings like -
uncomfortable, embarrassment,
conscious, noticed/looked down
upon and pin pointed.
With hopes that the people who are
experiencing it and the ones noticing
it feel bad about leaving their trash
and not throwing it in the dust bin,
start understanding their social
responsibility and hope that they
don’t repeat the act of not picking up
their trash and start taking their social
responsibilities seriously and consider
the work of the housekeeping staff
inside the college and ease their job
by taking small steps.
(Krishna, 2018)
(Ghotekar, 2018)
BEFORE
(Ghotekar, 2018)
AFTER
H O O K
Trigger:
While doing our research about
Public washroom in our design
research we came across a lot insight
and a question - What makes people
not use public washroom? Asking
people about it and collecting the
answer for this – we came across
that the main reason is the cleanness
in the public washroom and the
hygiene the public washrooms have.
But going deep into the research
we found that half of the mess is
created by the users only , throwing
there pads, tissues , packets etc , not
in the proper place and assuming
and having a mind-set that it’s the
work of the cleaner and they don’t
hold any duty to maintaining the
cleanness of a public area .
So what triggered us was that the
user not holding responsibility
Of their own dirty and mess they
created and have assumption that
its always the duty of the cleaner to
clean the area and never think what
the cleaner think about picking up
thinks like pads, tissues , leftover
food.
Action:
Our action to this was actually going
to more public washrooms around
Delhi and Public spaces and trying
to understand peoples view point
about their social duties and taking
interview of the cleaners about their
daily life and duty .And how they
feel about their work and peoples
responses when they are told to
clean their mess.
Investment:
Seeing the condition of public
washrooms and public areas, and
seeing people not talking social
responsibility. We thought of working
on changing people’s view point that
it’s our responsibility also and our
duty also to maintain the area clean.
With this we thought of working
in our college canteen where a
lot of students tend to leave their
plates, chips packet and bottle after
eating and not taking responsibility
of throwing it in the dustbin. We
wanted to make the students realise
that it’s their duty. With this concept
we thought of working on a social
experiment. In which we would go
around the canteen observe people
and go and stare when they are done
with their food and getting up of the
site without taking their plate of food
, we would just go to them stare at
them and then at their plate and go
with that flow un till the time they
don’t realise there mistake and their
responsibility.
Reward:
We are doing this social experiment
to change people’s view point
towards the workers and to make
them realise their responsibility
.So with this experiment we hope
to bring out a change in people’s
behaviour towards the works
and the understand their social
responsibilities.
(Krishna, 2018)
WHY?
While doing our research on public washrooms we came across
a lot of insights and a lot of issues why people don’t use public
washrooms. And the outcome to this came out because of
the hygiene the washroom has and zero cleanness around the
washrooms. But while doing our survey we realised that one of
the reason of public washrooms not been clean is because of
the users only as they don’t put the efforts to throw their waste
material like - tissues, pads, plastic bags and so much more to the
right place and expect the cleaners to clean everything. And not
taking responsibility of their own dirt and having a perspective
that it’s always the cleaner’s job to do it. So with this we wanted
the users to see the point of view of the cleaners how they feel
about cleaning things like pads, tissues, tampons plastic packets
or condom packets. Which should be the duty of the users to
throw it in a proper place rather than just assuming that the
cleaner will clean it, which might be taking these materials out
of the toilet pipe or around the commode. So in our experience
module we want to highlight the feeling of the cleaners how they
feel about picking up dirt and to show the users that they also
play a major part of making the public washroom or area clean.
WHAT?
For the experience we would like
to do a social experiment and make
a document and film of it. Being
in Pearl Academy and seeing the
college daily we went around the
campus and realised that canteen is
the most unclean/not-mainatined
space and the public washroom
insight of users not throwing their
pads, tissues in the proper place is
totally applicable to the canteen
area. A lot of the students don’t
throw their plates, trays bottle and
packets in the dust bin after eating.
So in your social experiment we want
to make people realise that it’s our
duty also to keep the area clean. And
not always relay on the cleaners to
clean the area.
(Ghotekar, 2018)
This is how we had layout the social
experiment.
Starting with going around the
campus and recording interview in
which we would be asking people
about general hygiene and what they
do, what they feel about cleanness in
our college, about cleaners and some
more questions.
The next thing we will do giving
gap after the interviews is place
cameras in the canteen area, this
social experiment will be conducted
by us. So while someone will be
eating their food in the canteen and
as soon as they will be finishing their
food only the people who we see
not putting their empty tray or plate
in the dust bin, one of us will go to
the person stray at them and then at
their plate and will do 2-4 with the
stray , I the hope the understand that
the eyes are pointing towards the
plate that the person is not throwing.
Depending on two action of the
person
1. They might throw the plate in the
dust bin and realise their mistake
(Ghotekar, 2018)
2. Or will not care about the stare
and their action of actually making
the place dirty
After this when the user/person will
come out of the canteen we would
ask them one simple question and
record their expression. What they
feel who is responsible to make the
canteen dirty. And then ending the
conversation by saying like how you
were doing by not putting your plate
in the dust bin.
(Ghotekar, 2018)
WHO?
The social experiment
took place in the
college, we were
tapping into the
students of Pearl
Academy, Noida
and members of the
faculty (if applicable).
Why was it not a setup like the other groups?
Is it important to have a set up to create an
experience? While working towards this social
experiment we had this thought about a hundred
times a week, do we really have to set up something
to be able to create an experience?
To get answers to these questions, with the help of
tutors and getting a deeper understanding of what
an experience is. An experience is not just by creating
a setup where people can walk in and experience
it. There are a lot different types of experiences –
Immersive theatre, VR, Exhibitions and also Social
Experiments. We can give away experiences through
pictures or through a set-up, by talking, making the
users see or listen to something. Upon understanding
this, we came to a realization that the experience
could be purely based out of memories as well, which
might help in changing public behaviour.
What was done to make people realize about the
campaign?
The information about this campaign/social
experiment was given out through the various
channels our group had to create anticipation in
people’s minds about what is about to happen. Those
existing channels being Social Media, Word of mouth,
a series of posters and involving more people into the
experiment once they had experienced it themselves.
The social media campaign was conducted in two
different formats, one of them was where the group
“Chautha Maala“ had made an event and we kept
on posting there and keeping the people interested
posted about what might happen on that day, the
other one being specifically to Project Safai, wherein
we generated content and posted it on Instagram
(considering the current social media scenario and
our target audience) and maintained a blog about the
day to day activitiesthat took place.
Your trash, Your responsibility,
Making you realise, Our duty.
(Krishna, 2018)
Along with the stare we activated other things as
well, including an Instagram handle, starting our
own hashtag through our Instagram page where
people who started to take social responsibility
and started to throw their trash in the bin clicked
there picture using the hashtag #khudkaro and
got featured on our Instagram page. Other
pictures that our Instagram has are about how
the canteen area has changed since the time we
started our project.
Also the things we started to write on our
blog where we talked about our journey from
explorations to our final project Talking about
the ideas about our different explorations and
what we wanted to cover and bring focus to.
We also have a film which has the whole project
documented from the stare to the interviews
about general cleanness and hygiene around them
and about their experience of being stared at.
OUR EXPERIENCE
Creating an experience in which you seek to change
people’s view point isn’t easy, it took us so much time to
think for a prefect idea to create experience and also to
change people’s view point of taking their social responsibilities
seriously. We started with a lot of ideas and did
a lot of brain storming started with creating a set up then
jumping on creating a game then to our final deliverable
which was of a social experiment.
The process wasn’t easy at all but thanks to our mentors
who helped us in creating this experience which helped
to change people’s view point and made them realise
their social responsibility and gave the users an experience
that they won’t forget, hopefully.
This social experiment also brought smile on the face of
the housekeeping employees as they shared their emotions
how they felt about Project Safai.
We are also happy to see the change in the canteen
where people have started to take responsibility of their
trash and have started to throw their trash on their own
and feeling grateful about works around them.
WE SEE YOU.
Do your part of keeping the college clean.
