achieve those goals. Without a
skills and creative abilities, sadly, not many can work on
their skills to attain greater fulfilment and better well being.
life, or both this year, we spoke to Bukola Ayinde, a lawyer
turned life coach, Storyteller and disability-inclusion and
achieve your goals this year. Pg 4-5.
FASHION
Ugo Monye Begins
2022 With Opulence
Collection
by - Yemisi Suleiman
Begining the year on a fresh note, Ace
designer Ugo Monye, again,
showcases his proficiency as the
eponymous label drops it’s first collection for
2022 titled Opulence.
The collection, inspired by three main
materials: pearls, aso-oke and velvet,
carefully and intrinsically used in the making
of the pieces, individually represent and
depict affluence, substance and luxury.
According to the creative director, Ugo
Monye, “I have used aso-oke and velvet
severally on previous designs and
collections. They have always been a staple
in my creative work and recently, I took a
keen liking to pearls for their uniqueness and
in the way they are. It’s amazing how it is
viewed as feminine in its essence but in
history, they were worn by royalty and given
as gifts to dignitaries.
“So for this collection, I needed a fusion of
all these three materials of opulence and
prestige to create magic. Showing also, that
all three can coexist without conflict by virtue
of what they depict, when worn, without the
fear of looking “too much” or “too extra”.
The designer chose pastel and earthy
tones to combine with the materials to create
the beautiful and artistic pieces, making the
collection a real work of art. Ugo Monye
added that warm tones remind him of ease
and effortless opulence. Given that these are
not colours or materials you would associate
with men or men’s clothing, the designer
noted that he needed to create something for
the eccentric man who has a taste of
understated luxury - Opulence.
INTERVIEW
Bukola Ayinde :
Coaching To Reinvent
Words By - Jemi Ekunkunbor
Bukola Ayinde is the CEO of Developing People & Ideas -D. P. I Services as well as the Founder, Diary
of a Special Needs Mum Initiative under P4:13 Foundation.
The author of six books including Naked and Not Ashamed, a forty day journal of her experience as
a special needs mum, she holds a Bachelor of Laws degree and a Master’s in Managerial Psychology.
Bukola, who started out as a litigation lawyer, went on to become a learning and development Consultant,
and worked respectively in Human Resources, Marketing and Legal departments of the Intercontinental
Bank and Access Bank, in Lagos, Nigeria.
The alumnus of the Fate Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme is today, a Life Coach, Storyteller,
disability disability-inclusion and mental health advocate.
As individuals struggle to gain clarity on their goals and how to achieve them, I sought out Bukola to share
with us how her services can be put to use for a harmonious life.
A lot of Nigerians are being exposed to coaching
training in recent times. Why do you think we
need coaches in our lives?
Coaching in itself is an old profession in human
history. When you think of a sports coach, whether for
football or track and field, we are used to that.
However, when you talk about life coaching, which is,
helping people move from where they are to where
they need to be, this is relatively new and it originated
from the USA over ten years ago.
According to Bill Gates, “Everybody needs a
coach.” If you need to learn something new, instead of
going to gather all the knowledge by yourself, employ
a coach who has vast knowledge in that field to guide
you. If you are good at something and you need to
exceed your potential, you need a coach. A coach can
also be like an accountability partner, holding your
hand and ensuring you meet your set targets.
In what aspect of living does a man need a coach
the most?
I would say in the area that a person has the most
challenges. E.g., for A, it could be that in his career he
is a highflier but his marriage is on the verge of
collapse. That man should set priority in getting a
marriage coach.
However, like I have said earlier, he can still get a
coach even for his career so that he keeps meeting
his career goals.
A look at your profile shows that you have your
hands in many pies; what aspect of coaching are
you into and which one do you enjoy most?
I will say I wear my hats…
I have written six books, I have produced two
documentaries and a short film. I am a mother with a
special needs child so, I advocate for disability inclusion.
Due to my experience as a mother of a special needs
child, I have experienced mental health issues such as
depression. As a result of that, I also advocate for mental
health. My journey to rediscover myself was what led me
to become a life coach.
A life coach can work with a client as regards the
critical areas of his or her life. What I enjoy most about
being a life coach is goal setting. Taking my client from
where he or she is, to where they want to be. The joy of
seeing my clients achieve their goals is phenomenon.
We are beginning to understand that all children
don’t have the same learning capacity. Should
children with learning challenges be lumped in the
same class with children who do not have such
challenges?
I advocate for inclusive education. My daughter has
greatly benefited from inclusive education.
“Inclusive education means all children in the same
classrooms, in the same schools. It means real learning
opportunities for groups who have traditionally been
excluded – not only children with disabilities, but
speakers of minority languages too.” - UNICEF.
As an advocate for Inclusive education, how should
this be done effectively?
This can be done through differentiated learning. For
example, if the students are asked to solve seven sums,
a person with a learning disorder can be asked to solve
three. The teacher will go at his level and his questions
will also take that format. In other cases, the child may
also have a shadow teacher seated with him in class, to
assist with learning. Another plus for the other students is
that, as the teacher is making creative ways to teach the
child with a learning disorder, they would also learn
better.
How is coaching different from counselling?
In counselling, the counselor will need to understand
his client to be able to formulate a specific solution to a
particular problem; but in coaching, it is primarily present
oriented. The coach may know about the client’s past,
but the focus is where the client is at now, and where he
wants to go. Therefore, for coaching to take place, the
client must be able to move on forward from a
reasonable stable base. Coaching is not appropriate for
the mentally ill, drug addicts, or a person with a history of
abuse.
A look at many young people in this country, one
can tell all is not well with our youths. Why is it hard
for many of them to clarify their goals and how can a
life coach help?
If you go by the youths on social media, you will
realise that many youths in Nigeria have one major goal,
that is, to leave the country. Another predominant goal is
to make a lot of money.
There is the issue of our belief system and our
values: as a person, a family, a community and a nation.
If a nation says we value hard work and integrity, they will
promote and reward hard work and integrity. This trickles
down to all facets of the nation, education, civil service,
the family, individuals etc. A lot of youths are disillusioned
about their future in Nigeria and this also affects the way
they set their goals.
The best approach to this, is for each individual, each
family, to decide what their belief system is, what their
values are which must also be in line with the laws and
regulations in Nigeria, and other developed countries.
Then, set goals that are in alignment with their values
and beliefs. Finally, they should put in measures to
achieve these goals.
INTERVIEW
With the obvious economic hardship being faced in
the country and youth population greatly affected by
the lack of job opportunities, how can their stress
level be lowered so they can have peace?
The number one major stressor for many youths is
social media! It’s no longer keeping up with the Joneses,
it’s now keeping up with social media trends.
When I finished Law School, my first legal job as a
litigation lawyer paid twenty five thousand naira (N25,
000). I wasn’t thinking about the latest clothes and the
weaves. I lived at my level. I wasn’t under any pressure
to compete with anybody. What I sought after was how
to improve myself and my skills, and before long, I was
able to earn much more than where I started from. It will
shock you that there are a lot of opportunities out there
but we do not have many skilled youths qualified for the
positions.
I will say to that youth out there, learn an immediate
skill that can earn you money like, digital skills,
photography, editing etc while also working on the skills
you need to qualify you for your dream job.
How can parents play their roles better in the home?
Up until the ‘80s and ‘90s, traditionally in Nigeria, the
father goes to work and the mother gets a job that allows
her close early or she may even be a stay-at-home
mum. Things have radically changed from there to
having both parents busy making money so that the
family can have a good life.
When parents know their roles in the family and see
themselves working as a team, then they will do all in
their power to ensure that everyone on that team
succeeds. When a man and a woman realise that they
need to support each other and work together to nurture
their children, then they have succeeded in their
parenting roles.
specific and desired outcomes. It is a set of models,
skills, and techniques for thinking and acting effectively
in the world.
When a client comes to me as an integrative coach,
where necessary, I deploy NLP techniques.
For example, a person who wants to set a health
and vitality goal but has sugar cravings, until the sugar
cravings are dealt with, the health and vitality goal will
not be accomplished. I will deploy some NLP
techniques to help the client overcome the sugar
carvings then we can go ahead to set goals.
What can the government do to support children
with special needs?
The government can do a lot but let’s start with the
basics. Therapy and rehabilitation centres can be
decentralised to the health centres in local
communities. Financial support for indigent families
who have children with disabilities will go a long way.
Education of the public about people with disabilities so
that people living with disabilities are accepted and not
demonised in the community.
Where there is a child with special needs in the
family, women often bear the burden of nurturing
and parenting. What should be the role of each
parent in the life of that child?
I believe strongly that the parents should work
together as a team and when one is emotionally low, the
other can encourage the partner. Just like how you
nurture your neuro typical children, parents should also
learn to do the same for children living with special
needs.
As a parent with a special need child, share with us
your coping mechanism.
I often tell people that I am not a super woman, what
I have is a great support system. My husband supports
me greatly and together, we ensure that we have the
right caregivers and therapist to work with our child per
time. This enables both of us to have time for ourselves
and do other things.
As a neuro-linguistics therapist, what kinds of
people come for your services?
NLP- Neuro Linguistics Programming is about how to
use the language of the mind to consistently achieve our
The joy of
seeing my
clients
achieve their
goals is
phenomenon.
NEW YEAR SEX GOALS - pt 2
O
rder a new piece of
lingerie monthly - This is
interesting because a lot of ladies
don’t get what the big deal is about
lingerie. Simple truth is that, it’s the
same concept; every female is a gift and dressing
that gift up makes sexual experience much more
exciting to the giver and the receiver. It
encourages the art of seduction and there’s
something sensual about slowly taking off one’s
clothes or slowly having them taking off, tends to
bring in the element of surprise.
One way of doing this in the New Year, is to create
your own “Lingerie of the Month” club. Purchase
something this month and the following month, your
lover can buy something for you. Include the man’s
purchase, what do you like to see him wear to bed?
Add that also to the monthly list.
Put a Sex Bucket List Together - There are
at least 10 benefits that come from creating bucket
lists; five of which are; they excite us, motivate,
keeps us active and forces us to figure out what we
really want which sounds like some really good
reasons to come up with a customized 2022 sex
bucket list. Here are some possible ideas for the bucket:
from going on getaway tour, oral sex in an unusual place,
writing an erotic story together, being naked for an entire
day together, having regular sex or mastering multiple
orgasms. Avoid the rut of ho-hum sex; come up with a list
that will keep you on your toes rather than on your back.
Invest in Morning Sex - Co-sign with your spouse
for ‘’A little head’’ in the morning, it makes everything
alright. The children are a little less on your nerves and
you’re just in a main frame of mind. Be it oral
sex or penetration, morning sex can give more
energy, make you more productive throughout
the day and help in keeping your stress levels
low. What are you waiting for? Get your lover a
blank greeting card and write in it that you are
committing to participating in constant morning
sex. It will surprise you by how much brighter
your world becomes if/when you decide to give
it a shot.
aT least one Sexcation in a year
- Most married people hardly go for a romantic
vacation since their honeymoon. If you can
relate with l this, seize the day and plan some
sexcations for the year that just started. Note
that these are not to be mistaken for family trips
where you try and sneak a quickie before the
children wakes up. Actually, these are
vacations that are devoted to NOTHING BUT
SEX.
Affirm one another’s bodies on a
regular basis- Many ladies including guys
hate to make love with the lights on because
they are not sexually confident about their body
or body size. The men don’t feel as virile as
they used to due to the extra weight that
they’ve put on over the years. Do not allow
your sex life and ultimately, your relationship to
suffer simply because you are self-conscious
about your boobs that aren’t as perky as they
used to be (ladies) or the size of the manhood
(men).
Just in case you are aware that your partner is
not currently comfortable with his/her body,
implement the Golden Rule and treat them how
you’d want to be treated. Words of affirmation
are powerful in this situation and it can never
hurt to receive compliments from the one we’re
most intimate with.
Get started now and watch how the year 2022
blows your mind.
HAPPY NEW YEAR - YEAR OF WONDERS
WITHOUT NUMBERS!
It provides colours and vibrancy, turning dull walls into focal points. It
breaks up neutral zones and fills in those blank spaces. Art adds depth
and offers so much versatility when it comes to look and feel.
Interior Styling Tips
2022: Ideas for Wellbeing
Our homes have been our sanctuaries, our safe places. They have been our
only constant in these unpredictable times. This is a great time to makeover
those important rooms in the house.
As we settle into a more stable future, where the new normal is just normal,
key themes will include optimism, opportunity, renewal, and of course, a big
focus on our mental health and wellbeing. In interiors, it’s all about
remembering what’s important, so design concepts have to speak to the
individual, affecting how we think and feel.
If you want your home to be the epitome of
happiness, here are some of the best
interior styling tips (2022 and beyond).
Start with wall art
One of the easiest ways of upgrading the
ambience in a room is with the addition of art.
Wall art is such a vital part of any home design.
Dip your brush in every shade of green
Green is the colour to covet. All shades of green are welcome in 2022,
and layering is fully encouraged too. There’s no right answer, as long as
the result is soothing, relaxing or uplifting. Green interior design does
amazing things for mental health, for many, it’s the colour of life, of
safety, of renewal. In colour psychology, this nature-inspired shade is
associated with growth, harmony and positivity, and that’s exactly what
our homes need in the year of recovery.
Throw some shapes into the mix
Shapes can affect our mood just as much as colour. While square and
rectangular shapes create feelings of security, reliability and strength,
circles and ellipses can be harmonious and cozy-looking. Triangular
shapes can create a brave sort of energy that awakens your senses and
makes you feel alive. And shapes can create different moods and
stories.
Refresh tired furniture with peel and stick wallpaper
If you want a fast, affordable and adaptable way to hit the refresh button
on tired walls, surfaces or furniture, peel and stick wallpaper can be the
versatile answer you’ve been looking for. From giving old cupboards a
new lease to life to wallpapering unexpected
corners of the home, there are so many ways to
use peelable coverings to decorate.
Invest in house plants that make
you happy
Green is the go-to colour, and nature is the
overriding theme. There’s a huge appreciation
for all things botanical, and house plants can
bring your house to life.
TIPS
Waterproof Eyeliner
And Mascara
Choose waterproof eyeliner and mascara
as these tend to blur easily. Avoid
applying eye cream while using eyeliners
and mascara.
Tone And
Moisturise
Using a toner after
rinsing and exfoliating
your skin makes it glow
and feel smoother. Apply
moisturiser on your skin.
Stay hydrated enough, so
that your skin remains
hydrated at any given
time. Purchase a
moisturiser based on your
skin type and ensure it is
oil-free. This helps to prepare your skin
before applying makeup.
Press powder
Invest in a good compact or lightweight
powder. On applying your liquid
foundation, set it with a translucent
powder or a compact. Dab the powder
lightly as this helps the foundation last
longer and not make your skin look
cakey. Pick your shade of concealer and
set it gently with a little bit of powder.
2
Prep Your
Skin With
Primer
Primer is the first
product you must apply
before you get your
hands on makeup. It is
the secret to keeping
your makeup intact and
lasting throughout the
day. It helps to lock in
your moisturiser so that
your foundation does not
get absorbed by your
skin and fade away.
A good quality primer
evens out skin tone and
blurs out any
imperfections. It takes
care of any pores and
fine lines on your skin too. Ensure your
primer is water-based and oil-free, so it
keeps your foundation intact.
Do you ever wonder which techniques to employ
to make your make-up last longer? After
you spend twenty minutes or more of your
valuable time and effort applying perfect
makeup, you want it to stay gorgeous and
fresh all day long. If you’re tired of your
makeup leaving your face faster than you
want it to, you must learn how to make your
makeup last longer easily, from picking the
right base, to ensure you’re using the right
skincare and application technique.
These are a few tips and tricks to use to
prolong the effect of your makeup, make
you glow all day long, no matter what the
day has in store for you!
Invest
In A Good Foundation
Invest in a quality, lightweight oil-free
foundation, so it will not crease or give
your skin a cakey look. This will stay in
place all day long and be weightless on
your skin. Pick a foundation suitable for
your skin type and offers full coverage
lasting for 24 hours.
Lock Your Lipstick
With A Lip Liner
Don’t forget to lock in your lipstick with a
lip liner. Swiping on a long-lasting lipstick
by adding a layer or two as per your
choice helps your shade last longer.
Set It With A Setting
Spray
After applying your
make-up, don’t
forget to set it with
a makeup setting
spray. A setting
spray works as a
final touch-up and
helps your makeup
stay in place. It
makes the skin glow
and prolongs the
makeup wear time
of your skin.
8
7
Develop Your
Eyeshadow Technique
The secret behind a long-lasting
eyeshadow is to apply concealer as your
base. This will ensure your eye makeup
lasts all night long. It will make your
eyeshadow pop up and give it an
enchanting look and feel. So don’t forget
to prime your eyelids with concealer
before you set out with your smokey or
neutral eyeshadow look.
