Happy New Year!
2021 can get the heck out of here!
Enough already! The reality is that it was
a wonderful year on many accounts,
but certainly another continuous year of
adjusting, adapting, overthinking, making
LOTS of decisions and working through new,
interesting situations that none of us would
have thought about a few years ago.
Tribute is in a state of constant movement
and is evolving in a positive way. While
COVID does affect all of us on a certain
level, this past year has hopefully removed a
few layers of the initial fear that came when
this all rolled out in early 2020. Although
it creates roadblocks and disruptions, it’s
manageable. And at this point in time,
our customers need us more than ever.
Death rates are up, but this is not a direct
correlation to COVID; the population is simply
aging and our society does not do the best
at staying healthy – with or without COVID.
That being said, the New Year is generally
the time for us to reflect on our health, our
families, our goals, etc. Remember that this is
all extremely important and your health is the
foundation for anything else. Tribute LOVES
healthy employees, so please take care of
your health however you can.
We are under a new health care plan
(United Healthcare) which offers some great
wellness credits, initiatives and membership
give aways. Be sure to check out those new
offerings if you’re part of our program.
Check the new employee manual out for
additional “perks/benefits” that are being
rolled out this year:
• New employee referral program (Did
someone say “extra paid day off?”)
• Additional match in our 401(k) program
- continued -
– 2 – Tribute Pacesetter January 2022
And your managers will be announcing more perks as we can work through their
implementation! Some of these are a result of your feedback on the survey that I sent out, so
THANK YOU for taking the time to fill that out.
I cannot forget to acknowledge everyone who showed up to the Tribute “masks required”
Masquerade/Murder mystery dinner. You all looked smashing and it was quite a spectacular
night. Thanks for making me proud (except, perhaps, for the bartender alerting me at a later
date how many shots were served that night.) It really was a magical night to have so many
of us together to celebrate the end of 2021.
Cheers to an even better 2022! You all deserve a great year ahead.
Sincerely,
Christie Toson, President

A Warm Welcome
Dustin Sotka, Installation Specialist – Born and raised in Northeast
Wisconsin, Dustin developed his “maker” mindset and fanatic work
ethic from the very beginning. There were early mornings, starting
at age 12, when he would wake up before school to milk cows at
the nearest dairy farm, and even before that, there were late nights,
assembling Legos by closet light, in hopes that he wouldn’t be caught
awake after bed time.
A proud father and husband, Dustin now resides in Michigan’s Upper
Peninsula with his new daughter and incredibly loving and supportive
wife. Throughout his life, Dustin learned by doing, all things carpentry, and when he isn’t on
the road as the Installation Specialist for The Tribute Companies, he owns and operates a
local contracting business and several rental properties.
Dustin approaches the Installation Specialist role with the same zeal he used to assemble
those Legos so many years ago. With a keen eye for detail, Dustin’s goal is to deliver quality
workmanship on all Tribute projects, while ensuring that crew safety is always front of mind
and paramount. Dustin is thrilled for the exciting opportunity to grow, learn, and lead the
Tribute installation team.

Spreading Joy!
Tribute’s corporate office team made
Christmas extra special for a Waukesha
family this year. Working through the
Christmas Clearing Council, we were
matched with a family in need with three
young daughters.
Money was donated and gifts were
purchased and wrapped. Through the
amazing generosity by our Hartland
employees, Tribute was able to deliver all of
the gifts on Skylar, Brooklyn and Zoey’s Santa
lists, as well as a little something extra for their
mom, Tatiana.
Oh what fun it was to spread joy during the
holidays!
“Thank you guys so much! I truly
appreciated you!!! You don’t know how
much this means to me and my children
… I’m just so very thankful. It really made
my day yesterday and I know it will make
their day when they open their presents.
I hope you and your families have a
happy holiday and wonderful new year.”

A Job Well Done
Recently Tribute Precast Systems was in upstate New York at Woodlawn Cemetery in
Syracuse. Working with CBD Companies of Syracuse, the job included installing a 196 casket
space, seven high tandem crypt exterior mausoleum. Tribute completed the installation in
1.5 days.
Our team then installed 36 casket spaces, including single and double depth couch crypts,
in an existing INTERIOR chapel space. This installation involved some specialized equipment,
ingenuity, and talent by our team. Duration of the installation was two days.
There is almost no limit to precast concrete and working with Tribute to add additional
inventory to a cemetery! Great work everyone!

Theme of the Year 2022
Have you noticed the new theme logo on email signatures,
stickers and ads? The Tribute Companies sets a new theme
at the beginning of each year. It is meant to motivate and
to guide each employee.
SUCCESS through SYNERGY is our theme for 2022. How do we
work together to provide the right combination of products
and service to our customers to ensure their success as well
as our own.
Synergy: the interaction or cooperation of two or more
organizations, substances, or other agents to produce a
combined effect greater than the sum of their separate
effects.

Our Accounting Team Rocks
In the second half of last year, Tribute
changed to a brand new accounting
software – Acumatica – including payroll.
This was no small feat and the accounting
team under the direction of Manager Kim

updating standard operating procedures
and thoroughly testing for accuracy.
We recognize and thank each of you for
your hard work on this very important project.

Ok Ladies,
I don’t want you to get embarrassed, or the
opposite, get your egos overinflated, but I had
to share this with you.
We have regularly scheduled brief all team
meetings each M-W-F morning first thing.
Tera brought up the fact that you are going
live on Acumatica next week. Landry, Ray
and Tera told our whole group that they
were VERY IMPRESSED by your dedication
to testing as well as your thoroughness.

actually, I’m joking…YOU SHOULD BE
VERY PROUD of your project!

New Faces, New Places
David P. Smith, Jr. has been promoted to
Director of Business Development and is
now located in the Hartland office. David
will be developing additional markets for
Tribute’s precast and design divisions.
Many of you already know David as a
Family Service Counselor at Pinelawn
Memorial Park. He started there in
December 2018. Throughout his time at
Pinelawn, he has guided hundreds of
families who have experienced a loss
through the process of making burial
arrangements. He has worked closely
with funeral homes to arrange logistics for
committal services and has helped drive
the necessity of pre-planning cemetery
arrangements in order to protect families
from the emotional and financial burden
of making these important decisions at
the time of need.
David begins his new role with a
background of understanding how
Tribute can assist cemeteries with their
expansion needs. He has traveled
with Tribute Precast to help set and
seal mausoleum crypts and niches in
various states across the country. He
looks forward to the
challenges and
opportunities in his
new role, and is
eager to find ways
that Tribute can
assist cemeteries
with their design
and precast
needs.
Tribute has a new
partner in customer
service. Please
welcome “Elizabeth,”
our After Care Specialist.
Elizabeth is not an actual
employee, but rather
someone who works on
our behalf through an
outside service.
The Domani Group boosts our cemetery’s
at-need growth by providing aftercare and
preneed appointment setting services that
power one another. The Domanicare text
messaging-based aftercare, online grief
support, and preneed appointment setting
services all work together to help each
location better support their families as well
as grow their businesses.
Domani for Grief is presented to families as
an additional option during our aftercare
communication via text message. In cases
where family responses convey an urgent
need for grief support, we offer these services
right away. The families will receive these
texts from what they believe is an onsite
agent who will be able to assist them with
any questions or concerns. The agent name
is always the same to avoid confusion
and for the Tribute companies her name
is Elizabeth. Either the first message-based
grief coaching session or the first in-person
therapy session is provided free on behalf of
our cemetery. This increases customer loyalty
and gratitude beyond what competing
aftercare services can provide.
So, when someone calls and asks for
Elizabeth, please don’t say, “I’m sorry there
is no one here by that name.” We are all
“Elizabeth.”

A Tribute to Veterans
Before
The Veterans Memorial at Restlawn Memorial Park has received a fantastic makeover.
Special thanks to Grounds Manager Shawn Heinrichs for his work to design and set the new
pavers. A true talent that deserves to be recognized. Thank you, Shawn.
Did you know that all of our parks offer an exceptional benefit program in honor of
the Military Veterans in our communities?
Knowing that our Veterans deserve to receive recognition for their service in life and death,
the programs offered at our cemeteries allow permanent recognition in dignified, honorable
areas of the cemetery that have been dedicated for Veteran burials.
Each honorably discharged military veteran is entitled to one free grave space when these
arrangements are preplanned.
Ground burial arrangements will be enhanced with the free memorial that is issued by the
Veteran Administration at the time of death. Several beautiful granite base and vase options
are available for the free memorial to be installed on. Veteran emblems can be added to
crypts (for caskets), niches (for cremation) or any type of memorial stone to enhance the
space and proudly display military service.
At Restlawn, a military themed corridor is a focal point inside the beautiful mausoleum
chapel building.
In addition, each park offers an Avenue of Flags Program to proudly display the American
Flag that is presented at the funeral ceremony after taps is played. This flag is a “symbol
of our country’s appreciation for the honorable and faithful service” of the Veteran. The
program has a one-time enrollment fee and entails:
• Personalized flagpole with Veteran’s name, war service and branch of military
• Display of flag on Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day (weather dependent) each year
• Proper storage of the flag between holidays
To learn more or to experience the recognition of our Veterans first-hand, plan to volunteer
or attend one of this year’s Memorial Day programs.

It is an honor to celebrate special occasions
and milestones in the lives of our employees
– weddings, newborn babies, graduations,
loss of a loved one, and the list goes on – and
even more so when we get to recognize their

Restlawn (November 28)
• Zach Rasmussen, Manager of Design,

• Phil Butler, Driver Tribute Precast Ashley
(January 9)
To offer our thanks and congratulate them, Heather, Zach and Phil each received a gift

The Benefit of Preplanning for Employees
David Line, General Sales Manager – In our line of work we are constantly focused on
assisting families to pre-arrange, or developing the products necessary in providing
someone with a final resting place, but it’s easy to forget that we too need to make our own
arrangements! In this article I will touch on some of the information we provide families we
meet with and highlight some of the benefits we provide to our employees.
Did you know you can get discounts planning your own funeral just by working
for Tribute? Any full-time employee of Tribute or the cemeteries will be permitted a 20%
discount on any property and merchandise selected on a preneed basis! Furthermore,
family members of any full-time employee of Tribute or the cemeteries will be permitted a
12% discount on any property or merchandise selected. The cost of a funeral is expected
to double every 8 to 10 years in line with health care and real estate costs, and funeral costs
today range between $12,000 and $15,000 – every possible discount matters!
One massive point of confusion many families meet in Wisconsin is the fact that we are an
anti-combo state. This means that, by law, at the time of need a family must meet with both
a cemetery AND a funeral home. It’s insanely inconvenient during one of the most stressful
times in a person’s life. We can simplify the process by planning in advance of need.
Final Expense Insurance is a form of life insurance meant specifically for funeral
arrangements. It provides you with the peace of mind that no matter what financial or
medical hardships you may face between the time of coverage and death, your family will
always have the finances to pay for your funeral.
The reality of end of life planning is that there is a lot to it. So much that I will spare you the
rest of my spiel… for now. Keep an eye out for more useful end of life planning information in
future Pacesetters!
On the Road with Tribute

Dean Wardlow In the Spotlight
From the pen and photo albums of Marcia and Lindsey
Wardlow – Dean Wardlow has been a dedicated employee
of The Tribute Companies for more than 26 consecutive
years. Actually, Dean has been associated with Tribute for
more than 30 years. He worked for Tribute for a couple of
years, then he left and worked for a motorcycle company.
He was rehired by Tribute and soon after promoted to Plant
Manager of Tribute Precast in Freeport, Illinois in 1995. Dean
has recently stepped down as Plant Manager and handed
the baton to Josh Schemel.
Dean was born in Freeport and graduated from Freeport
High School. Growing up, he was heavily involved in sports.
He had a particular interest in baseball and played pitcher
throughout his years of involvement for Freeport High School
and Highland Community College. He also enjoyed racing
motorcycles (motocross) in his early twenties.
Dean joined the military to serve in the Army. During his
time of service, Dean drove tanks as an engineer and was
stationed in various places such as Colorado Springs and
West Germany.
Dean met his wife, Marcia, in 1987 and they were married in
1989 in Freeport. They have three children; Kyle (26) followed
in his dad’s footsteps and currently works for The Tribute
Companies in Freeport; Lindsey (24) is a speech language
pathologist living in Dallas, Texas; and Nathan (23) is currently
serving in the Air Force and is stationed in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In his spare time, you can find Dean casing out a line from his
fishing boat, riding his bicycle, or spending time with friends
and family. Dean also enjoys playing guitar and bass guitar
and participates in his church’s worship team.

Who Was Dr. Feelgood?
Following the masquerade party, Clyde Rupnow, Director of Buildings and Grounds,
received this ornament as part of a white elephant exchange. The brainchild of the Fort
Howard team, the ornament was made by Tyler and Bri Tolman.
Clyde performed the role of “Dr. Feelgood” at the party marvelously. He was not,
however, the murderer. That honor was given to Claren Harris, guest of David Line. Claren
was so good at her role, many guests thought that she was a professional actress from the
Murder Mystery Company.
It was fun to see so many employees and their guests having fun at the party! Thanks for a
great night!

David Line, General Sales Manager – When we look back on 2021, there is A LOT to be proud
of. Overall, Tribute cemeteries were up 20% in total sales volume, up 16% in property volume,
and up 19% in pre-need volume. We would not see increases like this without a great overall
team effort – whether it’sthe grounds crews keeping our parks beautiful or the administrative
team dealing with an endless list of requests. Thank you everyone for the work you do every

Sasha Krohn $58,346 $9,005 46%
Congratulations to Matt for making Employee of the Year and finishing on top of the list for
both property and total volume. Quite the feat for his first year in the business.
78% of Gary’s sales were pre-need. He only had $86,129 in at-need volume. To put that in
perspective, Tyler wrote more volume ($98,397) in the month of August than Gary’s at-need
volume for the entire year. Here’s a guy who doesn’t wait on a sale to walk through the
door!
Dean and Sasha haven’t been here long, but both are catching on quick. Yesterday Sasha
game planned a pre-need appointment he was going in to with the intention of selling
a companion lawn crypt, and he did just that; good sh-tuff. Dean has averaged $36,551
in total volume per month with property accounting for 62% of his volume in the five short
months he’s been here. That’s a great start to your career and Fort Howard now looks
poised to challenge Pinelawn this year for total volume!
Awesome year everybody! Thank you!!

Walking the Red Carpet
Christie Toson, John Trojan, Project Manager/Construction
Superintendent and Adriane Feltz, Accounting were among
700 business executives, community leaders and veterans who

20 at the new Brookfield Conference Center.
Honor Flight takes veterans and either family members or
guardians to Washington, D.C., for
a one-day whirlwind trip to see the
memorials that honor their service
and give them thanks for their military
service.
Walking the red carpet was just one
highlight of the evening. Of course, it’s
all fun and games until someone gets
a hold of the picture and plays with the
photo editor. Thankfully, John is a good
sport!
A great time was had supporting this
important cause.
Welcome to Tribute
