UNFORGETTABLE HIKES IN NORDFJORD

Nordfjord offers a wide range of walks, from

hikes to high summits that will take your breath

away, to smooth paths along the exotic coastline

and ambles along historic trails in a rolling

countryside. These varied trails represent the

very best walks in the Nordfjord area. Mt. Skåla

– Norway’s highest mountain sea to summit,

towers 1,848 metres above the fjord. Together

with Via Ferrata Loen, Segestad, Lotsstøylen,

Eggenipa, Trollenyken, Hornelen, Skongenes

Lighthouse, Selja Monastery and Ytre Fure, Skåla

is one of many highlights of hiking in Nordfjord.

WALKING TRIPS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

There are many family-friendly walks and

cultural trails in the Nordfjord region. The

following areas are particularly suitable for

children: Trivsselsskogen in Sandane, Harpefossen

NORDFJORD TRACKS

Close to water

If you have planned a week’s holiday in Nordfjord,

you may want to extend your stay when you discover

the range of activities in our lakes, rivers and fjords!

Imagine gliding across a quiet, clear lake in a kayak,

throwing your fishing line into the sea, or getting

your adrenaline pumping with RIB-rafting or surfing

in a wild natural setting.

SURFING

The word “surfing” may make you think of palm

trees and tropical temperatures in southern climes

but surfing in the beautiful coastal landscape on

the Stad peninsula is every bit as exotic. At Stad

you will find perfect surfing conditions, with big

waves rolling onto white sandy beaches against a

stunning backdrop of steep mountainsides. These

fantastic beaches have long been hidden gems, but

more and more people are discovering the thrill of

surfing out here on the edge of the North Atlantic.

The kilometre-long sandy beach at Hoddevik is

one of Norway’s best and most beautiful surfing

spots. The towering mountains protect the beach

from the strongest winds, creating ideal conditions

for surfing. Thirty kilometres from Hoddevik is

Ervikstranda beach, where there almost always

are waves to be found.

Lapoint Surf Camp: Hoddevik, Stad. Surfing camps,

courses, equipment for hire.

Be aware of undercurrents on

these beaches, and also, of the

remains of shipwrecks in Ervik.

FISHING – FJORD,

SEA AND FRESH WATER

Saltwater fishing is free for

everyone. The best sea angling

is at the coast, and you can

make good catches both from

For freshwater fishing, you will

need a permit, which can be

purchased at sports shops,

many campsites and some

hotels. In some places, there

are self-service machines

SCUBA DIVING

The Nordfjord coast is a

paradise for diving enthusiasts.

Countless boats have gone to

a watery grave in the treacherous

waters around Stad, but

few have been discovered or

explored by divers. Maybe

new wreck? The bottom is rich

in vegetation with kelp forests,

caves and interesting rock

formations, and of course,

many types of fish and shellfish.

safety’s sake.

NORDFJORD SAGA

What is it about Nordfjord`s

1,200-year-old story that

has made the region what

it is today? Nordfjord Saga

is a historical experience

based on who we were

and who we are.

NORDFJORD SAGA

The saga of Nordfjord defines our people,

our culture and our traditions. The story begins

over twelve hundred years ago in the centre of

Nordfjord, where a mighty Viking ship, built to

defend the honour and riches of a king, looms

over the shore. The remains of that vessel, the

Myklebust Viking Ship, were discovered in 1874,

and proved to be one of the longest Viking

ships ever found.

But our story does not end there. It becomes

a medieval harmony of hymns and whispers

on the holy island of Selja, where English

Benedictine monks found religious peace in

a spectacular natural setting. The ruins of Selja

monastery can still be seen today. Along with

the ruins, the story of the Irish princess Saint

Sunniva who suffered a martyr’s death on

the island lives on in Nordfjord.

Agriculture and fishing have been the most

important means of making a living since the

very first people settled in Nordfjord. Our

present way of life and our heritage are built

upon the skills, tales and traditions of our

predecessors. At Nordfjord Folk Museum you

will catch a glimpse of the everyday life of the

farmers, fishermen and craftspeople in the

region from the 17th century until today,

whose hard work built our towns, villages

and farmsteads. And the story continues

today, tomorrow and onwards into the next

millennium, as we add chapter after chapter

to our saga. Nordfjord Saga. The history that

shaped us.

The voyages of the Vikings

made a lasting impact on

Europe. Artifacts found in

Nordfjord prove that the

region was part of this process.

Ancient burial sites can be

seen in several places, and

at Myklebust in Nordfjordeid,

traces of a burnt Viking ship

were discovered in 1874. The

remains of the Myklebust ship

had a length of 30 metres,

making it one of the largest

Viking ships ever found.

At the Sagastad Interpretive

Center, you can learn about

this part of our heritage. You

can learn about the Myklebust

in similar ships, and about

their world and ancient rituals.

Selja Monastery

Selja rises like a green

cathedral from the foaming

sea at Stad. The Irish princess

Sunniva, seeking refuge from

Vikings, suffered a martyr’s

death in a cave on this island.

Legend has it that King Olav

Tryggvason and his bishop

uncovered Sunniva’s resting

place in CE 996. Found

beneath fallen boulders, her

remains were miraculously

untouched and unharmed.

Ages, pilgrims from all over

Europe made long journeys

to this island at the end of

the world.

Saint Sunniva became the

patron saint of Bergen and

western Norway, and a guardian

of seafarers along our

coast. In the 12th century,

Benedictine monks built a

monastery on the island,

which lasted for 400 years.

Sunniva was declared a

saint, the first in Norway and

the only female saint in our

country’s history. King Olav

raised a church near the cave

in her honour and placed her

remains in a reliquary by the

high altar. Selja became

Norway’s first pilgrimage site

and throughout the Middle

The story of the brave and

pious princess and her

dramatic escape still draws

people to Selja, to visit the

cave in which she was found,

and which bears her name.

The peaceful island is the

perfect setting for a walk

among the ruins, listening

to the tale of Saint Sunniva.

NORDFJORD TASTE

Spending spring and summer outdoors,

farm animals in Nordfjord graze on lush fields

and hillsides, surrounded by roaring waterfalls,

bright-blue glaciers and steep mountains that

create a perfect rural idyll. The fertile soil,

combined with a mild climate and long summer

days helps fruit and berry trees to thrive, and

you will see fruit farms everywhere along the

fjord and in the valleys of Nordfjord.

Traditionally, agriculture and fishing have

provided the region’s most important sources

of food. Today, chefs building on these local

traditions, combine ingredients from fjord,

forest and field. The sweetness and delicate

touch of acidity in seasonal berries and fruits

compliment the rich flavours of venison, lake

trout, veal and salt-water fish.

FISH

Fish is a crucial resource for our coastal

municipalities, where a modern fishing fleet

and a well-developed aquaculture industry

team with world-class processing and export

activities. Brødrene Larsen (The Larsen

brothers) in Bremanger, founded in 1963,

is one of several suppliers of quality fish,

both over the counter and to other

companies in western Norway.

POPULAR DRIVING ROUTES

THE OLD STRYNEFJELL

MOUNTAIN ROAD

National tourist road,

built in 1894, that winds over

and through the mountains

between Stryn and Skjåk.

For many years, the gravel

road was the only connection

between east and west, and

the Norwegian Public Roads

Administration has rebuilt the

old guard stones so that the

tourists will feel as though

they are travelling in the past.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Trondheim Postal Road

is a part of our cultural

heritage. The 700 km long

network, constructed

between 1780 and 1804,

was the first road connection

between rural villages and

the cities of Bergen and

Trondheim. You can walk

parts of the old road, using

the many beautiful trails in

our forests and valleys.

If you drive, there are many

small back roads worth a

little detour to see one of

our hidden scenic pearls.

Do not miss the amazing

stone bridge, Jøl bridge, on

your way up the mountain.

You will also find a summer

skiing centre, picnic areas and

information boards along the

route. www.turistveg.no

NB! For safety’s sake, vehicles

over 8 meters and/or with

axle pressures above 8 tons

are prohibited.

THE PANORAMA ROAD

This 38 km route follows the

northern side of Nordfjord

between Stryn and Nordfjordeid,

passing through the

communities of Blakset,

Fjelli, Randabygd/Hopland,

Hennebygda and Lote. Start

6 km from the centre of Stryn.

The Panorama road has taken

its name from the fantastic

views it affords of the fjord.

The road’s altitude above sea

level varies from 0 to 550 m.

Particularly good viewpoints

are at Nordsida church, Nos

and Kvalen. On the route you

can also take in the cultural

trails at Ulvedal and Hammer,

the Tvinnefoss waterfall, and

other historical attractions.
