Head Coach
Mark Bonner
Firstly, I’d like to welcome David Artell, his staff and players to The Abbey
for today’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Crewe Alexandra.
You certainly have to give credit to them
for how well Doncaster played in the
first half, in particular. Gary has got them
working incredibly hard for each other in
a difficult situation and the addition of
a couple of players across the attacking
line gave them a good impetus.
Thanks to some profligate finishing on their
side and some brave defending on ours,
we got through the toughest part of the
game when we found it hard to get going
at the level of intensity we needed. Perhaps
the toughness of the previous seven days
and the quick turnaround to Tuesday found
us out a little. But we always felt we had
our own threats in the game, particularly
down the left-hand side where James
Brophy was causing them big problems.
Doncaster will be disappointed they didn’t
take the lead in the game, they had a
couple of good chances to do it, but we
managed to hang in there, and then the
goal on half time made it a different game
for us in the second half.
You have to give credit to our players
for the fact that they just keep grinding,
keep going and finding a way of staying in
games. This is what we will need throughout
the remainder of January and February.
Whatever the circumstances look like, we
will be challenged over the coming weeks
and we will need your help and support.
Before Christmas we said often how well
we have played and not taken any points,
so we will take plenty more games like
Tuesday if that is required.
We won a lot of game during winter last
year, when you are not always playing your
best and those wins are gold dust. Tuesday
was a huge result for us.
Any time you can get consecutive wins in
the league when you are a team like us is a
big thing. Anyone who turns up thinking we
will just beat anyone in this league because
of their league position is mistaken. We
know where we are and will remain humble
enough to stick to the task ahead.
Crewe have had a good run of results
and performances in recent weeks. I went
to their game at home to Charlton last
Wednesday and a few weeks’ prior at
Ipswich. They won one of those games but
were super competitive in both. We know
that first hand, having had to fight from
behind and score in the death of injury time
to salvage a point earlier in the season.
I know David Artell well and respect him
and the job he does for the Club. Crewe
are very clear on what they are and will
continually be an example to clubs like ours
for the development of young players.
Here is hoping we can continue scoring
points on what I’m sure will be another
tough afternoon.
Stay Safe,
Chief Executive Officer
ian mather
Welcome to our visitors from Crewe. When we last played in October we
were in the middle of a fuel crisis and that meant that a number of U’s
fans (me included) couldn’t make the trip to The Mornflake stadium.
Thankfully there should be no similar
problems for this game.
As all football supporters know, on any given
day win, lose or draw is possible. League
position can, and frequently does, fly out
of the window – ask Newcastle United! On
Tuesday we played bottom of the table
Doncaster who pushed us hard and, being
honest, were unlucky not to score more than
they did. My point – expect a hard fought
game today.
Although all teams compete hard on
the pitch, there is a sense of unity and
common purpose amongst very many clubs
off the pitch.
One subject that unites many, particularly
in Leagues 1 and 2 is the need for financial
and governance reform. It is a subject I have
talked about a lot – and make no apologies
for doing so. The Tracey Crouch MP review
was clear in calling for radical changes to
how football is run to make it sustainable for
generations to come.
For the Crouch reforms to become reality
we need the Government propose changes
to the law and for Parliament to back those
changes. I was therefore very pleased, though
not at all surprised, to read a letter from
Daniel Zeichner, MP for Cambridge this week
to Cambridge Fans United, backing these
reforms. I quote:
“I welcome the review. We have known for a
very long time that football is broken, and I
have long supported calls for an independent
regulator to fix it. I am concerned that
the Government has only stated that it is
endorsing this recommendation “in principle”.
Furthermore, as the review makes clear,
the recommendations need to be seen as a
package – cherry-picking recommendations
will simply lead to a botched reform. I believe
the Government needs to accept all of the
review’s recommendations, including both the
principle and the detail of the independent
regulator, which it should enshrine in law
without any further delay.”
Well said Daniel.
We need more MP’s to back this reform
and my message to all fans is to encourage
your own MP to follow Daniel and the many
other MP’s who have backed reform. This is
something that should unite fans across the
country.
Now back to today and two sides hungry for
three points.
Enjoy the game.
Today’s Opposition
Crewe Alexandra
FOUNDED: 1877 | NICKNAME: THE ALEX | STADIUM: GRESTY ROAD | LAST SEASON: 12TH (SKY BET LEAGUE ONE)
Crewe Alexandra,
backed as always by the
Railwaymen faithful, make
the 300-mile-round-trip
down to Cambridge this
afternoon looking to make
it three games unbeaten
in the league, a feat
they’ve only managed on
one occasion in League
One this season.
David Artell’s men arrive at
the Abbey Stadium having
considerably boosted their
survival chances – after picking
up maximum points in three of
their last six League One outings.
Including an impressive 2-1 win
over Charlton Athletic recently.
Oliver Finney’s 38th minute
goal, having responded quickly
to Mikael Mandron’s initial shot
being saved, saw the hosts take
the lead. Crewe then doubled
their advantage on the stroke of
half-time, with Mandron again
involved after heading home Tom
Lowery’s cross.
Second half substitute Mason
Burstow did half the deficit with
ten minutes to play, however
Crewe – despite a controversial
offside call ruling out Elliot Lee’s
late goal – were able to hold on
for a massive three points at the
Mornflake Stadium.
Most recently, a goalless
draw at home to Shrewsbury
Town on Saturday has seen the
Railwaymen claw their way to being
within just four points of safety,
having sat bottom and seven
points shy of then 20th placed
Morecambe, following a 2-1 defeat
to Ipswich Town towards the back
end of November.
The performances of midfielder
Tom Lowery has been integral
to the Railwaymen’s recent
resurgence towards safety. With
the Crewe Alex academy graduate
contributing to three goals in the
Railwaymen’s last four League One
outings. Most recently scoring
what proved to be decisive in
Crewe’s 2-1 win over Charlton
midway through the month.
David Artell, now taking charge of
his sixth season at the Mornflake
Stadium, has admitted that the
club are pushing to complete
some January transfer business to
boost the Railwaymen’s chances
of survival, however, admits that
it is harder to complete deals in
January as opposed to the summer.
Memories of the two sides 2-2
draw at the Mornflake Stadium will
be fresh in fans’ minds having only
met in the league at the start of
October. Adam May’s dramatic last
minute strike salvaged a point for
the Mark Bonner’s side on the day,
having seen his side fall two-goals
down before half-time after Oliver
Finney and Scott Robertson fired
Crewe into a commanding lead
after just 26 minutes.
However, a dominant second half
display from the U’s was rewarded
with ten minutes to play, with Sam
Smith’s initial shot being bundled
into his own net by ‘keeper Will
Jääskeläinen, before Adam May
fired home from the edge of the
area in the 94th minute to see the
points shared.
History favours the hosts as they
prepare to welcome Crewe this
afternoon, having seen the U’s
run out victorious on 15 of the 32
occasions both sides have clashed
– with Crewe coming out on top
eight times.
Prior to October’s clash, then
United loanee Sam Smith’s
brace, coupled with an excellent
Paul Lewis header, saw Colin
Calderwood’s side run out 3-2
winners against eventual League
Two runners-up Crewe in an
entertaining affair at the Mornflake
Stadium in 2019.
Place of birth:
Rotherham, Egland
Having captained the
Railwaymen to promotion
in 2012, as well as working
within the renowned Crewe
Artell was the natural
successor to Steve Davis
in 2017 when the manager
parted ways with Crewe
following six years in charge.
Described in his playing days
as a “committed, aggressive
former Morecambe boss Jim
Safe Hands
Dave Richards
Position: Goakeeper
Age: 28
Nationality: Welsh
Having overtaken Will
Jääskeläinen in the battle
for minutes in goal at
Gresty Road at the start
of November, the former
Cardiff stopper has
not looked back since,
keeping five clean sheets
in the Railwaymen’s last
15 outings. Most recently
impressing in his side’s 0-0
draw with Shrewsbury last
weekend. Since Richard’s
has cemented his position
in goal, the Alex have won
six games, and now find
themselves sitting just
four points from safety.
The Rock
Billy Sass-Davies
Position: Defender
Age: 21
Nationality: Welsh
Enjoying his breakout
season at Gresty Road, the
defender who progressed
through Crewe’s academy
before being loaned out
numerous times prior to
this season, Sass-Davies
has quickly become a
fans favourite with the
Railwaymen faithful since
breaking into Artell’s
side towards the end of
September. Standing at
six-foot, the commanding
centre half has impressed
this season with his
aerial ability, winning 11
of 13 duels against the
Shrewsbury attack last
weekend.
Position: Midfidler
Age: 24
Nationality: English
A product off the everimpressive
Crewe
academy production
line, the midfielder, now
24, has firmly locked
down his position in the
Railwaymen’s midfield three
having properly announced
himself on the first team
stage three seasons ago.
The Alex’s upturn in form
is no surprise having been
in direct correlation to
Lowery’s growing influence
within the team, with the
midfielder contributing to
three goals in Crewe’s last
four League One games.
The Hitman
Mikael Mandron
Position: Forward
Age: 27
Nationality: French
The former Sunderland
forward made the switch to
Cheshire from Gillingham
promotion to League
One in 2020. Mandron,
deployed more on the right
this season currently sits at
the top of Crewe’s scoring
charts with six goals, having
won the club’s golden
boot last season with 14
goals in all competitions.
The forward most recently
scored in Alex’s important
2-1 victory over in form
Chalton Athletic, heeding
in Tom Lowery’s cross to
FROM THE SLO
with Dave Matthew-Jones
THIS AFTERNOON WE WELCOME THE SUPPORTERS,
OFFICIALS AND PLAYING STAFF OF CREWE ALEXANDRA
TO THE ABBEY STADIUM.
After the recent excitement of
playing Newcastle at St James’
Park in the FA Cup and the away
win at Lincoln, we need to start
off by thanking all the supporters
who travelled to these matches
and backed the team so well
throughout the games.
Both the team and supporters
have shown is possible when
you are United. When the two
come together, it is brilliant to
see and really shows what can be
achieved. I think we should also
mention the people of Newcastle
who made us so welcome over
the weekend. Being a football
supporter of a Club is about being
part of the wider family of football
supporters. We should always help
each other and work together to
improve the experiences of all
supporters across the country.
The re-launched CUFC Lottery
has undertaken several projects
during the last couple of
months in 2021. One of these
was when it purchased a new
wheelchair for the club to use on
Matchdays. When purchasing
medical equipment, you always
hope that it will never be used.
Unfortunately, it has been on
several occasions since it arrived.
At the recent Portsmouth match
there was an identified need
for a second basket stretcher to
be located at the ground and
the group has now purchased
one, which should be arriving
shortly. Thank you to all the lottery
members who support the scheme
and help towards improving the
facilities at the Abbey Stadium. If
you haven’t joined yet, visit
www.cufclottery.co.uk.
They have also worked with the
Cambridge Charity Fundraisers
to provide Christmas Day meal
packages and gifts for 15 families
living in the Abbey Ward, and
gave a financial donation to the
Abbey People group.
Finally, the group helped
supporters by sponsoring
the Away Travel Coaches to
Newcastle. Over two hundred
supporters travelled to Newcastle
using the coaches and bookings
are now being taken for upcoming
away games against Rotherham,
Fleetwood and Bolton Wanderers.
There is a need for more Abbey
Helpers and Programme Sellers on
Matchdays. If you are interested
in helping or know someone who
might be, please contact me on
07703274034 or dave.matthewjones@cambridge-united.
co.uk. These roles are important
and really improve the match
experience of everyone coming
to matches at the Abbey Stadium.
They are often the first people that
supporters meet and it is really
important that this contact is a
friendly, warm and informative one.
Memories Down
Afternoon, folks.
Hope you are all
well. For the usual
pragmatic deadlines
these notes are quite
early but I trust the
bubble of euphoria
is still inflated
following recent cup
advancements.
22nd January is an
interesting date in the life
history of Cambridge United
but during the 2010/11
season in the Conference,
we saw an entertaining
fixture at the Abbey against
Wrexham. Lest we forget
that nine seasons after
leaving the dreaded our
friends in north Wales are
still there. Sobering.
At the time Wrexham
were flying in the play-off
positions whilst the U’s were
floundering in the lower half
of the table. By half-time the
game was effectively over as
the Dragons had cruised to
a three goal lead with Andy
Mangan, Chris Blackburn
Scan me to
read the archive
programme...
and Matias Pogba, brother of
Paul, hitting the onion bag.
Robbie Wilmott pulled one
back just before the hour, but
it was to be a consolation
only. The Wrexham line-up
had some interesting names
that day, coached by a certain
Dean Saunders. Frank Sinclair,
Dean Keates, Andy Morrell
and Chris Maxwell all featuring
for the team that day.
That season Wrexham ended
up in the play-offs and we
were stuck in 17th position
on 50 points and a goal
difference of -8. Poor. One
thing of positivity. Errea from
Italy were producing our kit
at the time. Hardly the most
imaginative of designs but
the shade of amber remains
up there in the pantheon and
spot knocking-off of both
previous and subsequent
colours.
Enjoy the game and keep
safe. Remember, there’s
only one United.
Habbin
IT’S BEEN A BIT OF A RAILWAY THEMED
WEEK AS FAR AS OUR FIXTURES HAVE
FALLEN THIS WEEK.
First of all, Doncaster Rovers came looking for
points but ended up shunted into a siding while
our tiring squad made away with the points.
Apologies for that, but Doncaster remains a
railway town and the same could be said of Crewe.
For an away fan, Crewe station would be the best
thing about the town and only because it is very
close to the ground. Decent pubs are few and far
between and queries about nightlife are likely to
result in quizzical glances and derisive laughter. No
doubt this is a little unfair, but it’s not like visiting
York or Lincoln where the buildings are more
welcoming than the people. Maybe they see fans
as mere tourists?
Anyway, last time we were in Crewe, United were
in the midst of a seven game run without a win and
things were feeling a little desperate. We scrapped
our way to a 2-2 draw, scoring in the very last minute,
epitomising the fighting spirit we have seen time and
time again in our team this season. Since the triumph
at Newcastle, which I may have mentioned in the last
programme, we have beaten Portsmouth, Lincoln and
Doncaster. All this despite looking out on our feet at
times. The cumulative effect of giving your all week
in and week out, is that sometimes we look tired and
leggy as we did against Doncaster.
There is a lot more quality in this team than many
of us realised. Certainly Big Joe and Dimi Mitov are
as good as anyone, but Jack Lankester is beginning
to look the business, Harrison has been reborn and
James Brophy is showing his critics that they spoke
Timothy Morton
Everything is a railway junction,
where past and future are sliding over one
another, not touching.
way too soon. I suspect that the squad could do with
being a little bigger so that some players can be
rested when needed and I hope that we have one or
two irons in the fire. Mind you, I wouldn’t want to be
the one to tell any of our players that they weren’t
in the team! That’s the spirit you want. Who knows
where it might get us this season.
As for Crewe, they are a real footballing side whose
style had echoes of West Ham in the sixties. Fans of
the Railwaymen have high expectations of their team
and would never settle for kick and rush. That should
guarantee a game really worth watching on Saturday.
We have a team who rely on skill rather than the dark
arts, practised by a number of the teams we have
seen here this season. Crewe are the same. I don’t
expect to see any of their players rolling about as if
shot or desperately pleading with the Referee to send
an opponent off, as if it is any of their business. Real
fans want to see skill not histrionics. Let’s hope we
get it from both sides
CATCH UP WITH EVERYTHING THATS
HAPPENED IN THE SKY BET LEAGUE ONE
SINCE WE LAST RAN OUT AT THE ABBEY...
Wigan Athletic produced a
battle-hardened performance to
help secure a come-from-behind
1-2 victory over Morecambe
at the Mazuma Stadium. The
Shrimps capitalised on early
pressure through Cole Stockton,
who pounced home his 16th of
the campaign. Another inspired
striker in Will Keane brought
the game back level on the
stroke of half-time, before a
resolute second-half display
proved decisive when substitute
Stephen Humphrys looped a
header into the top corner to
seal maximum points.
AFC Wimbledon’s rearguard
matched Portsmouth’s resistance
at Plough Lane on Tuesday night
as the sides battled to a stalemate.
Particularly in the second half,
Pompey applied a plethora of
pressure and grew into the game,
having the better chances but
ultimately rueing them. The best
opportunities of the game fell to
Mahlon Romeo, who clattered the
woodwork with a thunderous 30-
yard strike, and Sean Raggett, who
forced an astute save from Nik
Tzanev late on to ensure a share of
the spoils.
Cambridge United produced
arguably their most clinical
performance of the season as they
dispatched Doncaster Rovers 3-1
at the Abbey Stadium. Despite
enjoying several clear-cut chances,
the visitors were silenced on the
brink of half-time when Harvey
Knibbs slotted home with a clinical
striker’s finish. The lead was
doubled on the hour mark when
Harrison Dunk headed past Louis
Jones for his first goal since May
2018. Joe Dodoo conjured up an
instant consolation for Donny, but
the inspired U’s remained resolute
and killed the game off through
Sam Smith in added time.
With devastating forms from the
pace setters and gaps requiring
bridging near the basement, the
table is very much starting to take
shape. Nonetheless, don’t be
surprised if this division goes to
the wire.
Wycombe Wanderers remain the
cream of the crop thanks to a fourgame
unbeaten run. Frustratingly
for them, that may not be the case
for long, with Wigan a solitary
point behind with four extra games
in hand to play – it’s the perfect
opportunity for Leam Richardson’s
men, 16 unbeaten, to stamp further
authority on their rivals.
Level on 51 points are free-scoring
Sunderland, whose three-game
winless run has costed them
the chance of climbing to the
summit. A place and point behind
sits Rotherham United, whose
scheduled tie at home to Lincoln
City was postponed owing to a
frozen pitch. The Millers obtain
a couple of games advantage
and are ready for battle thanks
to boasting the sternest defence
that gas shipped just 18 goals.
Eager not to let the top four steer
away, MK Dons have a four-point
gap to make up – but a promising
January transfer window and
assuring recent form gives them a
real chance. Making up the play-off
picture are Plymouth Argyle, who
perhaps have shied away of late
after falling to five defeats in eight.
It’s a similar story for Oxford
United, whose eerily similar record
to the Pilgrims means they’re
level on points despite one win in
five. Sheffield Wednesday are in
8th – if they can switch draws into
wins, they’ll continue challenging.
Portsmouth remain on the
outskirts thanks to the sole defeat
in 12, a swift return to winning
ways is a necessity now.
In a congested area of the table, a
single point separates Accrington
Stanley, Ipswich Town and Burton
Albion respectively – with the
Lancashire side the most fruitful
despite shipping over 40 goals.
Enjoying the best season of the
promoted teams is Mark Bonner’s
U’s in 13th, who are four unbeaten
and purring at a key time. Two
points behind them is Cheltenham
Town, winless in eight and a shadow
of their pre-Christmas selves.
The same can be said about
Charlton Athletic – they’re now
situated in 15th and haven’t
tasted victory in 2022. Level on
points, but in contrasting form,
is Shrewsbury Town who have
generated real momentum of
late. Bolton Wanderers and
Lincoln City, sides who will feel
underwhelmed by their ranking,
sit five and four points clear of
the drop zone after inconsistent
flashes. Fleetwood Town, on the
contrary, are rejuvenated after one
defeat in six, but still need ground
to make. As do Wimbledon,
they’re afloat in 20th and need a
new win under their belt.
The first of the relegation pack
candidates are Morecambe. They’re
three points adrift and although
they’ve found the back of the net
numerously, the defence has been
vulnerable – conceding on average
just under two goals a game. Crewe
Alexandra, whose three of their
five wins have come in the past six,
need to continue this positive spell.
In an extremely bleak position are
Gillingham in 23rd - they last won
in October and are nine points from
safety - and Doncaster, five defeats
on the trot puts them rock bottom
and an alarming eleven points from
the target.
Tuesday 18th January, 2022 | Sky Bet League One | The Abbey
The U’s won a fourth straight
game in a tough contest against
struggling Rovers, as goals from
Harvey Knibbs, Harrison Dunk and
Sam Smith secured all three points.
After coming under significant
pressure during the first half, a
swift counter attack was finished
off by Knibbs to give United a
slender half-time lead.
The U’s came out strong after
the break and doubled their lead
thanks to Harrison Dunk’s powerful
header, before Rovers got back
into the game to half their deficit.
Another counter-attack as
added time was indicated made
sure of the points, as Brophy
found Smith inside the box to
make for a comfortable final
minutes of the match.
Another Saturday and
another great game to
look forward to with
today’s visit of Crewe
Alexandra.
On behalf of everyone
connected with the Women’s
team, I would like to wish Mark
and all the players and staff the
very best of luck for today.
Last Sunday saw the Women’s
team finally get to play! After the
disappointment of the previous
week’s postponement, we all
eagerly looked forward to the
County Cup semi-final against
Eaton Socon. It was a chance to
give some of the new players
game time as we look to get them
integrated into the group and
playing to our system, but also a
chance for the other players to get
some much needed match time.
The game started at a fast pace
from the U’s and it took just 90
seconds for Laura Mitchell to open
the scoring after a good delivery
into the area by Alysha Stojko-
Down. The U’s totally dominated
the whole game and ended up
with a 13-0 score-line, despite
the heroics of Keeley Robinson
in the visitors goal who pulled off
a string of fine saves. Credit to
Eaton Socon who worked hard
throughout the whole game. The
scorers were Mitchell x6, Gisela
Otten x2, Amy Howlett x2, Ruth
Fox x 2 and Abbi Griffin. We now
await details of the final where we
will face St Ives Town.
This Sunday sees us back in
league action where we host QPR
at St Neots Town FC with a 2pm
kick off. It’s another stern test, but
one we are all looking forward
to. Remember that all U’s season
ticket holders are admitted free
and pay on the gate is just £3 for
adults. Hopefully see some of you
there! Enjoy the game today and
let’s get behind the lads!
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
Cambridge United U18s
2-0 Leeds United U18s
Cambridge United marched
towards the Fifth Round of
the FA Youth Cup with a
commendable 2-0 victory against
Category One outfit Leeds
United at the Abbey Stadium on
Wednesday night.
Kai Yearn handed United the
dream start with a sublime freekick.
It only generated further
momentum for the inspired hosts,
who doubled the advantage
through Brandon Njoku’s tidy
finish. The professionalism on
show from the young shoulders
was impeccable, seeing the game
out with assurance to secure a
home tie against Nottingham
Forest in the next round.
Jimmy Unwin made two changes
to the side that proved heroic from
the spot in the previous round
– with Jaydyn Lott and Nathan
Brathwaite entering the fold.
Anticipation was in the air ahead
of what would be a valuable
experience for the young
U’s against stern opposition.
Occupying 9th in the Premier
League North, the two-time
winners dispatched Coventry
City 1-4 in the Third Round and
would be eager to bounce back
from a 0-5 dismantling against
Blackburn Rovers in their previous
match. Despite being labelled
the underdogs, the hosts had
every reason to be optimistic as
they sat 2nd in the Youth Alliance
League and of course had enjoyed
an excellent run to date, edging
out Southend United, Corinthian-
Casuals and Oxford United enroute.
In the last 32 of the competition
for the first time since 2016/17,
a squad which was managed by
Mark Bonner and captained by
Harry Darling, United started in an
energetic mood. Full of hunger,
they worked up a neat spell in the
final third straight from kick-off
resulting in a 20-yard attempt
from Glenn McConnell which was
blazed wide.
Their early endeavour paid off
on the 16th minute when the U’s
deservedly broke the deadlock.
A defence-splitting pass found
Saleem Akanbi who was racing
away before being brought
down on the edge of the box. As
composed as you like, prodigy
Yearn stepped up and fired home
a delightful effort into his far left
corner, giving Harry Christy no
chance.
The hosts were throwing the
kitchen sink at the Whites with
constant blistering attacks. On 22,
the unplayable Yearn picked out
Njoku from the left with the striker
hitting it first time but he couldn’t
find the corner as it flew wide.
Fifteen minutes later, an
applaudable piece of play almost
resulted in a second when the
dazzling feet of Glenn McConnell
evaded several defenders
before on the turn unleashing an
audacious curler which rattled
the crossbar. One-way traffic
continued to ensue – the hosts
had been phenomenal against
their Premier League opponents.
To a man, they were breaking
down play exceptionally and
putting in some shift.
The advantage was doubled
and delirium was sparked on
the 39th minute when Njoku
was slipped in astutely before
converting with real composure
for United’s 10th goal of the cup
campaign. Two to the good, they
were in dreamland and cruising
heading into half-time.
Unwin’s boys’ application to the
second half was strong - limiting
Leeds to very few opportunities
and still possessing an attacking
threat of their own. After 65
minutes, the visitors did have
the ball in the back of the net
when Ben Andreucci marauded
forwards to try and win a long ball.
He achieved it, but took it out of
the gloves of Tom Finch in the
process, before the referee ruled
out the attempt.
With 74 minutes gone and the
hosts looking great value for
victory, a majestic floating ball
from Yearn found the industrious
Njoku who picked his spot from
inside the box and cannoned an
attempt that Christy parried for a
corner.
Calm and collected when called
upon, Finch met Lui Bradbury’s
angled attempt from six yards
with assurance five minutes
later. Scott Gardner’s side were
understandably posing a threat,
but they couldn’t get behind the
U’s stubborn backline.
From the first minute to the
last, the boys in amber had
been superior and a cut above
their higher level opponents.
Referee Eji Ejise blew his whistle
for the final time to conclude a
memorable night for all concerned
at Cambridge United – they’d
been truly rampant and their
magical run was showing no signs
of slowing down as they embarked
on the Last 16 of the prestigious
competition.
We are just three weeks away from the
United for Cambridge Sleepout, which
is taking place on Friday 11th February.
49 brave souls have already signed up
to what we hope will be the biggest and
best sleepout event yet.
In a bid to connect the entire community
in support of homeless and vulnerable
people in the City, Wintercomfort for
the Homeless and Cambridge United
Community Trust are reaching out to U’s
fans to take part in a Cambridge-wide
event. We have got teams from local
businesses such as D&A Recruitment, Hill
Group and the Co-Op already on board,
and we are hoping to get as many United
fans as possible to come and join us and
sleepout on the terraces of the Abbey
Stadium once again!
Participants taking part are asked
to fundraise at least £100. There is a
£20 registration which pays for dinner
and entertainment on the evening of
the event.
Fundraising and Communications Manager
Melody Brooker explains, “Homelessness
is a serious challenge in Cambridge and
we believe that as a community, we can all
play a part in helping to improve the lives
of those in greatest need. The United for
Cambridge Sleepout Night will be a fun
but poignant way to connect us all and to
raise awareness and funds for these two
vital local charities.”
Whilst it’s not the most comfortable night’s
sleep you might have each year, it is
definitely the most memorable and we
encourage all U’s fans to come along
and take part. You will be making a
tangible difference in the lives of
those most in need in our city.
Call 01223632129 to sign up or
Finally, good luck to the team today as
they aim to make it five wins in a row!
view from the
with Doug Shulman...
ANOTHER WIN FOR MARK BONNER’S MEN ON
TUESDAY AT HOME TO DONCASTER EXTENDED THEIR
UNBEATEN RUN TO FIVE GAMES IN ALL COMPETITION
AND JUST TWO LOSSES IN THE PAST TEN, WITH SEVEN
OF THOSE MATCHES ENDING IN VICTORY.
Needless to say, the U’s are in
a good place right now, sitting
13th in the League One table
and with interest in both the FA
Cup and EFL Trophy continuing.
A winning mentality is as difficult
to derail as it is to build, so they
deserve full credit for staying
focussed on all fronts, in the
face of a fixture list which has
not really relented since earlier
in the campaign. In fact, the
success over Doncaster was,
remarkably, their 16th Tuesday
evening fixture of the season.
Even more impressively they have
lost just three of those games,
which perfectly underlines their
resilience.
Talking of resilience, I was pleased
to see Harrison Dunk bulge the
proverbial onion bag against
Donny. The U’s left-back thumped
in a header to record his first goal
since a 5-0 victory over Port Vale
on the final day of the 2017/18
campaign so, after 139 games
without one, he was somewhat
overdue! His resurgence this year
has been brilliant to watch and,
he has become an integral part of
the starting XI in League One, as
was the case in League Two and,
before that, the Conference. Not
so much part of the furniture, but
perhaps the furniture itself!
His 266 Football League
appearances have moved him
into 7th place in that statistical
table, where he is amongst elite
company in the guise of Alan
Kimble, Paul Wanless, Tom Finney,
John Taylor and the two Steve’s,
Fallon and Spriggs, all of whom sit
just above him.
Both Harvey Knibbs and Jack
Lankester also impressed on
Tuesday night, after previously
biding their time on the subs
bench, working hard in training
or relying on cup outings to turn
the head of the coaching staff.
For Jack, there has been the
conundrum of injury to contend
with too, so to see the two play an
integral part in the win, including
assistance and conversion of a
timely first goal just before the
break, adds genuine competition
and will surely boost their
confidence even higher.
FIRST OF ALL, I WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL THE FANS
WHO HAVE SO FAR WRITTEN TO THEIR MPS ABOUT THE
FANS LED REVIEW. CFU HAVE BEEN DOING THE SAME.
This is the response we got from
Daniel Zeichner.
Dear Andrew,
Thank you for writing to me about
the fan-led review. On Thursday (25
November 2021), the Government
was asked to make a statement
following the publication of the
independent Fan-led Review of
Football Governance. As a proud
supporter of Cambridge United
Football Club I want to see a
football community driven by fans
such as you and me rather than
solely profit making enterprises with
football clubs having to manage
large debt liabilities to survive.
The fan-led review calls for the
Government to create a new
independent regulator for English
football (IREF), and for the IREF
to oversee financial regulation in
football. It calls for new owners’ and
directors’ tests for football clubs
and a new approach to corporate
governance to support a long-term
sustainable future of the game. It
notes that football needs to improve
equality, diversity and inclusion in
clubs with committed action plans
regularly assessed by the regulator.
The review recommends that
supporters should be properly
consulted by their clubs in taking
key decisions by means of a
Shadow Board. It also says that
since football clubs are a vital part
of our local communities, there
should be additional protection
for key items of club heritage. It
further recommends that the Premier
League should guarantee its financial
support to the football pyramid
and make additional, proportionate
contributions to further support
football. In addition, it calls for
women’s football to be treated with
parity and given its own dedicated
review and for the welfare of players
exiting the game – particularly at a
young age – to be better protected
as a matter of urgency.
Responding to the review in
the House of Commons, the
Sport Minister said it required a
substantive response and plan of
action from across Government.
He said the Government endorsed
in principle the recommendation
that football requires a strong,
independent regulator and would
start work to deliver it.
I welcome the review. We have
known for a very long time that
football is broken, and I have long
supported calls for an independent
regulator to fix it. I am concerned
that the Government has only
stated that it is endorsing this
recommendation “in principle”.
Furthermore, as the review makes
clear, the recommendations need
to be seen as a package – cherrypicking
recommendations will simply
lead to a botched reform. I believe
the Government needs to accept all
of the review’s recommendations,
including both the principle and the
detail of the independent regulator,
which it should enshrine in law
without any further delay.
I will continue to follow and engage
with this issue in Parliament.
Yours sincerely,
Daniel Zeichner
Member of Parliament for Cambridge
daniel@danielzeichner.co.uk
Daniel is of course a
died in the wool Cambridge
United supporter but we
should expect a similar
response from our MP,
whoever they are.
Many people believe that
contacting politicians is a
waste of time. Not so. They
respond to pressure and I
believe that every single
letter they get makes a
difference. Our victory at
Newcastle shows just why the
integrity of the game should
be protected.
I urge you to join the
campaign if you have not
already done so. I would like
to thank our members for their
patience as we have tried to
sort out the system for having
priority for cup tickets.
CFU members are entitled
to one match ticket in phase
4 of the ticketing system
alongside fans with two or
more loyalty points. We are
grateful to the club for their
efforts in clarifying how this
should happen and hopefully
in the future there will be no
confusion.
CFU and the club have
a good and productive
relationship and this is
another example of it.
Up the U’s!
