SUSTAINABLE FUTURES
Sustainable Futures
We believe creative education has a major role to
play in shaping a better world.
Throughout the HCA community you will find
people passionately committed to addressing the
challenges of climate crisis.
HCA has a dynamic sustainability working group
with students, staff and governors working
together to develop education for a sustainable
future. We aim to look after the planet and
supports sustainable jobs.
All our degree programmes will ask you to
consider issues around sustainability and support
you to think about the decisions you make and
the positive impact you can have as a creative.
HCA is proud to be an official ‘Race to Zero’
signatory working with others across education to
reduce carbon emissions.
14
SUSTAINABLE FUTURES
Hereford College of Arts recognises the climate
change emergency is one of the most urgent
problems facing human society and life on our
planet.
•
We recognise the interconnection of
environmental and financial sustainability
as embodied in the UN sustainable
development agenda which says that ‘For
sustainable development to be achieved, it
is crucial to harmonize three core elements:
economic growth, social inclusion and
environmental protection. These elements are
interconnected, and all are crucial for the wellbeing
of individuals and societies’.
•
We are optimistic for the future as we know
that human knowledge and changes in human
behaviour can make a difference and address
the crisis.
•
As an educational institution with a mission
to empower creativity to enrich our world we
embrace the responsibility to take action to
reduce our carbon footprint and support an
environmentally sustainable future.
•
We recognise action is essential and that
this involves both institutional and personal
choices. We will work with students and staff
to change institutional practices and facilitate
individuals to make personal decisions that
support a healthy environment.
• We believe sustainable development requires a
whole college approach and should be addressed
within the curriculum and culture as well as within
the college estate and operations.
•
We are committed to collaborating with partners to
learn from best practice and raise awareness and
will. For example, draw on expertise and ideas from
the NUS through SOS (Students Organising for
Sustainability) and the new Climate Commission
for UK Higher and Further Education Leaders
(launched November 2019) as well as our validating
university UWTSD.

FAQs
Frequently
asked Questions
What about my travel
arrangements?
If you wish to study a full time Further Education
course at Hereford College of Arts and you live
more than 3 miles from the Folly Lane college
campus then you may be entitled to apply for a
subsidised travel pass. Please ensure you have
applied by 31st July at the latest
For further information, please contact the
Registry Department on 01432 273359 or email
registry@hca.ac.uk.
Will I continue to study English and
maths at college?
All students aged 16-18 studying a further
education course at Hereford College of Arts
will also study English and maths alongside their
chosen subject area unless they have already
achieved a GCSE at grade 4 / grade C or above
in both subjects. We believe that it is essential
that students have the opportunity to develop
these skills in preparation for the academic
demands of higher education and to improve their
employment prospects. Students work towards
qualifications in either GCSE or Functional Skills,
whichever is the most appropriate.
How will my work be assessed once
I’m on the course?
On the majority of courses, projects will be short
and specialised to give you an insight into the
wealth of subject areas within art and design,
digital and interactive media, performing arts
or music. There will be regular assessments
throughout the course. In the second year, the
project work for the final assessment will take the
form of a final exhibition or performance.
How do I know how well I am
progressing on the course?
Your projects will be assessed throughout the
course and there will be regular tutorials where
you will get feedback. You will also receive your
own Individual Learning Plan (ILP) which sets out
your learning goals and objectives and will enable
you to track your progress on the course.
82
FAQs
Is any homework set?
There are tasks in each project that have to be
completed. These may take the form of journals
and reflective evaluations to support creative/
practical work. What is required will vary from
course to course, but we do expect students to
work to the best of their ability at all times and
to work in the evenings and at weekends when
required. This is absolutely necessary if you want
to achieve grades higher than a pass and if you
have hopes of progressing to university.
How do you let my parents know I
am making good progress?
We send out reports to parents/guardians
twice a year. The report includes details on your
attendance and progress. We invite parents/
guardians into college to discuss the reports and
to view your current work. In year two, we invite
parents/guardians to an information evening
to discuss higher education (university) UCAS
applications and progression options.
Are any educational
visits organised?
We normally arrange trips about once a term, to
visit places of interest. These include exhibitions,
locations overseas, galleries and theatres – and
act as a resource for project research.
Will I get any help or advice
if I want to go to University
or College?
Yes! Approximately 80% of our college-level
students go on to university or college. You may
choose to stay on and apply to one of our BA
(Hons) degree courses here at Hereford College
of Arts. Wherever you decide to go, we can
provide practical support and help with UCAS
applications, your choices, interview techniques,
portfolio building, and mock interviews.
Will I have an opportunity to exhibit
my work or to perform?
At the end of each academic year, the College
hosts a public exhibition for students who are
leaving. Final year performing arts and music
students put on major performances throughout
the year. Music students also perform gigs
throughout the year.
