from the
in 1910, the University of Queensland
began as a university for ‘the people’,
and this still rings true 100 years on.
in our Centenary year, we recognise
‘the people’ – those staff, students
and alumni – who have contributed
to UQ’s transformation into a leading
higher education and researchintensive
institution with global reach
and impact.
We are especially proud of our
alumni and the valuable contributions
you are making in local, national and
international communities. the University
is also grateful for your support – both
philanthropic and reputational – which
has allowed us to flourish in our first 100
years, and which will see us continue on
this path in our second century.
the changes UQ has experienced
have been dynamic and diverse. i invite
you to celebrate a century of learning,
research and achievement during the
alumni reunion Weekend. a diverse
program of activities, events and reunions
is on offer. i look forward to seeing you
one of the key characteristics of the
world today is the fact that it is
changing more rapidly than ever
before. Be that the number of people
this tour will provide you with an
informative commentary of the historic
subjects on the forgan Smith tower
the foundation of the University of
universities, and discover fascinating
insights on the grotesques, flora and
fauna subjects on the arches, and the
on the planet, the electronic gadgets
we have in our pockets or the food we
eat, the challenges and opportunities
are influencing every sector of our lives.
While there are certainly perils among
the changes, the ability to conquer the
problems and capitalise on the
opportunities will come down to
whether or not we are able to face the
future honestly and openly.
this lecture will explore the next
twenty years of australian history,
and will profile some of the exciting
research that could revolutionise what
happens next. part of the discussion
will centre on evidence that australia
is not facing up to these challenges
and is at risk of squandering significant
opportunities as a result. Be that said,
there is no doubt that the next twenty
years will be some of the most exciting
