MESA ’11 to feature an<br />

Stanford <strong>University</strong>’s Mediterranean <strong>Studies</strong> Forum, the Abbasi Program in Islamic <strong>Studies</strong>,<br />

and the Stanford Arts Initiative will be showcasing Turkish Film Posters from the collection<br />

<strong>of</strong> Stanford Libraries and Academic Information Resources. The exhibit will feature<br />

rare, yet highly sought-after, hand-drawn film posters that date back to the early 1950s<br />

<strong>of</strong>fering the best examples <strong>of</strong> the Turkish film industry’s golden years. Programming is partially<br />

made possible by the support <strong>of</strong> the Turkish Cultural Foundation, Stanford Division<br />

<strong>of</strong> Literatures, Cultures and Languages, and Stanford Center for Russian, <strong>East</strong> European<br />

and Eurasian <strong>Studies</strong>. A panel entitled, “Issues in Contemporary Turkish Cinema” (Friday,<br />

December 2, 2011 at 11:00am) will reinforce the exhibit with academic discussions on<br />

contemporary issues in Turkish cinema. For more information, contact Burcu Karahan at<br />

This year’s film selection includes<br />

the hauntingly beautiful feature film<br />

from Tajikistan, True Noon (Qiyami<br />

Roz). Directed by Nosir Saidov, the<br />

film highlights the disruptive negative<br />

effects <strong>of</strong> borders and boundaries.<br />

Passion, a feature film from<br />

Syria, beautifully demonstrates the<br />

simultaneous attraction and repulsion<br />

<strong>of</strong> music, poetry and natural human<br />

creativity. Conservative values meet<br />

innocent artistic expression.<br />

Exhibit <strong>of</strong> Turkish Film Posters<br />

MESA FilmFest is pleased to<br />

present The Oath, sponsored by the<br />

American Institute for Yemeni <strong>Studies</strong><br />

(AIYS). Laura Poitras’ documentary<br />

follows the story <strong>of</strong> Abu Jandal, Osama<br />

bin Laden’s former bodyguard.<br />

Viewers can expect a FilmFest<br />

panel, guest filmmakers, four feature<br />

films (to date), and 35 documentaries<br />

(still in deliberation). The FilmFest<br />

Committee is still in process finalizing<br />

accepted films.<br />
