Architecture and Landscape Design Portfolio

There is no ecological architecture, no intelligent
architecture and no sustainable architecture There is only
good architecture. There are always problems we must
not neglect. For example, energy, resources, costs, social
aspects, one must always pay attention to all these.

Overview
Through a research-led design process, the studio seeks to engage in the urban transformation debate
in Milan and, considering the study area from a systemic perspective, students are required to explore
visionary proposals for this green and blue new channel of energy and flows into and out of Milan.
The concomitant consideration of urban and natural systems is crucial in the definition of intervention
strategies, whereby new modes of interaction between such systems ought to be developed to reinforce
their potentialities.
What should be the nature of this new channel of energy and flows into and out of Milan? How should
the new gateways and key transformations be? How can landscape be a driver for the positive
transformation of Milan and its surrounding areas? The studio work is organised as follows: 1- Analysis
and strategic vision (definition of green-blue axis), 2- Strategic Masterplan, 3- Thematic Project.
Green-Blue Strategy

Detailed Masterplan
In order to come up with the strategic master plan, we had to choose an specific area
taken out of the green-blue strategy. The selected site is located on both sides of the
Naviglio Martesana due to its high potential for further development. Structures on
the northern side revolve around a multi-level botanical garden. This space is used to
experimentally breed certain tree species for the usage of environmental protection.
Also, the greenhouses located along the small cultivation patches are another
significant space in the northern part. Buildings on the western side are dedicated to
horticulture education and co-working spaces. Proposed building on the southern part
of the site also interact closely with proposed nature-based solutions and the ovalshaped
elevated walkway.

As for the vegetation selection, ancient crops are chosen for
cultivation such as wheat and amaranth. For the aquatic plants by
the ponds, we chose geophytes for energy and water storage. As for
the botanical garden, we chose non-native trees and shrubs that are
rare, aesthetically pleasing, and environmentally beneficial. As for
the vegetation around the site and in our green patches, we selected
some native trees and shrubs. The trees are located in the site
conscious of their function, height, and width.
The section below demonstrates how nature-based solutions are
considered in this project. The proposed bioswales and infiltration
trenches diversify the range of habitats in the southern edge of
the site which affects the level of biodiversity. Pervious paving and
the retention ponds allow the absorbed water to be collected and
used within the irrigation system. Aside from its aesthetical value,
the vegetation dominance created by the proposed green belt in
multiple levels ameliorates the air quality and decreases the amount
of air and noise pollution existing in the area.

Site Area 220 m²
This project focuses on intelligent design responses to the challenges of making architecture in challenging
locations. The field of operation is an island in the southern Venetian lagoon, where due to climate change,
the relationship to the sea will require specific responses.Every person was asked to develop a design
responding to the dilemmas of contemporary and future architecture, which values the care and responsible
use of resources for designing a self-sufficient house.
There are five strategies which were asked to be undertaken during the design development: 1. Occupy Ruins
2. Protection from Aqua Alta 3. New Ground / Platforms 4. Living Lightly 5. Timber Construction. The
program demanded a single-family house with basic living spaces and spaces dedicated to the activity of
those
who live there. A space to sleep, a space to eat, a space to work, a space to stay, a space to store, a space to
recover the boat a space to collect water
16
17
INDOOR ROOM(S): Following the habits and rituals of daily life the spaces of the house
will relate to the daily activities of: living / cooking / sleeping / bathing.
OUTDOOR ROOM(S): The outdoor room(s) will be investigated from a seasonal and functional
point of view.
Construction Details
Eventhough the proposed timber structure tries to demonstate a lightweight and easy to
assemble example of its kind, it retrofit the statical characteristic of the existing elements and
it does not replace any of the remaining ruins all over the island territory.
Conceptual Approach (Lnadscape Iconography)
As you may notice in the upper figures,
the form and the functions have been
developed according to the strategically
defined design program. The cognitive
character of the existing elements
in the island (lighthouse, walls and
columns)and its surrounding areas has
been studied in detail, what so-called
"Landscape Iconography".

The proposed project for this design studio tried to address a type of study and research
area that is not something new and is part of the historical development of European
universities.
The program leads to a central meeting point at Lichtwiese campus at TU Darmstadt which
encompasses spaces with multiple functions not only for research and work but also
for living, physical activities, and entertainment. A forum in which the professional and
emotional requirements of the community enter into a sensitive relationship, which aims to
explore energy flows and bring them together in the best possible sense.
As shown above, the patterns and volumes of the existing structures have been dissected
to integrate within the design process. Green walls, curved-roof structures, courtyards, and
exposed staircases are some of those elements Also the building form is derived from the
fact of respecting the vegetation boundaries.

Due to partial blockage of sunlight by high trees at the
site, the fully glazed facade has been proposed along
with vertical timber-made louvers. The spaces located
at the center of the plan are mostly exposed to open
to sky courtyard.

Two spiral staircases located within semi-open
atriums complement the vertical circulation between
all the floors. A double-story sports field has been
proposed on the northeastern edge of the project
which can be accessed from both the basement and
ground floor with the view towards the field from
inside and outside. of the building.

Embracing the surrounding landscape is the most prominent feature
of the proposed form. The space arrangement within this project
guarantees maximum visual and physical integration with the existing
vegetation.
The figures below demonstrate the interventions to achieve a more
resilient environment. The roof's concavity ensures the maximum
absorption of the sunlight by solar panel tiles due to its compatibility
with the annual sun pattern. The excessive sunlight provided by the
central courtyard leads to a reduction of consumed energy for lighting
and heating purposes.

Syria struggled with a civil war forc ouple of years which led half of its total population fo
to move away from their homes, creating the second largest refugee crisis after the World
War II. Furthermore, The conflict has damaged or completely destroyed a third of the total
existing residential buildings. What role can Architects play among this chaos? How can
we convince the people who fled to come back to their land?
Currently the recovering process after war is vastly flawed with replacing the ruins with
similar structures. Constructing large-scale housing projects needs a well-thought urban
planning which takes considerable amount of time and such process does not mee the

flexible structure to be assembled in a reasonable amount of time and later to be replaced
by a permanent structure.

This unique structure is inspired by Shigeru Ban’s Tamedia building
in Zurich. The unique joints system allows for a more efficient
construction in a much faster time with less amount of work force
This of course, suits this subject perfectly as time and resources are
quite limited in this case. Cyprus woods and Quercus libani which
are both known to be for theirdurability and strength are used in the
making of this structure

Problem
Thirty percent of the world’s population are living in extreme hot and humid climates
where the average temperature more than 30 degrees Celsius for more than half a year,
This phenomenon highly affects the amount of energy consumed by building sector. Food
production is another very important matter which suffers in harsh climates like Arid, Hot
Semi-Arid Desert and Tropical Rainforest; therefore it leads to high amount of imported
goods which could be produced locally.
Solution
The proposed structure is a mixed-usetower which hosts urban agricultural fields as a food
source for the residents. Movable units allow residents to adjust the amount of light and
heat by moving their units back and forward. Provided vertical gardens cool the circulated
air through the atrium.
