THE RAINBOW ROOM
What They Do:
• Independently, or in collaboration with “rainbow room” groups, work to meet
the tangible needs of children receiving CPS services in Wood County.

A Rainbow Room is an emergency resource center available to CPS
caseworkers to help them meet the critical needs of abused and neglected
children. It consists of a store-like setting that allows Child Protective Services
workers to go “shopping” for the children and families on their caseloads. The
room is stocked with new items such as clothing, shoes, toys and games,
diapers, formula, school supplies, hygiene products and cleaning
products. Every item in the Rainbow Room is donated or purchased from
donations. It is operated completely by Child Welfare and Protection Board
volunteers, and there is no state or federal funding support.
Wood County’s Rainbow Room was established and dedicated in May 1998 by
Laura Bush, the wife of then Texas Governor George W. Bush. As the First Lady
of Texas, she hoped to see Rainbow Rooms in every area of the state that had
a CPS office.
• Host holiday celebrations and other special events for caseworkers and foster
children
• Provide support for family group decision making meetings, foster parent
training, and foster youth conferences
• Sponsor public awareness events to promote child abuse prevention and recruit
foster and adoptive homes
• Coordinate with courts and judges in pioneering solutions that support
children and families and work to eliminate abuse and neglect.
