Leopoldstadt (12A) 140 MINS
27 JANUARY 7PM
A new play by Tom Stoppard. Directed by Patrick Marber
Tom Stoppard’s Olivier Award-winning new play Leopoldstadt is a
passionate drama of love, family and endurance.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Leopoldstadt was the old, crowded
Jewish quarter of Vienna, Austria. But Hermann Merz, a factory owner and
baptised Jew now married to Catholic Gretl, has moved up in the world.
We follow his family’s story across half a century, passing through the
convulsions of war, revolution, impoverishment, annexation by Nazi
Germany and the Holocaust. A company of 40 actors represent each
generation of the family in this epic, but intimate play. Filmed live on
stage in London’s West End, ‘Tom Stoppard’s masterpiece is magnificent’
(Independent) and should not be missed. Tickets £10
The Book of Dust (12A) 180 MINS
17 FEBRUARY 7PM
by Philip Pullman, adapted by Bryony Lavery directed by Nicholas Hytner
Set twelve years before the epic His Dark Materials trilogy, this gripping
adaptation revisits Philip Pullman’s fantastical world in which waters
are rising and storms are brewing. Two young people and their dæmons,
with everything at stake, find themselves at the centre of a terrifying
manhunt. In their care is a tiny child called Lyra Belacqua, and in that child
lies the fate of the future. And as the waters rise around them, powerful
adversaries conspire for mastery of Dust: salvation to some, the source
of infinite corruption to others. Eighteen years after his ground-breaking
production of His Dark Materials at the National Theatre, director Nicholas
Hytner returns to Pullman’s parallel universe. Broadcast live from London’s
Bridge Theatre. Tickets £10

Viva Youth Theatre
16 - 19 JUNE
Join Viva Youth Theatre on a tale of rebellion and
a gleefully witty ode to the anarchy of childhood
and the power of imagination! This story of a girl

inspires will have audiences rooting for the "revolting
children" who are out to teach the grown-ups a
lesson.
Matilda has astonishing wit, intelligence... and special
powers! Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth
sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress,
Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves
thinking up new punishments for those who don't
abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and
cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school
pupils' saving grace! Children and adults alike will be
thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little

LATE WORKS 1950-1954
A HAYWARD GALLERY TOURING EXHIBITION
THE VIVA THEATRE (THE LOFT)
23 APRIL - 22 MAY 2022
The French painter, sculptor and designer, Henri
Matisse (1869-1954) was one of the 20th century’s
most influential artists. His vibrant works are
celebrated for their extraordinary richness and
luminosity of colour and his spectacular paper
cut-outs were his final triumph. Matisse: Drawing
with Scissors, a Hayward Gallery Touring exhibition
from the Southbank Centre features 35 posthumous
prints of the famous cut-outs that he produced in
the last four years of his life, when confined to his
bed. It includes many of his iconic images, such as
The Snail and the Blue Nudes. It comes to The Viva
Theatre, Soham for a month from 23 April 2022.
Matisse continued creating highly original works
into his eighties. For his cut-outs he used paper
hand-painted with gouache, which he carved into
with scissors: ‘the paper cut-out allows me to draw
in the colour … Instead of drawing the outline and
putting the colour inside it…I draw straight into the
colour’. The colours he used were so strong that he
was advised by his doctor to wear dark glasses.
The lithographic reproductions in this exhibition are
taken from a special double issue of Verve, a review
of art and literature, published by Matisse’s friend,
the critic and fine art publisher Tériade, in 1958,
four years after Matisse’s death. The publication
was planned during Matisse’s lifetime and the
first lithographic plates were prepared under his
direction a few days before he died.
Matisse began his working life as
a lawyer, before going to Paris to
study art in 1890. At first strongly
influenced by the Impressionists,
he soon created his own style,
using brilliant, pure colours, and
started making sculptures as well
as paintings. In 1905 he and his colleagues were
branded the Fauves (wild beasts) because of their
unconventional use of colour, and it was during this
time that he painted his celebrated Luxe, Calme et
Volupté (Luxury, Tranquillity and Delight).
‘There is no gap between my earlier pictures and
my cut-outs’, Matisse wrote; ‘I have only reached
a form reduced to the essential through greater
absoluteness and greater abstraction’.

27 MAY 7.30PM
The hills are alive with the return of this
critically acclaimed Off Broadway and West
End hit.
This charming yet cheeky cabaret takes
an engaging look at fame and fandom,
through the eyes and voice of award-winning
performer Sarah-Louise Young (Fascinating
Aida, An Evening Without Kate Bush, La Soirée,
Showstopper! The Improvised Musical).
Julie's songs from musicals including Mary
Poppins, The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady
are intertwined with stories and anecdotes
about Andrews' own life, from her beginnings
as a child star to the more recent challenges
of losing her famous singing voice. What
emerges is a delightfully funny and candid
love letter to a true show business survivor.
‘Even your critic found herself,
unprecedentedly, singing along. My cheeks
hurt with smiling.’ **** DAILY TELEGRAPH

DANCE & THEATRE
23 APRIL 7.30PM
BLACKLIST / FIGLEAF
A double bill of shows from one of the UK’s leading Krump
dancers. Krump: a form of street dance characterised by free,
expressive, exaggerated, and highly energetic movement. It’s the
Rock and Roll or Heavy Metal of the Hip Hop world, a way of
expressing difficult emotions, the ones that get you all twisted
up inside.
Blacklist is an explosive piece asking how do we
cope with inner conflict? Delving into brotherhood,
isolation and friendship explored through hip hop,
krump and theatre.
Fig Leaf asks what does it mean to be a man?
And when does masculinity become toxic?
Swinging from love and support, to anger
and aggression. The dancers fight the urge
to compete with one another and instead
attempt to create a support network,
brotherhood and community bond.
Tickets £12
SENSE & SENSIBILITY
4 -7 MAY 7.30PM
VIVA THEATRE COMPANY
A playful new adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved novel follows the fortunes (and misfortunes) of the
Dashwood sisters, sensible Elinor and hypersensitive Marianne, after their father’s sudden death leaves
them financially destitute and socially vulnerable.
Set in gossipy late 18th-century England, with a fresh female voice, the play is full of humour,
emotional depth, and bold theatricality. Sense & Sensibility examines our reactions, both reasonable
and ridiculous, to societal pressures. When reputation is everything, how do you follow your heart?
This production is an adaptation by American actress, Kate Hamill and it has never been performed
here in the UK. Join Viva Theatre Company for a fast-paced, physical and thoroughly entertaining
rendition of the classic novel. Tickets £12.50
