Montpelier Alive
Announces a Special
Winter Art Walk in the
Capital City
Award-winning ice carver Murray Long of Wicked Good
Ice will be featured at Montpelier Alive’s Art Walk, supported
by Northfield Savings Bank, on Friday, February 4th from 4-7
p.m. Watch Long in action as he puts the finishing touches on
a sculpture made especially for the Capital City in City Hall
Plaza. Attendees at February’s Art Walk will also enjoy art by
local and regional artists at 18 vendors throughout Montpelier.
Art Walk provides a fun and casual way to experience art,
meet local artists, and explore downtown Montpelier shops,
restaurants, and galleries. Participants can pick up an Art Walk
guidebook and begin their walk at any of the presenting venues.
In addition to the ice sculpture at City Hall Plaza, this
month’s Art Walk will feature new mixed-media work by Susan
Calza at the Susan Calza Gallery on Main St., as well as
Paul Markowitz’s mobiles on view at Three Penny Taproom.
Carolyn Shapiro’s drawings, paintings and sculptures will be
on display at City Hall. John Snell will present a slideshow
on the porch at Montpelier’s newest restaurant, Hugo’s, and
Brian Slopey will display his nature-based photographs at
North Branch Café. The Front, CAL, and T.W. Wood Gallery
are among many of the regular venues who always have new
and interesting art on the walls.
For more information on participating venues and artists,
visit montpelieralive.org/artwalk.
Montpelier Alive celebrates the City of Montpelier. We
work with partners to sustain and build upon Montpelier’s vibrant
downtown community by offering and supporting special
events and activities and by promoting city businesses. We
work to ensure a thriving local economy for Montpelier and to
preserve the city’s historic character and unique sense of place.

Webinar Explores
Ways to Buy Local
A free webinar, “Innovative Ways to Sell Agricultural Products
Direct to Consumers,” will be offered in both English and
French on February 15. While geared to agritourism operators
and others working with and studying local food systems, anyone
is welcome to participate.
The webinar is part of the monthly series, Virtual Agritourism
Gatherings, hosted by University of Vermont Extension
and the International Workshop on Agritourism. The series
features a wide range of agritourism topics with global appeal
with sessions led by industry experts.
The first hour (11 a.m.-12 p.m.) of this webinar will be conducted
in English and the second in French (12-1 p.m.). Advance
registration is required at http://go.uvm.edu/agtourismgatherings.
Please contact Becky Bartlett at (802) 257-7967,
ext. 301, if requiring a disability-related accommodation to
participate.
Agritourism experts from Ontario, southern Quebec and the
Aube region of France will discuss innovative ways to promote
agri-food products in local markets, purchase locally
sourced supplies and sell direct to consumers. The discussion
also will focus on initiatives to promote local products and
short distribution chains to bring producers in closer contact
with consumers to limit the number of go-betweens.
David Gillespie, a farmer and community organizer from
Pontiac, Quebec, will serve as moderator for the webinar.
“The French consider food as a central part of their culture,
be it in Europe, Africa or North America,” Gillespie said.
“Wherever you go, the French take great pride in their culinary
displays at the farm, the markets and restaurants.
“This is the first time in this webinar series that we explore
their culture and how they value food. We decided to offer the
webinar in both languages to provide an opportunity for those
who can only understand French to be able to see what their
colleagues practice.”
Future webinar topics include Culinary Innovation on the
Farm (March 1), Agritourism and Wellness (April 5) and Agritourism
Networking Session (May 10). All webinars are recorded
and can be viewed at www.agritourismworkshop.com/
gatherings-past.

VT Fish & Wildlife Urges Us to Remember
Nongame Wildlife Tax Checkoff
Vermonters can express their passion for wildlife conservation
by donating to the Nongame Wildlife Fund on their state
income tax form this year, according to the Vermont Fish and
Wildlife Department. The fund helps protect some of
Vermont’s most threatened wildlife such as bald eagles, lake
sturgeon, rare plants, and Indiana bats.
“Every dollar Vermonters donate to Nongame Wildlife
Fund on their taxes is nearly tripled,” says Rosalind Renfrew,
Fish and Wildlife’s Wildlife Diversity Program Manager.
“Donations are leveraged by matching federal grants, meaning
that a $35 donation can help secure up to another $65 in
federal funds for wildlife conservation in Vermont. That’s a
fantastic deal for all of us who care about wildlife.”
“The Nongame Checkoff donations, along with hunting,
fishing and trapping license revenue, have helped recovery
efforts for Vermont’s peregrine falcons, loons, ospreys, bald
eagles, American martens, Indiana and northern long-eared
bats, spiny softshell turtles, and other species,” said Director
of Wildlife Mark Scott. “The common loon, osprey and peregrine
falcon are no longer endangered species in Vermont
due to science-based management that continues to benefit
those species.
Vermont Fish and Wildlife biologists manage nongame
wildlife projects that are diverse and include mammals, birds,
turtles, fish, frogs, bees, freshwater mussels, and plants, as
well as the habitats and natural communities they need.
“The Nongame Wildlife Fund has helped some of our
greatest wildlife success stories in Vermont,” said Scott.
“Thanks to the generous donations of thousands of Vermonters,
we are restoring many of the iconic species of the Green
Mountain State.”

April and will be recognized at the 2022 Vermont Arbor Day
conference and through VT UCF’s website and social media
platforms.

Broad Coalition of Support Gathers
to Discuss Environmental Justice
Community leaders and legislators gathered to discuss
environmental justice in Vermont, and the actions being taken
to remedy known inequities among impacted populations.
Vermont is one of few states that lacks an environmental justice
policy, and the passage of S.148, has become a priority for
environmental and social justice organizations across the
state.
Neighboring states, including Maine, are exploring similar
paths towards greater environmental equity. The Maine legislature
passed a law last month requiring the Governor’s Office
of Policy Innovation and the Future to define ‘environmental
justice’ and other related terms, and develop methods incorporating
equity into decision making in state agencies.
“Environmental justice is a lens, it’s a way to look at ensuring
no one is left behind … and a way of ensuring that
resources get to those who need them most,” said Sen. Kesha
Ram Hinsdale, D-Chittenden, kicking off the event and welcoming
the broad coalition of environmental justice and social
justice advocates. Sen. Ram Hinsdale is the lead sponsor of
S.148, and first introduced a similar environmental justice
framework as a senior at UVM in 2007.
Sen. Chris Bray, D-Addison, Chair of Senate Committee on
Natural Resources and Energy spoke next, acknowledging the
ways that Vermont could take more action to support the
populations most impacted by climate change. “While our
hearts in our programs are in the right place, the way in which
we do our work could be improved, made more inclusive,
more respectful, and to learn to move at the speed of trust.”
Sen. Bray is supportive of efforts to make the environmental
justice legislation a priority this session.
Rep. Kevin “Coach” Christie, D-Hartford, who co-chairs
the Social Equity Caucus with Sen. Ram Hinsdale and is leading
environmental justice efforts on the house side added,
“we’re going to be taking a very, very close look at how we
can prepare Vermont to be the leader we are always expected
to be.”
Following legislators expressing statements of support, a
broad coalition of speakers joined in to voice their focus on
S.148 and an environmental justice framework for Vermont.
Kiah Morris of Rights & Democracy and Vermont Renews,
emphasized that this work “requires dedicated funds, deep
and enduring financial investments, and infrastructures for
engagement so that reparations and healing are actually possible.”
A full list of speakers included:
• Senator Kesha Ram Hinsdale
• Senator Chris Bray
• Representative Kevin “Coach” Christie
• Judy Dow, Indigenous Scholar and Executive Director of
Gedakina
• Dr. Bindu Panikkar, UVM, REJOICE
• Kiah Morris, Rights & Democracy, VT Renews
• Mia Schultz, Rutland Area NAACP, Rights & Democracy
• Steffen Gillom, Windham Area NAACP
• Karen Horen, VLCT
• Hayley Jones, Community Action Works
• Jennifer Byrne, Vermont Law School Environmental Justice
Clinic, REJOICE
• Elena Mihaly, Conservation Law Foundation
• Sebbi Wu, Vermont Public Interest Research Group
• Sandrine Kibuey, VTTMHP/CVOEO
• Peter Sterling, Renewable Energy Vermont
• Johanna Miller, Vermont Natural Resources Council
Representatives from the Sierra Club and 350 Vermont,
alongside many of S.148’s cosponsors were also present to
share their support. As the speakers emphasized, implementing
an environmental justice framework will not stop at S.148,
but the bill provides a strong framework to build on.
