Gades baseball
gets first win

On a floodlit Gerry Collis Field underneath a moonless, starless Bakersfield
night sky, the Renegades secured their first victory of the
young season against Taft College last Friday, winning the game 6-3.
The Gades opened up the scoring in the 2nd inning when catcher
Miguel Castillo doubled to bring home third baseman Andrew Townson.
A BC error in the 4th allowed Taft College to tie the game, but
the Renegades would knock in three more runs in the 5th with a Jarrett
Branen RBI, a fielder’s choice that allowed centerfielder Jacob
Baker to score, and a bases loaded walk by designated hitter Xabi
Iparraguirre. Taft would score two more runs to make the game close
again in the top of the 6th, but later that same inning a Baker sac
fly and a Jose Ruiz double to bring home Brannen would restore the
Gades three-run lead, and the Gades pitching didn’t waver again as
reliever Dylan Pavletich allowed just three runners and no runs to
collect a 3-inning save. Pitcher Kyle Langston recorded the win and a
quality start, giving up three runs, one unearned, on four hits and four
walks while striking out four batters through six innings.
The next day, the Renegades got revenge on Moorpark College by
beating them 5-4, and so the next game for the Renegades will take
place on Feb. 3, as they begin the first of three straight games against
El Camino College at Gerry Collis Field.
NFL Divisonal Round Mayhem

The NFL playoffs
are reaching their
climax as we head into
the conference championship
round. Last
weekend’s divisional
round games saw last
quarter comebacks,
game-winning field
goals, overtime madness,
and everything in
between.
The Packers took on
the 49ers in Green Bay,
but the cold could not
help the Packers, as the
49ers took advantage
of Green Bay’s special
teams blunders to
tie it 10-10 late in the
4th. The 49ers then
marched downfield
to give kicker Robbie
Gould the chance to
win the game with a
45-yard field goal, and
Gould’s kick sailed
through the uprights to
give the 49ers a 13-10
victory as time expired.
The Cincinatti Bengals
faced the Tennessee
Titans in Nashville,
and while the Titans
got back their
MVP-caliber running
back Derrick Henry
prior to gametime, not
even King Henry could
stop the Cinderella-story
Bengals, as they beat
the Titans 19-16 with
a last second field goal
by Evan McPherson to
send Cincy to the AFC
Championship game.
In Tampa Bay, Tom
Brady and the Buccaneers
took on Matthew
Stafford and the Los
Angeles Rams. The
Rams took a big 20-3
lead at the half, and it
looked like all was bleak

for the Bucs. In the 2nd
half Tom Brady did
Tom Brady things, scoring
24 points in the second
half to put Tampa
back in the game. Tied
at 27, Stafford threw
the ball deep downfield
to wide receiver Cooper
Kupp for a connection
at the 12 yard line with
4 seconds left, leaving
just enough time for
kicker Matt Gay to kick
the game-winning field
goal to secure their trip
to the NFC Championship
game.
In the last divisional
game, the reigning
AFC champion Kansas
City Chiefs took on Josh
Allen and the Buffalo
Bills. In a chaotic final
two minutes, the game
went into overtime tied
at 36. The Chiefs won
the coin toss, and controversially
the Bills
never saw the ball as
quarterback Patrick
Mahomes ended the
game with a touchdown
pass to tight end Travis
Kelce.
The championship
round will see the
Chiefs meet the Bengals
in Kansas City, and the
Rams will see the 49ers
in Los Angeles with
trips to Super Bowl LVI
on the line.
